Patient Safety Awareness Week at Barton Health

“The patient is our focus and that’s why we put the patient at the top of the pyramid,” said Dr. Clint Purvance. Today [March 5], Dr. Purvance, Barton Health’s Chief Medical Officer, as well as Barton employees and community members gathered to recognize Patient Safety Awareness Week at Barton Memorial Hospital. Dr. Purvance highlighted Barton’s “excellence in performance and commitment to patient safety.”

“From 2010 to present, Barton has showed a 73% improvement in patient safety and has substantially decreased potential for patient harm,” Dr. Purvance explained. This improvement, from 2010 to present, was compared with 174 other California hospitals in ten clinical areas. For this significant improvement in patient safety, California Hospital Engagement Network (CALHEN) recognized Barton Memorial Hospital as a mentor hospital in patient safety. Dr. Purvance has received positive feedback from neighboring healthcare systems and shared his favorite complement: “Barton, you rock!”

Orchestrated annually by the National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF), this year’s Patient Safety Awareness Week runs from March 2 to 8. The goal is to increase awareness of Barton’s patient safety activities and develop lasting partnerships with the community, patients, and staff. Barton understands that patients have a choice where they receive their care and has made significant investments in patient safety, quality of care, and patient satisfaction.

Barton is sharing patient safety tips on social media and employees participated in a Patient Safety Poster Contest. The winner, announced at today’s celebration, was the Barton Family Birthing Center that addressed infant security. With an illustration of a baby crawling with a luggage security tag, the poster reads: “Get me tagged so I won’t get snagged.”
