American Century Golf hands out over $50,000 to local nonprofits

It's been four months since the 27th annual celebrity golf tournament at Edgewood Tahoe, but area nonprofits continue to reap financial rewards from the tournament sponsor, American Century.

During the Lake Tahoe Visitor's Authority's November 10 meeting, grants totaling $51,984 were handed out, bringing the total given back to the local community to $113,984. Previously, the tournament provided $62,000 through on-site volunteer organizations and other efforts during the event to area high schools, Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe, South Tahoe High Booster Club, Tahoe Fund and the Gene Upshaw Scholarship.

The 20 grants, ranging from $500- $5,500, were distributed to Assistance League of Sierra Foothills, Barton Foundation, BATS Bringing Art to Schools, Big Brothers Big Sisters of El Dorado County, Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe, Christmas Cheer All Year, Kahle Community Center, Kelly Ridge, Kiwanis Community Organization Inc. (Coats for Kids), Lake Tahoe Educational Fund, Live Violence Free, Saint Joseph Community Land Trust, South Lake Tahoe Cancer League, Suicide Prevention Network, Tahoe Arts Project, Tahoe Magic, Tahoe Regional Young Professionals, Tahoe Senior Plaza, Tahoe Turning Point and Tahoe Youth & Family Services.

“The funding allows us to assist with a variety of efforts in our community affiliated with cancer, children as well as educational, civic, and recreational initiatives,” said Carol Chaplin, executive director of the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority. “The long-standing partnership with American Century and NBC Sports offers more ways to give back.”

Since 2009, donations exceeding $800,000 have been distributed to more than 80 local nonprofits to assist 10,500+ individuals in the South Shore community. Since its inception in 1990, the tournament has donated more than $4.5 million to both local and national nonprofits.

To be considered, local organizations had to meet 501(c)3 certified nonprofit guidelines, provide an outline of their mission, describe how the donation would be used and indicate impact in the community.

The 28th annual American Century Championship is July 11-16, 2017. For more information, visit: www.AmericanCenturyChampionship.com or www.TahoeSouth.com.
