No South Lake Tahoe Veterans Day ceremonies this year, but flags are up at Happy Homestead

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Due to restrictions on gathering due to the pandemic, Veterans Day ceremonies in South Lake Tahoe area canceled for 2020. The American Legion Auxiliary and Vets in Counseling members placed approximately 600 flags at Happy Homestead Monday, after the snow fell.

Veterans Day, which was once known as Armistice Day, is a federal holiday observed to honor veterans in the United States. Major hostilities of World War I were formally ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, when the Armistice with Germany went into effect. The name was changed to Veterans Day in 1954.

There are businesses and restaurants that offer specials for veterans and, in some cases, their families. Here is a list of some of those (if you are a Lake Tahoe area business that is offering discounts, please contact us and we will update this list):

California State Parks: Free admission to veterans, active duty and reserve personnel at 144 participating state parks.

Denny's: Free "Build Your Own Grand Slam" from 5 a.m. to noon Wednesday.

Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel: s a special thank you for your service in the military, please enjoy a lodging discount of $35/OFF per night when you use promotion code MIL.

Starbucks: Free tall hot brewed coffee for veterans, active service members and their spouses Wednesday.

Yosemite National Park – Free admission for all on Veterans Day. Reservations are required to enter the park.
