Viking Corner: This Week at South Tahoe High

Welcome back to The Viking Corner. The South Tahoe High School 2019-2020 school year has officially begun. As freshmen enter a new chapter in their lives, fall sports begin, and seniors try to make their last year memorable.

Freshmen First Year

Incoming freshmen came to campus on Monday to organize their schedules, tour the campus, and see what’s in store for them for the next four years. Upperclassmen led the freshmen, making sure they were comfortable and answered their questions.

“The freshmen didn’t really need our help as they were eager to figure everything out on their own, but some of those freshmen came up to me during school to ask questions,” said Serena Palaroan, who led one of the groups.

Fall Season Sports

As classes kicked off, so did the fall season sports. The football team opened with a preseason win at home against Arcata High School. The game ended 49-28.

Wide receiver and kicker Gio Medina Morales said this season the team is aiming to make the playoffs.

The volleyball team has begun its season playing scrimmages against 4A teams at Douglas County Community and Senior Center and Reno High School. Their first home game is September 6 and 7 in the Blue Gym at STHS.

Abrielle Bross, outside hitter, and Madison Riley, opposite hitter, hope to finish the year strong with a trip to the state championship.

“I would like for us to do our best and just make memories because it’s our last season playing as a family,” said Riley.

Senior Year

Seniors have finally made it to their last year of high school. The class started the year with the annual Senior Scavenger Hunt the night before school started. Students stayed up all night to complete a variety of tasks. The night helped bring them all together before their final year.

“It was a great way to kick off senior year by spending time with my best friends and making really fun memories,” said Jerra McLaughlin.
