Wrong way driver hits woman and children in Carson City head on collision

A Dayton, Nevada man driving the wrong way on a stretch of Highway 50 near the V & T train track overpass in Carson City caused a major injury accident on Saturday night just before midnight.

Steven Stults, 52, was in his Mazda pick-up, traveling west in the eastbound lanes of the highway when he struck a Saturn driven by Victoria Dwyer, 25, also of Dayton. In the backseat of Dwyer's car were her two small children.

According to the Nevada Highway Patrol, information at the scene indicates that the Saturn attempted to steer to the right to avoid collision with the pickup, but the truck still hit the side of Dwyer's car.

Dwyer and Stults were transported by Care Flight to a Reno Hospital with serious, but non-life threatening, injuries. Both children were taken to a Reno hospital with minor injuries. They were both treated and released.

Impairment is suspected and is under investigation in this crash.

Both eastbound travel lanes were blocked for several hours during the course of the investigation and for roadway cleanup. One lane was able to be opened at approximately 1:30am and both lanes opened by 5:03am.

Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Granata is investigating this crash. Anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who may have information related to this incident is encouraged to reach out to him at (775) 688-2500 or agranata@dps.state.nv.us regarding case number NHP-160801321.
