SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A taste of what is to come in the next week hit the Lake Tahoe Basin Saturday. The overnight system is moving out with the next one due Sunday afternoon.

Heavenly reports 2" of snow overnight, Sierra-at-Tahoe 3", Kirkwood 3", Mt. Rose 1" and Squaw Alpine 4".

Road Conditions as of 10:45 a.m. Saturday. US50 over Echo and I80 over Donner controls have been lifted at this time.

Quick-moving Christmas weather system passes with another on its heels

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A late Christmas Day weather system dropped several inches of snow around Lake Tahoe. A second colder system will be on its heels Sunday night into Monday and will provide chances for another round of snow. Additional fast moving storms are possible going into 2021.

Ski resorts are reporting the following 24-four snowfall reports at the beginning of operations Saturday:

Quick storm drops snow in Lake Tahoe Basin, Chain controls in place

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The snow is still falling this morning so totals are not yet available, but as ski resorts opened they were reporting 3"-4" with more coming. Temperatures were too high for snow at midnight, but they have since dropped allowing snow to start falling.

The Winter Storm Advisory expires at 10:00 a.m.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe area ski resorts are reporting 10"-17" of snow in the last 24 hours. Even though the snow has stopped, roads are still snow covered and plowing operations are under way.

Chain controls up around Lake Tahoe as new storm system moves in

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Winter Weather Advisory starts at 10:00 a.m. Sunday, but now has already begun to fall and road controls are up on roads around Lake Tahoe. The advisory is in place until 4:00 a.m. Monday, and before that time, total snow accumulation of 2 to 6 inches below 6500 feet and 8 to 16 inches above 6500 feet is expected.

Heavy wet snow blankets Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The overnight snow storm that hit the Sierra Tuesday night left over a foot of snow on the mountains around Lake Tahoe.

Ten inches of new snow fell overnight at Homewood Mountain Resort’s summit on Lake Tahoe’s west shore, and two inches at the base (lake level). With a winter storm warning in effect until 6:00 p.m. tonight, the National Weather Service forecast is calling for another 4-8” of snow throughout the day today, and 1-3” tonight.

First storm of the season drops snow around Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Law enforcement has been busy this morning with vehicles stuck in the snow around Lake Tahoe and on the surrounding mountain passes. Meyers is reporting 12" of snow, South Lake Tahoe 9.5", Genoa 7", Alpine Meadows 7" and the Gardnerville Ranchos up to 14".

This is a good day to stay off the roads. If driving, follow all controls, give yourself distance from the car in front of you, and take your time. The storm is moving out of the area but there will be some lingering snow until around 1:30 p.m.

Lane closure in South Lake Tahoe for pilot project as Caltrans paints bike lane green

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – Caltrans is advising motorists of a lane closure on U.S. Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe later this week for a pilot project to paint a section of the bike lane green.

The closure is scheduled for the eastbound #2 lane from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Thursday between Dunlap Drive and 3rd Street to apply the paint treatment.

As daylight saving time comes to an end on Sunday, November 1, any will notice the time change disrupting sleep patterns and affecting the ability to concentrate and safely operate a motor vehicle. To highlight the life-threatening dangers of fatigued driving, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) joins the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), and the National Sleep Foundation in recognizing Drowsy Driving Prevention Week, November 1-8, 2020, and encouraging Californians to stay alert and stay alive.

US50 over Echo Summit opens five days early

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - U.S. Highway 50 is back open to traffic over Echo Summit five days ahead of schedule, Caltrans announced today.

A full closure of Highway 50 over the summit was implemented Friday, Sept. 18 to install seven precast, prestressed 96-foot bridge girders and associated work that included pouring ultra high-performance concrete to connect the girders, building concrete barrier walls and approach slabs, applying a polyester overlay on the bridge, and asphalt paving approaching both sides of the new structure.

US50 over Echo Summit to reopen Sunday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Caltrans has announced the project over Echo Summit is ahead of schedule an plans are to reopen to traffic Sunday morning. This is five days ahead of the planned October 2 reopening after replacement of the 81-year-old bridge.

There could still be some delays with the timing, so plan accordingly and check ahead on http://quickmap.dot.ca.gov/.

The polyester overlay on the new bridge is complete. Asphalt grinding and paving on the approaches to the bridge will start Saturday.

Right turn restrictions during peak travel days in Meyers approved by committee, on to supervisors

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - As most in the South Lake Tahoe and Meyers area already know, getting out of town over US50 and Echo Summit on Sundays and holidays can be slow moving during summer, but during the winter it can be a miserable time both for visitors and locals.

Overnight closures of I-80 westbound lanes this week for paving project

Caltrans will continue overnight paving work along an approximate three-mile stretch of westbound Interstate 80 near Colfax starting Tuesday, May 26, requiring full overnight closures of the westbound lanes.

Final paving work is scheduled overnight Tuesday, May 26 through Thursday, May 28 from 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Martin Brothers Construction of Sacramento will be repaving westbound lanes of the interstate between Rollins Lake Road and the State Route 174 junction in Colfax; an area known as the Colfax Narrows.

Soroptimist of Tahoe Sierra's virtual Elegant Evening a success

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Many nonprofits have had to cancel their fundraisers due to the coronavirus, but the ladies of the Soroptimist International of Tahoe Sierra (SITS) club in South Lake Tahoe weren't going to let the virus stop them.

Their 31t annual Elegant Evening was slated to be held at Harrah's Tahoe on April 18 with a sit-down dinner, live music, and dancing, raffle, and auction. The venue closed and restrictions on meeting in groups of over 10 people were created, so what do you do with an event that brings together 500 community members?

Move it online, of course.

Winter Storm Warning until Monday for Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Winter Storm Warning is in place for the Lake Tahoe Basin until noon on Monday, April 6. At 10:00 a.m. Sunday, the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno said to expect heavy snow with additional snow accumulations of 8 to 16 inches, except 1 to 3 feet above 7000 feet. Winds could gust as high as 45 mph in the lower elevations and up to 90 mph over Sierra ridges.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is a Winter Weather Advisory in place until 10:00 a.m. Wednesday. Expect snow to fall in Lake Tahoe for another day as the latest in a series of small storms passes through.

For Wednesday: Snow likely before 11:00 a.m., then snow showers after 11:00 a.m. Some thunder is also possible. High near 35. Southwest wind 5 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 25 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. Total daytime snow accumulation of around an inch possible.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is still a chance of snow all week in Lake Tahoe, but the sun is now out, allowing people to catch up on shoveling out driveways, parking lots and roads.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The forecast snow is here, with 2-3 feet reported at the upper elevations. The snow is affecting lower elevations as well, with chain controls starting to the west at Apple Hill.

If on the roads, check conditions often and go slow as there is snow and ice on the roads and a lot of traffic. There is another 21" of snow forecast for Sunday at lake level.

Multiple accidents, heavy snow, reported on Lake Tahoe and Sierra roadways

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's been a busy day on the highways around Lake Tahoe today with several accidents and road closures.

As of 5:00 p.m. Saturday, law enforcement and rescue teams have responded to a reported head-on collision on Pioneer Trail, west of Golden Bear, a collision on Pioneer Trail and US 50 in Meyers, a collision on US 50 at Kyburz, a car off the roadway on SR89 near Emerald Bay and two collisions on US88 near Kirkwood. There are also numerous collisions on I80 and on the North Shore.

Snow blankets the Lake Tahoe Basin, finally

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It has been a while since Lake Tahoe has experienced measurable snowfall. The promised winter weather arrived overnight, with 8" of snow reported at the South Shore of Lake Tahoe by Sunday morning. Area ski resorts are reporting 4"-12" and Reno and the Carson Valley, due to some lake-effect snow, had 5"-7".

Even as the storm exits, expect wind as a new Lake Wind Advisory has been issued from noon on Sunday to 4:00 a.m. Monday.

Letter: No on Measure M because of VHR and GPS road issues

NO on Measure M. The Department of Transportation (DOT) has repeatedly told us they are willing to engage us with our GPS and to a lesser degree the VHR's. They told me to my face at the wed meeting that have contacted us and were working with us. Nothing could be further from the truth.

Tax measure on March ballot to fund snow removal equipment on South Shore

MEYERS, Calif. - The El Dorado County Department of Transportation (DOT) is asking voters in Meyers and the county areas of South Lake Tahoe for money to replace their aging snow removal fleet and equipment.

On March 3, voters will be deciding whether or not they want to pay $60 more a year via their property taxes to fund CSA3 (from Strawberry to Meeks Bay to South Lake Tahoe City Limits). Measure M, if passed, will supply an extra $540,000 annually for the sole purpose of buying and leasing snow removal equipment. The funds could not be used for salaries, pensions or any other purpose.

Eastbound I-80 closed after multiple big rigs crash near Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Eastbound Interstate 80 is currently closed after there were multiple collisions involving semi-trucks near Nyack, Calif. Given the number of trucks involved, it could be several hours until the road reopens to eastbound traffic. Alternate routes are advised for the time being though caution is urged on the major bypass, SR20 due to scheduled tree work and increase in traffic.

According to the CalTrans maintenance superintendent, a full closure of eastbound I-80 is expected for at least 4-6 hours. or between 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m.

Chain controls and spin-outs making for slow exit from Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Its been a standstill in Meyers Sunday morning as snow perhaps caught some people without chains on their vehicles by surprise. Caltrans was holding traffic on Highway 50 in Meyers as crews worked to get cars out of snowbanks on Echo Summit, but it has since started moving. They were pulling in multiple towtrucks from the area and advising them to tow all cars without chains. Some tow trucks were stuck in traffic on North Upper Truckee Road and on the highway. I80 near the SR89 exit is slow-moving at this time.

Lake Tahoe clearing out after quick snowstorm, clear holiday weekend ahead

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Storms for the winter of 2019/20 haven't been prolific, but this week's one-day storm left behind up to two feet of snow at Lake Tahoe ski resorts and about a foot around South Lake Tahoe.

Chain controls remain on mountain roads Friday morning but expect them to be dropping as the forecast calls for partly sunny skies and a high of 35. Saturday and Sunday will be partly to mostly sunny and in the mid-40s.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Yes, it is snowing in Lake Tahoe! The predicted winter storm has arrived as is forecast to drop 10"-16" of snow at lake level before midnight Thursday, and up to two feet of snow at upper elevations.

Chain controls are in place on all mountain roads around the Lake Tahoe Basin and in the Sierra. On US50, chains are required as low as Placerville and trucks over 65-feet in length are not allowed on the road. On I80, chains are required starting in Colfax. There are several jackknifed big rigs on the highway. Prior to heading on the roads, check conditions.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It was windy and snowy overnight around the Lake Tahoe Basin with gusts over the Sierra ridge peaking out at 137 mph overnight at Alpine Summit. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in place until 10:00 a.m. Tuesday with the Lake Wind Advisory up until 7:00 p.m.

Both Sierra-at-Tahoe and Heavenly Mountain Resort are reporting 1" of new snow this morning, so far. Kirkwood reports 3" of new snow.

Snow brings a mess to roads around South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The latest storm hit quickly Sunday morning, bringing snow to South Lake Tahoe area roads and, with those, chain controls, traffic issues and collisions.

Drivers heading west over Echo Summit have been attempting short cuts through Lake Tahoe Blvd., Mandan Street, Sawmill Road and North Upper Truckee, and because of that they are creating a mess with double parking as they put on chains and blocking the roadway.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A quick-moving storm made its was over the Sierra and Lake Tahoe Saturday night and Sunday morning, leaving behind a few inches of snow and the beautiful views the region is known for.

Recorded snowfall in South Lake Tahoe was 5" with 7" at Heavenly Mountain Resort and 7-10" over at Homewood. The forecast shows some days with sunshine and cold nights ahead until the next chance of snow on Wednesday and again next weekend.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Road controls are dropping on many of the Sierra's highways as the latest of storms passes through. Rain prevailed for much of the weekend, but not before ski resorts received a foot of new snow.

Heavenly Mountain Resort reports 12" of new snow, Sierra-at-Tahoe 14", Kirkwood 12" and Squaw Valley 16" in the last 24 hours. The West Slope experienced an afternoon and evening of heavy rain, thunder and lightning, and fog. Lake Tahoe is forecast to receive some of that freezing fog on Sunday night.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There has been a rockslide on US50 at Echo Summit, backing up traffic as crews work to clear the roadway. Rocks and dirt filled the westbound lanes since just after 1:00 p.m. Monday.

One-way controlled traffic will be in place until all debris is removed. It is unknown what time the work will be completed.

Rain in the Lake Tahoe Basin; Higher elevation snow and avalanche warning

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Winter Storm Warning remains in place for the Lake Tahoe Basin until 10:00 a.m. Monday. It is currently raining at lake level and at Echo Summit.

The Sierra Avalanche Center in Truckee has issued a Backcountry Avalanche Warning for the Sierra from Yuba Pass to Ebbetts Pass from Sunday morning until Monday morning at 7:00 a.m.

The latest storm system is still over the Sierra with more on the way. With high of 38 and low of 33, expect rain to continue in South Lake Tahoe.

There have been multiple vehicle spinouts on I80, forcing its closure tonight between Colfax and the Nevada state line. Highway 20 also is closed at Nevada City due to the spinouts. Motorists on I-80 should be prepared for long delays, according to Caltrans.

It is not snowing but ice is a concern.

Beautiful Thanksgiving day around Lake Tahoe, more snow expected

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Chain controls over many mountain roads are being lifted this morning as the beautiful blue skies Lake Tahoe is famous for are appearing from behind the clouds.

As of 11:00 a.m. on Thanksgiving, Caltrans has removed chain controls from US50 at Echo Summit but there is a small pocket from Fresh Pond to Sly Park that requires them at this time.

US50 reopens after 77 cows wrangled after escape from jackknifed big rig

10:15 p.m. update: US50 is now open in both directions. The last of the cows were wrangled and removed from the roadway.

77 cows were on the cattle truck when it jackknifed.

9:00 p.m. update: CHP reports US50 is still closed and they estimate it will reopen by 10:00 p.m.

It isn't the snow over Echo Summit that is hampering the Wednesday night drive on Highway 50 east of Placerville, its the cows and a jackknifed big rig near Apple Cafe and Carson Road.

A foot of snow blankets South Lake Tahoe; Heavenly opens and road controls in place

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is one word to describe Wednesday: SNOW! Winter made its appearance in the Lake Tahoe basin Tuesday and will continue this week as one storm exits and another stops by.

Lake Tahoe Community College is closed for the day. The college will reopen at its normal time after the Thanksgiving holiday weekend on Monday, Dec. 2. The City of South Lake Tahoe offices are open.

Chain controls go up as storm hits Lake Tahoe

5:00 p.m. Update: Expect a snowy night and slow-moving over roads in the Sierra. Chains controls on US50 are now up starting in Cedar Grove, west of Pollock Pines, at Pioneer on SR88, and above Gold Run on I80.

At this hour, traffic is at a standstill on I80 after multiple spinouts and crashes all the way to the California-Nevada state line.

CHP is also reporting some issues on US50 west of Echo Summit with two spots were cars are off the roadway, as well as SR88 near Christmas Valley.

No planned weekend traffic relief in Meyers this winter

MEYERS, Calif. - Residents attending the El Dorado County Town Hall meeting in Meyers on Thursday didn't hear what they wanted to about the upcoming winter and any plans that could be put in place to alleviate traffic jams in neighborhoods.

As is the case with all meetings concerning traffic in Meyers, there were several audience members with ideas from instituting maximum vehicles allowed in the Lake Tahoe Basin to turn restrictions and road closures during specific hours.

Downed power line on US50 in Kyburz closes lanes in both directions

9:00 p.m. update: Both lanes pf US50 have been cleared and are open to through traffic.

5:20 p.m. update: Westbound traffic is being allowed to move. Shortly, one-way controlled traffic will begin.

Traffic is backed up on US50 near Kyburz after a downed power line fell onto the roadway October 27. According to Caltrans, both eastbound and westbound traffic is stopped.

The incident started at 2:55 p.m. Sunday and as of 4:15 p.m., there is no estimated time of clearing.

Use SR 89 to SR 88 or I80 to head west from Lake Tahoe at this time.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Scheduled roadwork around the Lake Tahoe Basin is still in full swing before the winter hiatus.

For those wondering about the old Caltrans traffic camera at the Y: it is being replaced and when received there will be a lane closure coordinated for installation.

The camera at the new roundabout in Meyers can be rotated to analyze traffic needs and will not be aimed just at the roundabout for the time being.

Grinding and paving project in South Lake Tahoe to cause delays

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Caltrans grinding and paving project got underway Monday in South Lake Tahoe, causing traffic delays with travel reduced to one lane in each direction at the "Y" intersection.

Work got underway at 5:00 a.m. Monday at US50 and SR89. The roadway will be ground down and replaced with new asphalt.

For the duration of the paving work, the contractor is permitted to have around the clock lane reductions, weather permitting. The intersection operation is expected to be completed within a week.

Safety at Round Hill Pines Resort entrance focus of upcoming public meeting

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Safety for visitors entering and exiting the Round Hill Pines Resort from U50 is the focus of a second public meeting on a project currently in the Environmental Assessment stage. The purpose of the project is to increase safety and improve accessibility for motorists, pedestrians, and bicycles entering and exiting the popular resort. HIghway planner say the major issues in the area are limited sight distance, unprotected turning movements across US50 and vehicle queuing in the eastbound inside lane of US50 during peak visitation periods
