Reno residents die in Mt. Rose crash

A crash on May 5 on the Mt. Rose Highway between a 2016 BMW X1 SUV and a 2017 Nissan Sentra sedan claimed the lives of an 78-year-old woman and an 83-year-old man, both of Reno, Nev.

At approximately 5:00 p.m., troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) responded to a serious injury crash involving the two vehicles on State Route 431 (Mount Rose Highway) at the intersection of Callahan Road in Reno.

Preliminary investigation shows that the BMW was traveling westbound on the Mt. Rose Highway, east of Callahan Road. The Sentra was traveling eastbound, west of Callahan Road.

The driver of the BMW failed to yield the right-of-way to the Nissan and initiated a left turn onto southbound Callahan Road. The front of the sedan struck the passenger side of the SUV in the eastbound travel lane.

A passenger in the BMW, 83-year-old Charles Houston succumbed to the injuries he sustained in the collision. The driver of the BMW and the four occupants of the sedan were transported to Renown Hospital in Reno.

Both occupants in the BMW were wearing seat belts, as were two of the four occupants in the Nissan. Both rear passengers in the Nissan were not restrained.

The driver of the BMW, 78-year-old Bjorg Houston, succumbed to the injuries she sustained in the crash and was pronounced deceased at 3:37 a.m. on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 by Renown medical staff.

Impairment is not suspected in this crash.
