South Lake Tahoe's 3rd Annual Fourth of July Parade Ready to Entertain

"I believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival," the 2nd President of the United States John Adams wrote to his wife, Abigail. "It ought to be celebrated by pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations from one end of this continent to the other..."

Adams wrote of the country's celebration of America's independence on July 4.

South Lake Tahoe will have many of those activities for everyone to enjoy, including a parade!

The Third Annual 4th of July Parade will be he held in South Lake Tahoe on July 4 beginning at 10 a.m. The parade will start at Les Schwab Tires at the Y and proceed along Highway 50 to the American Legion. Spectators are encouraged to line the parade route to watch, and many will be waving flags as the cars and floats go by.

The theme of the parade is to celebrate American Independence and honor veterans, who gave us our freedom. Branches of the Armed Forces will be represented, with active duty, reserves, and veterans, as well as families of fallen soldiers. The Grand Marshall this year will be John Filas, a ninety-three year old veteran and member of Post #795.

Also honored during the parade will be Jim Cunningham, the Law Enforcement Officer of the Year for Valor for his actions during the Asiana plane crash in San Francisco almost one year ago. He went into the burning plane in just his policeman's uniform to help save passengers.

Many local businesses will join the American Legion Post #795 as sponsors of the parade. California Colors and South Tahoe Refuse are also sponsors of the parade. A business may be a sponsor at $100 and $200 levels, whether they choose to be in the parade or not. Other entities may be in the parade for an entry fee of $50. Veterans are welcome, free of charge. All parade entries must register with Golden Bear Events by July 2, 2014.

The parade has become very popular, and is enjoyed by locals and tourists alike, waving flags and cheering along the route.

The parade is produced by Golden Bear Events and all proceeds will be given to the American Legion Post #795, to benefit veterans. The local Post helps veterans who come to them for help getting home, and those who need food, medicine, or other needs that are not met through other means. In recent months, the Post has seen a sharp decline in income due to circumstances beyond their control. They hope to make several hundred dollars from this event. The Post will be selling a barbecue meal at the Post after the parade.
