Chain controls go up as storm hits Lake Tahoe

5:00 p.m. Update: Expect a snowy night and slow-moving over roads in the Sierra. Chains controls on US50 are now up starting in Cedar Grove, west of Pollock Pines, at Pioneer on SR88, and above Gold Run on I80.

At this hour, traffic is at a standstill on I80 after multiple spinouts and crashes all the way to the California-Nevada state line.

CHP is also reporting some issues on US50 west of Echo Summit with two spots were cars are off the roadway, as well as SR88 near Christmas Valley.

Things on the Nevada side are not any better. There are now chain controls on Spooner Summit, Kingsbury Grade and the Mt. Rose Highway.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service (NWS)called for the first wave of the incoming storm to hit by 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, and it was right on time!

At this time there are several incidents on area roads including: SR89 near Emerald Bay - car versus a tree, vehicle off the roadway near DL Bliss and SR89, car off the roadway at SR88 near Red Lake Rd, spinouts on SR88 near Tragedy Springs, a vehicle into a ditch on SR28 near Dollar Hills, and an overturned vehicle near North Upper Truckee and Mewuk.

NWS-Reno has updated their forecast for Tuesday into Wednesday morning. Expect 3-5 inches of snow during the day today with 10-16 inches overnight at lake level. Southwest wind to 30 mph, with gusts as high as 50 mph. Some thunder is possible Tuesday night.
