Head-on crash near Zephyr Cove sends three to hospital

A head on crash on Highway 50 near Zephyr Cove at Lake Tahoe Wednesday morning sent three to the hospital, one via Care Flight, the Nevada Highway Patrol reports.

NHP troopers continue to investigate why two vehicles collided on US Highway 50 near Zephyr Cove in Douglas County earlier today. The accident took place approximately a half-mile west of Zephyr Cove at around 6:50 am Wednesday morning.

According to NHP Trooper Chuck Allen, the preliminary crash investigation details indicate a green 1993 Cadillac 4-door sedan was traveling eastbound when the male adult driver allowed his vehicle to cross the double-yellow line where it struck the front portion of an approaching blue 2010 Subaru Forester that was driven by an adult female. The errant driver sustained serious injuries in the event and was airlifted to Renown Regional Center in Reno by Care Flight. The two young children riding in the sedan with him received only minor injuries and were transported by ground ambulance to Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe. The female driver was not injured.

The crash caused the temporary closure of the four-lane highway for nearly 90 minutes while troopers completed their on-scene portion of the investigation and waited for tow trucks to remove the involved vehicles. The roadway was completely opened shortly before 8:30 am.

Trooper Bob Wright is investigating this accident. Witnesses with any information about this event should contact him via the Department of Public Safety-Communications Center at (775) 687-0400 regarding case number NHP-130602410.

The names of those involved should be available and will be released tomorrow morning.
