South Lake Tahoe man who led NHP on chase tries to escape jail

A 24-year-old Tahoe man jailed Wednesday after leading Nevada Highway Patrol troopers on a vehicle pursuit from Highway 50 Spooner to downtown Carson City, faces charges of attempting to escape and destruction of jail property, a sheriff’s deputy said.

According to the arrest report, a deputy assigned to the jail on Thursday responded to the housing pod for an inmate, Jesus Salvador Herrera-Casas, attempting to climb through the ceiling. Deputies responded and saw the man climbing up into the ceiling through the ceiling tiles.

The suspect was able to get to a shelf where the TV sits on, and climbed up through the ceiling. When he was discovered his upper torso was already through the ceiling, the report states.

Other deputies responded to the housing pod and saw three ceiling tiles were on the floor and broken apart. The ceiling grid that holds the tiles to the ceiling was broken and separated from the wall, the arrest report states. The damage to the ceiling was estimated to be $135. He was booked at 10 a.m. on gross misdemeanor charges of attempted escape and destruction of jail property.

Herrera-Casas was originally arrested Wednesday on charges of eluding police, reckless driving, disregard traffic control device(s), speeding, and driving without a valid license. Go here for the original story about the vehicle pursuit.
