Douglas County man returns home to be DCSO deputy

Cole Sonneman, a Carson Valley native, was sworn in on July 18 as the newest deputy with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.

Sonnemann was raised in the Carson Valley and spent several years in the DCSO Explorer Program as a teenager with Deputies Teresa Duffy and Chris Griffith. Sonneman said he remembers attending DARE lessons taught by Griffith while attending Gardnerville Elementary School.

After graduation from Douglas High School, he attended the University of Nevada Reno (UNR) and enrolled in the ROTC program. He graduated from UNR with a Bachelor of Science degree in Human Development & Family Studies.

Sonneman was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the National Guard and is currently assigned to the California National Guard with an artillery unit in Lodi as a field artillery officer. He was a military police officer.

Several of the Sonnemann’s family members and many sheriffs’ office employees from the different divisions watched as he took his oath of office, and his new badge pinned on by his sister.

“It is truly an honor to return to my home town and work for our department,” Sonneman stated after meeting with Sheriff Pierini and receiving his badge.
