Back to School for some in South Lake Tahoe on Monday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - School in South Lake Tahoe hasn't been held in-person since March due to the coronavirus pandemic. Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) will start the process of getting kids back into the classroom on Monday, October 12.

They will make the shift from Phase 1 to Phase 2 and a hybrid schedule with elementary students attending either Monday and Tuesday (Cohort A) or on Thursday and Friday (Cohort B), all days with a four-hour schedule. The rest of the time will be distance learning.

Barton labor & delivery nurse wins international DAISY Award®

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A nurse at Barton Memorial Hospital’s Family Birthing Center has received the international DAISY Award® for Extraordinary Nurses. Labor & Delivery nurse, Rayanne Marshall, RN, BSN, RNC-OB, won the award after being nominated by a patient for the dedication and compassion shown during delivery, making her feel comfortable and well-cared for, even when tensions were high.

Smoke from Loyalton Fire leads to postponement of Washoe County school start

WASHOE COUNTY, Nev. - Students in the Washoe County School District will not be going back to school as planned on Monday, August 17. COVID-19 didn't delay the start but heavy smoke and unhealthy air from the Loyalton Fire did.

The fire had consumed over 28,000 acres as of Sunday, prompting officials to delay the start at all schools in the district except for those in Lake Tahoe. Both Incline Elementary and High Schools had a scheduled start of school for August 31.

Back-to-school immunizations offered in El Dorado County

EL DORADO COUNTY, Calif. - When kids will be physically going back to school this fall is unknown, when they do immunizations will need to be up-to-date.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District creates survey for reopening guidance

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) has created a School Reopening Task Force (SRTF) to help create the guidance on reopening schools in South Lake Tahoe this fall.

SRTF launched a Return-To-School survey to collect information and gain a better understanding of how families are feeling about returning to school and what their expectations are as well as challenges. They will ask what worked well during the school closures, and identify areas for improvement

Sierra House not ready for all students; Al Tahoe to remain open

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Students and staff at Sierra House Elementary started their first day of school Monday, nine months after a fire caused significant damage to the building and moved students to other locations as work was completed to remove all damaged material and rebuild the inside.

Excitement about the return has been shortlived and shadowed by issues causing authorities to move many of the students back to Al Tahoe Elementary for classes until issues can be resolved on the campus.

Last minute touches being done as Sierra House Elementary prepares to open Monday

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Students at Sierra House Elementary School will be walking through the doors of their school for the first time this year, two weeks after the rest of those in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District.

When a fire damaged the school in November 2018, little did anyone know that it would take almost 10 months to reopen.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - With the start of the new school year rapidly approaching, students are not only getting their back to school shopping, but they are also wondering who their teachers will be, what buses to ride, and other important information.

South Tahoe Middle School is holding "Kickstart" on Thursday, August 22. It will be a day dedicated to giving out class schedules, taking school pictures, getting identification cards and tables full of information from the school and community for students and parents.

It's back to school for South Shore students

It's back to school from youth at the south end of Lake Tahoe on Monday, August 27. Both Lake Tahoe Unified School Distrist and Douglas County School District open their doors and welcome back students for the 2018/19 school year.

All school offices are open and available to help with registration and scheduling needs and to pick up schedules.

Tahoe Valley Elementary shows school is more than just academics

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE - The students at Tahoe Valley Elementary School are enjoying the fruits of many volunteers' labors as the new greenhouse, Tranquil Garden, climbing stumps and outdoor learning areas have been completed and officially dedicated.

Principal Christina Grubbs gathered staff, parents and community members prior to last week's Back to School Night to thank all who took part in the projects, and to show off what the kids now get to enjoy.

"This is a labor of love for all to enjoy," said Grubbs.

Sierra House starts at 9:10 a.m. and ends at 3:20 p.m.
Tahoe Valley K - 5 starts at 9:10 a.m. and ends at 3:20 p.m. TK runs from 9:10 a.m. to 1:15 p.m.
Lake Tahoe Environmental Magnet School starts at 9:15 a.m. and ends at 3:25 p.m.

The beginning of the school can be as hectic for parents as it is for kids due to the amount of paperwork to fill out and items to be purchased. Much of the class time on those first few days is filled with teachers collected those completed forms, sending kids to purchase gym clothes, school pictures, check out Chrome Books, and more. For the first time, both South Tahoe High and South Tahoe Middle Schools are holding "KickStart" day on Thursday, August 25 to alleviate some of those tasks. There will be a series of stations for students and parents to navigate through.

Tahoe Youth & Family Services and the Girls Project would like to say the warmest "Thank you" to the generous donors that contributed to the Girls Project to better help equip girls to meet their future with integrity, self-awareness and will allow this special and much needed program to continue and to grow.

The donations from these amazing community businesses and private donors will allow this program to buy supplies for crafts, snacks, educational field trips but most importantly, help these 150 girls to become future women leaders not only in Lake Tahoe but in our society.

The South Tahoe High Booster Club would like to thank the restaurants who donated fabulous food for our teacher's Welcome Back to School luncheon.

Over 70 people enjoyed food donated by Getaway Cafe, MacDuffs Pub, Riva Grill, My Thai Cuisine and Samurai for the spread they put on.

Make going back to school a breeze

Most kids and parents have a mixture of excitement and nervousness about starting a new school year. This is normal. However, parents can help ease the transition from summer vacation to the school routine. Here are some tips to prepare you and your student for the upcoming academic year.

STHS Asst. Principal Dennis Sarosik retiring after 34 years with LTUSD

Enjoying a nice, quiet and boring life is what Dennis Sarosik is looking forward to after wrapping up his 34 year career with the Lake Tahoe Unified School District next month. "I'm going to make every day a Saturday and a Sunday," Sarosik said.

When asked what he'd like to be remembered for, Sarosik quickly answered. "My signature experience was working with Yvonne Larson on bringing Sports Medicine to the school." He said that seeing the new department function as it is today is "beyond cool."

Lake Tahoe Unified students head back to school

It's once again time to hear the ring of the school bell, to see the yellow buses going through the neighborhoods, and hear the happy voices from the school playgrounds.

The summer vacation ends Monday for students in the Lake Tahoe Unified School District as walk, ride or drive to their first day of school.

Classes at South Tahoe High School start at 7:55 a.m. and school is out at 2:40 p.m. South Tahoe Middle School starts at 7:45 a.m. and ends at 1:55 p.m.

The four elementary schools have different start and end times:
Bijou, grades K-5 runs from 8:35 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.

Dollar Tree Opens Store in South Lake Tahoe

One of the country's favorite discount stores has opened a store on the south shore of Lake Tahoe. Dollar Tree held a grand opening on Saturday, July 5th at it's Round Hill Mall location.

"You'll be amazed at what you can find at Dollar Tree," manager Lance Hendee told SouthTahoeNow. "We carry almost everything under the sun."

Hendee said their grand opening was a little slow, but that they were expecting that due to the holiday and the fact that "most people don't know we're here."

LTCC: Back in Session

With class schedules, books and other supplies in arm, 2,351 students headed back to school today as the Fall Quarter began at Lake Tahoe Community College. Though the numbers are comparable to last year, school officials have seen a shift to more full time students at the college. According to Tom Greene, VP of Academic Affairs and Student Affairs at LTCC, there are seeing more students who are working towards credits to transfer to a four year college.

Memorial scholarship established for former LTCC student Lyra B. Fisher

Anna Lee works at changing students’ lives everyday as the TRiO-SSS program specialist at Lake Tahoe Community College. One of Lee’s students, Lyra B. Fisher, was tragically murdered this summer, the apparent victim of domestic violence. This month Lee decided to start a scholarship in Fisher’s name with the Lake Tahoe Community College Foundation.
