Road work pauses for the Memorial Day holiday

Roadwork stops in South Lake Tahoe at 6:00 a.m. Friday, so drivers have an easy go of it until 6:00 a.m. Wednesday as crews break for the Memorial Day holiday. Those working on the City of South Lake Tahoe roads go by the same rules as Caltrans, so both will stop for this period.

Starting Wednesday, Caltrans continues on the three-year Highway 50 project from the Y to Trout Creek. This year's work is from the Y to Tahoe Keys Boulevard. Another project is the completion of the bike trail from El Dorado Beach to Ski Run Blvd.

Those working on the City roads will be on Lake Tahoe Blvd from Y to Viking Way and Tata Lane next week.

When residential neighborhoods are being worked on they are still accessible. Crews will put up cones but vehicles are still permitted to pass through, though if another route is possible that might be best for smoother travel time.

In Sept 2016, the SLT City Council approved $1,602,947 for the 2016 Roadway Rehabilitation Project and hired Sierra Nevada Construction. Due to the late award of the contract and the diminishing temperatures experienced in September and October 2016, the project was postponed until Spring/Summer 2017.

In April of 2017, City Council approved an additional $300,000 to be added to the contract to include 200+ pothole repairs. Roads identified to be repaired in 2017 include;

Lake Tahoe Blvd #2 Lane from Glorene Avenue to Viking Way
Glenwood Avenue – Woodland to N. Rancho
Fairway/Glenwood Avenue – Johnson Blvd. to Cloverdale
South Avenue – 4th Street to Melba
Eloise Avenue – Cul de Sac to Dunlap
Primrose/Chonokis – Glenn Rd to Montreal Avenue
Tahoe Island Drive – 3rd Street to Peter Avenue
Aloha Drive – Venice Drive to Cul de Sac

Bike Trail Paving:
El Dorado Beach to Alta Mirra
Trout Creek Bridge to Edgewood Circle

Bike Trail Seal Coating:
Campground Trail - Rufus Allen Blvd to American Legion Tract
15th Street Trail to USFS Bridge

To see where SLT crews will be, the SLT Public Works Department will be posting information on their Facebook page as often as possible: https://www.facebook.com/CityofSLTPublicWorks/.

Since there are many more potholes and other road repairs needed, the City is exploring the possibility of a special election this fall for a ½ cent sales tax increase to support a road maintenance program.
