LTCC: Back in Session

With class schedules, books and other supplies in arm, 2,351 students headed back to school today as the Fall Quarter began at Lake Tahoe Community College. Though the numbers are comparable to last year, school officials have seen a shift to more full time students at the college. According to Tom Greene, VP of Academic Affairs and Student Affairs at LTCC, there are seeing more students who are working towards credits to transfer to a four year college.

"LTCC did a lot of work to reverse the negative impact that imposed repeatability mandates created," said Greene. The community college mandates stated that a course couldn't be repeated unless the content was completely different from the prior class(es). This was going to be an issue in South Lake Tahoe since many locals took the same physical education class several times. The mandates could have caused few enrollments but the opposite is true.

A new certificate program was added that involves working with South Tahoe High as well. The Commercial Music Program utilizes the state of the art equipment sound equipment at the high school as does the LTCC Digital Media Arts program. Later start times were created in order to encourage high school students to take these college level classes.

Due to high demand for several subjects the college added more classes that will start in October. Students can log onto the college website or visit with a counselor to see what their options are.
