One arrested on multiple charges after head-on collision in Lake Tahoe

6/9/20 update: A 23-year-old man from Garden Valley, California has been arrested on multiple charges after being involved in a two-car Collison on US50 near Skyland at Lake Tahoe on June 8.

At approximately 6:05 p.m, troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) responded to a serious injury crash involving a Honda Civic and Toyota Tacoma.

The crash closed both the eastbound and westbound travel lanes of the highway for several hours as emergency crews aided the victims, transported the two drivers to the hospital via helicopter, and cleared the scene.

The preliminary NHP investigation shows a 2016 Honda Civic traveling westbound on US-50 at Douglas County mile marker 5 crossed over the double yellow lane lines. The Honda struck a 2017 Toyota Tacoma head-on.

The driver of the Toyota Tacoma sustained substantial injuries and his condition is unknown at this time.

The driver of the Honda, Matthew James Klausen, 23, was medically cleared at the hospital and arrested for: felony DUI causing substantial bodily harm, possession of a loaded firearm while intoxicated, concealed carry without a permit, driving on right half of road required, and possession of stolen property.

The roadway had one lane in each direction reopen at approximately 8:50 p.m.

7:35 p.m. Update: All lanes of US50 near Zephyr Cove will be opening shortly. The cause of the collision is still under investigation by the Nevada Highway Patrol. At this time it appears a Honda Civic and Toyota pickup truck collided on the highway near Skyland.

7:25 p.m. Update: According to Tahoe Douglas Fire, westbound lanes should be opening around 7:30 p.m.

7:00 p.m. Update: Due to the crash, expect the eastbound lanes to be closed for up to two more hours.

6:50 p.m. update: Two helicopters have now landed on the roadway to transport patients. Watch for emergency vehicles and personnel.

ZEPHYR COVE, Nev. - Lanes of US 50 near Zephyr Cove are currently closed as a helicopter ambulance lands on the road to transport a patient.

The Nevada Highway Patrol reports traffic is being held near Warrior Way.
