Reopening guidelines approved for Nevada casinos

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - Casinos in Nevada will not be opening during the Phase 1 reopening plan unveiled by Governor Steve Sisolak Thursday. All Nevada casinos will be required to create and implement an infectious disease prevention plan before they will be allowed to open once Sisolak gives them the green light. He said Thursday Phase 1 expires May 30 and the next phase can start then, or even earlier if all goes as planned. It is unknown at this time if casinos will be included in the next reopening phase.

Big crowd shows up to welcome Humane Society back to South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) has opened an office in South Lake Tahoe to better serve the community and they celebrated along with a full crowd at their grand opening reception on Tuesday.

HSTT came to the aid of the South Shore after the former director of the Lake Tahoe Humane Society embezzled almost $60,000. Its members tried to hold the 51-year-old agency together but it disbanded in January of this year, never being able to gain back the trust of the community.

Nevada celebrates 154th birthday with parade and full slate of activities

Nevada's celebration of statehood provides for a bevy of activities that showcase the Silver State's best. From contests to exhibits, food and beverages of all kinds, Native dancing, hot air balloons, concerts, a carnival celebration at Mills Park and the famed Nevada Day parade, there is something for everyone throughout the long weekend.

Captain Bryce Cranch has been promoted to the position of Battalion Chief, filling the vacancy left by retiring chief Rich Nalder.

New exhibition celebrates 1960 Winter Olympics at Squaw Valley

A new exhibit that celebrates the 1960 Olympic Winter Games at Squaw Valley is opening at the Fausel House Gallery in Placerville on Friday, January 12 and will be running through March 9.

The curated exhibit will feature art, memorabilia and promotional items from those Olympics, the only to be held in Lake Tahoe and the first to be televised.

Washoe County guides restaurants on offering healthier options

Washoe County restaurants are working with restaurants in promoting better menu choices.

We Order Well (W.O.W.!) is a new program for the County, and it provides restaurants with the materials they need to offer customers new healthier menu options when dining out. W.O.W! encourages smaller portion sizes for some already-popular menu items and also encourages healthier kids menus by adding extra fruits and veggies, removing sugar-sweetened beverages, and reducing fried foods.

Tools in place as new VHR rules go into effect in South Lake Tahoe

The City of South Lake Tahoe put the finishing touches to the new Vacation Home Rental (VHR) ordinance Tuesday, paving the way for what community members have asked for: More enforcement, better monitoring and rules to bring reasonable calm to their neighborhoods.

"This is a code with real teeth," said SLT Police Chief Brian Uhler. "It's a clear and simple message that we're not fooling around. There are strong laws for staff to carry out."

El Dorado County wins award for economic development

El Dorado County was selected as the "2017 Paving the Way" award by the Greater Sacramento Economic Council (GSEC) einner on December 6. This single award ecognizes a community that has achieved exceptional economic development results during the year.

“For the last 18 months, El Dorado County has developed and executed a strategic approach to economic development in order to elevate the profile of our part of the Greater Sacramento Region,” said Don Ashton, the County’s Chief Administrative Officer.

No Turkey Trot in South Lake Tahoe this year

There will be no Turkey Trot in South Lake Tahoe this year.

For over 30 years, runners both young and old have participated in the annual South Lake Tahoe Turkey Trot. They tapped into their inner turkey, donned holiday costumes and ran a lap or two and aimed for a prize. The race was normally a 5k one for the adults, and fun runs for the younger set.

Lauren Thomaselli, the City's Recreation Superintendent, tried to find a partner for the 2016 event but was unsuccessful.

4th Annual Tahoe South Restaurant Week Sept. 16-23

The Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority will continue supporting Tahoe South Restaurant Week in an effort to connect visitors and locals with the South Shore culinary scene, Sept. 16-23, 2016. In partnership with Tahoe Chamber and the newly formed Restaurant Industry Group, Restaurant Week will align efforts with Sample the Sierra, the popular farm-to-fork festival.

22nd Annual Boys and Girls Club Golf Tournament at Edgewood

Edgewood Tahoe is the home of the 22nd annual Boys & Girls Club Golf Tournament on Monday, October 12. The event raises over $40,000 each year to support the work of the club, which assists more than 600 local kids throughout the year.

This popular day of golf, food and fun normally sells out so early registration is recommended.

Lake Tahoe Home & Garden Show on Friday and Saturday

The fourth annual Lake Tahoe Home and Garden Show will be held on Friday, April 24th, and Saturday, April 25th, at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Complex at 1080 Rufus Allen Blvd. The show will be open to the public on Friday from 4:00 pm to 7:30 pm, and Saturday, from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm.

Monthly local's night at Lake Tahoe Hard Rock Hotel & Casino

As a thank you to area residents and employees, the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino Lake Tahoe is hosting a free industry night for locals on the last Sunday of every month featuring live concerts in Vinyl. The first monthly event is Sunday, April 26 with a performance by Forget the Roses. Doors open at 8 p.m. and the show starts at 9 p.m.

Carson Valley Storyteller Horserider video series released

For the past year, Terri Arnold of South Lake Tahoe has been creating promotional videos for the Carson Valley Story Teller series. Each of the nine completed videos (three are still in post production), show Arnold as she shows viewers all they can do in the area. She doesn't show you in the normal way either, everything is done while on a horse named Meha. They can all be seen on the Carson Valley Visitor Authority's You Tube page.

Tahoe Douglas Fire Honors Firefighters and Staff

The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District recently held a recognition and promotional ceremony at MontBleu Resort.

Fourteen firefighters were recognized with service awards, including 20 year veterans Battalion Chief Jim Antti and Captain Chuck Salerno.

“Fire Chief Ben Sharit challenged 20 new firefighters and staff members to continue the important work we do every day in our community,” says Eric Guevin, Fire Marshal spokesperson for the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District.

Wild is the new theme in advertising for Lake Tahoe license plates, as U.S. National Stand Up Paddleboard Team member Jay Wild of Truckee is featured in television and print ads shot last week at Carnelian Bay.

Avoid DUI Task Force Deploys Extra Patrols For Cinco de Mayo

The Avoid the 6 — El Dorado County DUI Task Force will be deploying DUI saturation patrols throughout into a number of cities supporting routine DUI patrols on Cinco De Mayo starting at 7 p.m. Saturday, May 5, 2012.  Additionally, CHP will be deploying saturation patrols onto freeways and in unincorporated county jurisdictions to stop, test and arrest impaired drivers who fail to use a designated driver.

City announces three new fire department shift commanders

The City of South Lake Tahoe is pleased to announce a promotional ceremony for three new Fire Department Shift Commanders will be held on Monday, November 21, 2011. The ceremony will take place at the City’s Administration Offices (South Lake Tahoe Airport) at 2:30 p.m. and is open to the public. Being promoted to Shift Commander are Jim Drennan, Rob Hembree and Dan Sullivan. In announcing the appointments, City Manager Tony O’Rourke said, “The three Commanders will have significant responsibilities and have demonstrated the capacity to carry them out. We are pleased to announce their promotions.”
