No Turkey Trot in South Lake Tahoe this year

There will be no Turkey Trot in South Lake Tahoe this year.

For over 30 years, runners both young and old have participated in the annual South Lake Tahoe Turkey Trot. They tapped into their inner turkey, donned holiday costumes and ran a lap or two and aimed for a prize. The race was normally a 5k one for the adults, and fun runs for the younger set.

Lauren Thomaselli, the City's Recreation Superintendent, tried to find a partner for the 2016 event but was unsuccessful.

In years past, the Turkey Trot was sponsored by the City with partners such as Tahoe Mountain Milers, Epic Tahoe, the Optimist Club and Lake Tahoe Community College.

Partners provided expertise in mapping out various courses, tracking times and age group winners, and managed both online and day of registration, according to Thomaselli. The city provided the venue, awards, decorations, and promotional support.

"We had a partner this year who stepped up in early November, and then decided there was not enough time to solicit sponsors and plan for a quality event," said Thomaselli.

When asked if the Turkey Trot will return in 2017, Thomasellii said, "Of course! It is a community tradition!"
