Lake Tahoe area road report for May 3 through May 10

Now that weather is favorable for roadwork, Caltrans and NDot have begun their projects around Lake Tahoe and the surrounding areas.

Long term projects:

State Route 89 (Placer County): Work continues on a $70.1 million project from Tahoma to the "Y" junction with State Route 28 in Tahoe City on Lake Tahoe's West Shore that will upgrade storm water drainage and treatment systems, add curb and gutter, resurface and realign the road, add new left-turn pockets and widen shoulders on a 9-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected in fall 2016.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County): Work has begun on a $25 million project from the "Y" junction with U.S. Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe to Cascade Road, north of Camp Richardson. Curb, gutter and sidewalks will be added in the 1.1-mile four-lane section, and the highway will be widened in the two-lane section to Visitor Center Road to provide 4-foot paved shoulders on each side. Drainage systems are also being built and the roadway will be resurfaced. Completion is expected by spring 2017.

This week:

State Route 89 (El Dorado/Placer County) from Pine Street in Tahoma to Trout Street: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control at various locations around the clock from 10 p.m. Sunday to noon Friday for drainage and pavement work.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County): Work continues on a $20 million water-quality project from 0.1 mile north of the Eagle Falls Sidehill Viaduct No. 5 in Emerald Bay to the Meeks Creek Bridge in Meeks Bay. This project is adding new drainage features, curb and gutter in some locations, and resurfacing a nearly 7-mile stretch of the highway. Completion is expected this fall.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County) from 3 Ring Road to 1 Ring Road: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday for drainage work.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County): Work has begun on an $8 million project from Meeks Creek to Wilson Avenue in Tahoma, installing curb and gutter and drainage systems to collect and treat stormwater. The highway will also be resurfaced. Completion is expected this fall. Motorists can expect one-way traffic control at various locations from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday for roadway excavation.

State Route 89 (El Dorado County) from just north of West Way to Fallen Leaf Lake Road: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control around the clock from 12:01 a.m. Monday to 10 a.m. Friday for drainage work. In addition, from the "Y" intersection with U.S. Highway 50 to 7th Street in South Lake Tahoe, motorists can expect lane reductions from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Friday for drainage work.

State Route 28 (Placer County): Work continues on Placer County's $50 million Kings Beach Commercial Core Improvement Project from State Route 267 to Chipmunk Street. The project is installing curb and gutter, sidewalks, roundabouts, lighting and drainage systems to enhance pedestrian and bicycle mobility, improve safety and provide water-quality improvements. State Route 28 (Placer County) from the junction with State Route 267 to Chipmunk Street: Eastbound and westbound motorists can expect the #1 lane closed from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday for curb, gutter and sidewalk work.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County): Work continues on a $57 million project by El Dorado County to construct a new overcrossing over U.S. Highway 50, new on- and off-ramps with signalized intersections, and new bicycle and pedestrian facilities at Silva Valley Parkway in El Dorado Hills. U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from Bass Lake Road to El Dorado Hills Boulevard/Latrobe Road: Eastbound and westbound motorists can expect a full highway closure from 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. Sunday for blasting operations. In addition, the Latrobe Road and Bass Lake Road on-ramps will be closed from 4:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. Sunday. A signed detour will be in place.

State Route 49 (El Dorado County): Work has begun on an $8.4 million project to repave an 11-mile section of State Route 49 from Cool to Coloma. Most of the cold-in-place recycling in which the existing pavement is ground up and reused and then asphalt overlay is placed over top of it. Rocks are also being added to some shoulder areas for erosion control. Completion is expected by August.

State Route 49 (El Dorado County) from Bridge Street/Mt. Murphy Road to just south of the State Route 193 junction in Cool: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control at various locations from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday for pavement work.

Short-term projects:

State Route 28 (Placer County) from Sierra Terrace Road to Rocky Ridge Road: Eastbound motorists can expect the auxiliary lane and shoulder closed from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday for utility work.

State Route 49 (El Dorado County) from China Hill Road to Koki Lane in El Dorado Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. Monday and Tuesday for grinding and paving work.

State Route 49 (El Dorado County) at Combellack Road: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday for utility work.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from Camp Sacramento to Sayles Canyon Road: Eastbound and westbound motorists can expect alternating lane closures around the clock from 12:01 a.m. Monday to 10 a.m. Friday for chip sealing.

State Route 89 (Placer County) from Eagle Point Campground to Sidehill Viaduct # 4 in Emerald Bay: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday for drain cleaning.

State Route 267 (Placer County) from Carnelian Bay Avenue to Martis Peak Road: Motorists can expect one-way traffic control from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday for maintenance work. 

Carson City area road work:

On Monday, May 4, and Tuesday, May 5, there will be a lane closure on Kansas Street just north of Colorado Street with flagger controlled traffic.
On Wednesday, May 6, there will be a lane closure on Ryan Way between Arrowhead Drive and Lockheed Way with flagger controlled traffic.

There will be utility work in the shoulder of the north side of Old Hot Springs Road between Goni Road and Research Way. No delays are expected.
In Dayton, the Nevada Department of Transportation continues work through May on a safety enhancement project near the Smith’s Shopping Center. The project will install raised turn islands in the median of U.S. 50 at three shopping center entrances: Retail Road, Pinecone Road and the main entrance to the Smith’s shopping center.

The raised medians will provide protected turn pockets for traffic to enter and exit. For enhanced safety, the left turn out of the middle shopping center entrance will be eliminated. River Road traffic will also be limited to right in and right out only. Left turns will continue to be available from Pinecone and Retail roads. In addition, roadway shoulders will be widened on both sides of U.S. 50 to allow for longer deceleration lanes, providing safer right hand turns.
Single lane closures will take place during construction, with minor travel delays possible. Construction is scheduled to complete before the end of May.
