UC Davis bringing Science Fair to South Lake Tahoe; Volunteers needed

Event Date:
March 31, 2016 - 4:45pm

The UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Education Research Center (TERC) is expanding their successful Science Expo program to South Lake Tahoe through funding they were awarded last week by Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe.

Through a partnership with the Lake Tahoe Unified School District, TERC will host three days of the expo March 30 through April 1 at Lake Tahoe Community College.

During the day the expo will be presented to students in South Lake Tahoe and the community is invited to a public session March 31 from 4:45 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Both the NLT Science Expo and SLT Science Expo are happening soon and they need volunteers to help facilitate the exciting and fun activities at both locations. TERC provides training on all activities and no science experience is required. This exciting event would not be possible without the help of many volunteers (approx. 40 per session) so please check out the dates and times below and sign up for any or all shifts that fit in your schedule. It really is a lot of fun and you might even learn something new!

The Science Expo experience is designed to guide third-, fourth-, and fifth-grade students through hands-on scientific investigations and experiments. This year's theme is Physical Science with topics including: Energy, Forces and Motion, and Properties of Matter.

Training is provided and no science experience is required! If you would like the opportunity to preview the activities and familiarize yourself in advance we have official training times available. However, this is not required as you can be trained prior to your volunteer shift. Please feel free to sign up for more than one session as we need a number of volunteers. Being a volunteer is fun and easy, and snacks and refreshments are provided!

Official training days will be on March 9 at 6:30 p.m. at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences in Incline Village and March 29 at 6:30 p.m. at the Lake Tahoe Community College in South Lake Tahoe. They are also available to train you during the hour leading up to the start time each day or over the phone in advance of the event. Many of the activity stations require very little training and simply need a facilitator. You will receive activity descriptions with detailed background about the science presented. Volunteers will need to be ready to go at their station prior to the start time indicated.

The Science Expo could really use your help! It is important that our students have early experiences in science so that they develop curiosity and problem-solving skills. This will help them in an increasingly scientific and technological world.

If you have any problems signing up or any follow-up questions please contact volunteer coordinator Emily Frey at efrey@ucdavis.edu or (775) 881-7560, ext. 7474. Additional details can be found online at http://terc.ucdavis.edu/ed-outreach/ed-programs/science-expo.html.
