CHP to focus on reducing teen distracted driving

Nearly six teen drivers are involved in a fatal car crash every day in the United
States. Inexperience combined with driver distraction increases the risk for error, making motor vehicle crashes the leading cause of death for young drivers in the nation. To reduce teen distracted driving, the California Highway Patrol (CHP) has partnered with Impact Teen Drivers (ITD) to teach positive habits and behaviors to our most vulnerable drivers through education and enforcement.

Following Tuesday's collision between a SUV and a woman on a Lime scooter where the driver left the scene, a pedestrian was hit on Wednesday night, and again the driver left the scene.

Local teen named National Youth Ambassador by Tobacco-Free Kids campaign

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Twenty-five California students have been named as National Youth and Young Adult Ambassadors by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids for demonstrating leadership in fighting tobacco use in their communities.

These young leaders were among 133 youth and young adults from 33 states who participated in the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids’ Digital Advocacy Symposium, a five-day online training session focused on building advocacy, communications and leadership skills.

Local teen facing brain surgery, fundraiser established

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Maddy Moody, a former South Lake Tahoe student and current Douglas High sophomore, will be at the UC San Francisco Benioff Children's Hospital at the end of the month for brain surgery.

South Lake Tahoe teen arrested after allegedly stealing truck

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An 18-year-old South Lake Tahoe man was arrested on Saturday, June 20 after allegedly stealing a truck from outside a home near the Y.

The 2008 Toyota Tacoma was parked overnight and when the owners woke up they say the truck was missing. According to their neighbor's security camera, the truck was taken at 3:30 a.m.

A 14-year-old girl missing from South Sacramento since early Sunday morning may be headed to the Lake Tahoe area. Nai-Lu Flores was last seen getting in an Uber vehicle at her grandmother's house at 2:00 a.m. Sunday, April 26.

Reports have placed Nai-Lu at the Denny's in Cameron Park, leading friends and family to spread their search to El Dorado County and Lake Tahoe.

Reports have been filed with the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office and Uber.

Local teen and Lake Tahoe Community College student Laney Terrell has been invited by the International Scholar Laureate Program to join a delegation on International Relations & Diplomacy that will be traveling to South Africa in spring 2020.

"I am so excited for this opportunity to see how other democracies work and represent my Hometown," Terrell said.

Space cleared to make way for new Lake Tahoe Boys & Girls Club building

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's looking a lot different at the Boys & Girls Club of Lake Tahoe facilities at the former Al Tahoe Elementary School on Lyons Avenue.

The current South Lake Tahoe site for BGCLT had major clearing this week to make way for a brand new clubhouse. Old portable buildings were removed as were some trees as crews make way for their multi-million dollar future home.

Violations of distracted driving laws continue to increase despite education

Even with the increase in anti-distracted driving campaigns, abusers of this law are on the rise according to data received during the California Highway Patrol (CHP) Distracted Driving Awareness Month in April.

During April, 19,850 citations were issued to drivers who violated California’s hands-free cell phone laws. This is a 3.6 percent increase from April 2018.

South Lake Tahoe teen headed to intensive law and trial program at Stanford

A 17-year-old high school senior from South Lake Tahoe is headed to Stanford University Law School this summer for an intensive 10-day long session where she will step from the classroom to the courtroom.

Laney Terrell currently attends Visions in Education Charter School and is due to graduate this summer, a full year ahead of schedule. She is also taking classes at Lake Tahoe Community College.

Snapchat joyride with AR-15 style weapon in South Lake Tahoe sends teen to jail

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 19-year-old man from Dayton, Nevada was arrested in South Lake Tahoe on Friday after he was allegedly found with an illegal and loaded weapon.

On April 5, 2019, at 2:19 p.m. the Douglas County Sheriff's Office called the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) with a "Be On The Lookout" for a black Mercedes with a passenger that was brandishing an AR-15 style weapon.

16th annual Drug Store Project in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - On Tuesday, April 2, 325 6th graders from South Tahoe Middle School, Zephyr Cove Elementary School and home-schooled youth, will spend the day at Lake Tahoe Community College going through the 16th annual Drug Store Project.

Since 2004, middle school students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) have gone through the Drug Store Project (DSP), a day-long comprehensive drug prevention program designed to educate youth about the dangers of substance use and abuse.

Tahoe Women's Community Fund announces awardees of $84,000 in grants

Douglas County Sheriff's Office asking for assistance in finding teen

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public's assistance in locating a 17-year-old who failed to make it home after school on Wednesday, February 13.

The whereabouts of Kyli Mastria are unknown.

Deputies do not know at this time if Kyli is missing or a runaway.

SnowGlobe gives back to the South Lake Tahoe community

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - SnowGlobe’s 2018 is over but their donations to the local community will continue for months, years and decades to come.

SnowGlobe donated fresh food, water, personal items and clothing to 11 local charities, including Live Violence Free, The Warm Room (Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless), South Lake Tahoe Family Resource Center, the Lake Tahoe Boys & Girls Club, Christmas Cheer, Tahoe Youth & Family Services, St. Theresa’s Church and their Bread & Broth program, Focus, Case de Fida, and the Reno/Sparks Gospel Mission.

South Lake Tahoe teen killed in San Luis Obispo crash

A South Tahoe High graduate has been identified as the victim in a single car crash on Highway 1 just after 3:00 p.m. Monday, December 3, 2018.

According to a press release from the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff-Coroner, the sole occupant of the vehicle was 18-year-old Zachary Andrew Harris of South Lake Tahoe.

Sheriff's deputies and officers from the California Highway Patrol responded to a single vehicle versus tree collision at Highway 1 and Stenner Creek Road, in-between Cuesta College and San Luis Obispo.

He was declared dead at the scene.

Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe signs land lease, first step for new clubhouse

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The community could see a new Boys and Girls Club in South Lake Tahoe as early as Spring 2021.

During their November 13 meeting, the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) Board voted unanimously to approve a ground lease between them and the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe (BGCLT), enabling the nonprofit youth club to build on a lot owned by the district adjacent to their current location at Al Tahoe Elementary.

'Make America Great Again" hat leads to altercation and arrest of El Dorado County teen

A Union Mine High School student was arrested Monday, August 27 after an altercation began on school grounds over a 'Make America Great Again' hat worn by another student.

The arrested student, a minor, began verbally berating the student wearing the hat. He then grabbed the hat off of the other student’s head and threw it to the ground. The teacher told the upset student to leave the classroom.

15-year-old completes 21.3-mile swim across Lake Tahoe

Angel More of San Carlos, California become the youngest person to ever achieve the California Triple Crown of Marathon Swimming after completing an overnight swim across Lake Tahoe.

She is also the youngest officially to have completed the feat according to the Marathon Swimmers Federation.

Bay Area teen to swim 21.3 miles across Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Angel More is missing the first two days of her junior year at Menlo High School, but there is a very good reason.

She'll be swimming 21.3 miles across Lake Tahoe.

The 15-year-old Bay Area resident is after the California Triple Crown of Marathon Swimming, and when she gets out of the water Saturday morning she'll be the youngest person to do so. Only ten people have completed the Triple Crown, the youngest of that group being a 38-year-old man.

Buchanan sentenced to 150 years in prison for murdering family, but could get parole

September 13, 2015 was the worst day in the lives of the Molly McAffe, and Adam and Gavin Buchanan families. They lost a son, grandson, sister, daughter, aunt, nephew, cousin, and their lives will be forever haunted by the heinous acts of another relative, Nolen Buchanan.

It was a very emotional afternoon in El Dorado County Superior Court Judge Suzanne Kingsbury's court Thursday during the sentencing of the now 18-year-old responsible for shooting his father, his father's fiancé and his 8-year-old brother and then setting their cabin on fire in Greenwood, Calif.

Nolen Buchanan found guilty on three counts of 1st degree murder

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An El Dorado County jury of five women and seven men deliberated about two hours Wednesday, coming back with a quick verdict in the case of Nolen Keith Buchanan, the Benicia, California teen that had been accused of killing his family and setting their cabin on fire to cover his tracks.

Nolen Buchanan murder trial in South Lake Tahoe nearing end

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - At 10:00 a.m. on September 13, 2015, Garden Valley Fire Department personnel responded to a wildland fire in the community of Greenwood in western El Dorado County, on Highway 193 between Cool and Georgetown. Upon arrival they found a residence still smoldering, but burned to the ground.

In the ashes were found the charred remains of Adam Buchanan, 38, his fiancée Molly McAffe, 37, and their 8-year-old son Gavin Buchanan. All three were shot before the cabin was burned down.

Coast Guard rescues teen paddle boarders on Lake Tahoe

The Coast Guard rescued two stand-up paddle boarders who were observed struggling on Lake Tahoe, Tuesday afternoon.

A good Samaritan called 911 at approximately 4:00 p.m., reporting two teenage boys adrift and struggling to paddle upwind near Rubicon Point on Lake Tahoe, which was relayed to Coast Guard Station Lake Tahoe watchstanders.

A Station Lake Tahoe 25-foot response boat crew was dispatched to the scene. The crew took the paddlers aboard and transported them to Lester Beach with no reported injuries.

Fundraising account set up for South Lake Tahoe teen who broke neck

On May 28, 2018, 18-year-old Rocky Beaty of South Lake Tahoe suffered a trampoline accident that broke his neck and was transported by medical helicopter to Renown Medical Center in Reno.

Rocky, a student at Lake Tahoe Community College, remains hospitalized in Renown after breaking his C-6 and C-7. A bank account has been set up to cover medical expenses at El Dorado Savings due to mounting costs and unknown future care expenses but they do know it will be extensive.

Douglas County man accused of armed robbery committed with teenage lookout

A Douglas County man is facing multiple charges after allegedly holding up the Carson County Market Friday night.

On June 1 at around 11:00 p.m., the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) responded to the store which is located on Mica Drive. The store clerk reported a male adult wearing a mask brandished a handgun and then fled on foot after an unknown amount of cash was handed over to the suspect.

Reno residents die in Mt. Rose crash

A crash on May 5 on the Mt. Rose Highway between a 2016 BMW X1 SUV and a 2017 Nissan Sentra sedan claimed the lives of an 78-year-old woman and an 83-year-old man, both of Reno, Nev.

At approximately 5:00 p.m., troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) responded to a serious injury crash involving the two vehicles on State Route 431 (Mount Rose Highway) at the intersection of Callahan Road in Reno.

Preliminary investigation shows that the BMW was traveling westbound on the Mt. Rose Highway, east of Callahan Road. The Sentra was traveling eastbound, west of Callahan Road.

South Lake Tahoe teen up for Youth of the Year

South Tahoe Now has carried two stories on the 14-year-old, one when she became the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe Youth of the Year, and the second when she was awarded the Hank Aaron Chasing the Dream Scholarship to attend Science Camp of America: Air and Space in Hawaii.

One Carson High teen dies from injuries in Kings Canyon crash

Family members confirmed via social media Sunday that 16-year-old Carson High School student Timothy Jones, one of seven students involved in a Nov. 9 crash on Kings Canyon, has died.

Timothy had been in a medically induced coma since the accident, in which two other high school students were critically injured. Timothy was an honor student and played baseball for Carson High School.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong said he was briefed Sunday by the Medical Examiner’s Office.

Teen accused of killing family moved out of juvenile system in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's been almost two years since Nolen Buchanan of Benicia, California first appeared in a Placerville courtroom as a 16-year-old, charged with the killing of his family in their El Dorado County vacation home and then setting it on fire.

The charred remains of Buchanan's father Adam, 38, his father's fiancée Molly McAffe, 37, and his 8-year-old brother, Gavin, were found in that Greenwood cabin on September 13, 2015.

Since that time, Nolen has been in the Juvenile Treatment Center (JTC) in South Lake Tahoe.

Teen reported missing in Lake Tahoe area found safe

2:00 p.m. update: From Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong: Juvenile Sean Ascuaga of Reno was located at Marlette Dam. He was found safe and unharmed, but will be checked by paramedics before transporting back to Carson City to family members.

Search teams from Carson City and Washoe County are looking for a missing 17-year-old male who has been reported missing and was last seen in the Chimney Beach area of Lake Tahoe on Monday afternoon.

Tracy man held on $1.5M bail after being arrested in South Lake Tahoe

A 27-year-old man from Tracy, California was arrested in South Lake Tahoe Sunday after a warrant had been issued for his arrest on a slew of charges stemming with his relationship with a 16-year-old girl.

Since his arrest, Omar Oceguera has been transferred from the El Dorado County Jail to the San Joaquin County Jail where his sits on a $1.515 million bail hold.

Nevada State Fair this weekend, El Dorado County Fair follows

Area residents and visitors can enjoy two big fairs with rides, music and exhibits. The 2017 Nevada State Fair runs from June 8 to June 11, and the El Dorado County Fair goes from June 15-18.

Teen who died near Vikingsholm identified

A 14-year-old from Detroit Lakes, Minnesota has been identified as the victim in Wednesday's fall at Emerald Bay in Lake Tahoe.

Chloe Conn fell approximately 50-feet while hiking near the Vikingsholm Trail at about noon on May 31.

No other details about the fall, or who Conn was with in Lake Tahoe have been released by the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO).

Teen dies after fall at Lake Tahoe

A 14-year-old female died on Wednesday, May 31 after she fell approximately 50 feet while hiking near the Vikingsholm trail at Emerald Bay.

Just after noon, On May 31, 2017, El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office received the call and responded along with CHP, Cal-Star, CA State Parks, Lake Valley Fire and South Tahoe EMS personnel. An off-duty law enforcement officer who was recreating in the area began CPR on the victim prior to the arrival of on-duty first responders.
