Tahoe Youth and Family Services is hosting their Annual Evening of Giving on December 11 at the agency's offices at 1021 Fremont Avenue in South Lake Tahoe. Refreshments will be served at the event which is from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm.
The agency has a wish list oh in-kind donations for the holidays:

Halloween Fun in South Lake Tahoe Starts This Weekend

Halloween is always a celebration in South Lake Tahoe and this year is no different. Even though the actual holiday is on Thursday, October 31, the parties and celebrations start in town this weekend. Here is an overview on all that is happening:
Halloween Dance with the Tahoe Dance Band - at the Senior Center on Friday, October 25. The 17 piece dance band will perform big band music, food, drink, costume prizes. 7:30 - 10 pm. $10.
David Foster, Sculptor, Takes us to Italy at the SLT Library

December 10, 2013 - 6:00pm The Friends of the Library presents David Foster, international artist and sculptor specializing in traditional and contemporary fine art applications, who will share with us his life in the little Tuscan town of Pietrasanta, Italy as he follows in the footsteps of Michelangelo.
He will present a slideshow with images of the studios in which he works, the marble mountains his pieces come from, as well as the entire cultural experience of la vita italiana. This event is free and open to all.

Local Author to discuss books and self-publishing how-to

November 13, 2013 - 6:00pm The Friends of the Library presents John Hindmarsh, local author and self-publisher, who will share his latest books- Mark One [A thriller]and Shen Ark: Departure [a science fiction novel].
In addition to sharing his books and extremely interesting life story, Mr. Hindmarsh will also discuss the challenges and how-to’s of self-publishing. This event is free and open to all.

Footsteps of John C. Fremont Retraced

Enjoy a presentation by photographer Loren Irving on the footsteps of explorer John C. Fremont on October 24 at the Nevada State Museum from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. Irving has retraced the steps of Fremont who crossed the sierras from 1843-1844 and is known as the first white man to see Lake Tahoe.
Light refreshments will be served at 5 pm at the Dema Guinn Concourse prior to the program. Admission: $8 per adult.members and children under 17 are free. Location: 600 N. Carson Street, Carson City.

The themed holiday party supports TRYP’s professional development programs like workshops and scholarships, while also raising funds for the Boys & Girls Club of South Lake Tahoe. School and Community Safety at the Forefront

It was just 3 minutes from the time a gun was shot today in Sparks, Nevada until the first police officer arrived at Sparks Middle School. In that 3 minutes, one math teacher was killed, two students were shot and the young shooter shot and killed himself.
The Lake Tahoe Regional Plan and TRPA Win National Awards

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) was recognized by the American Planning Association (APA) this week at the annual Western Planner Conference in Stateline, NV, with three awards for outstanding planning, TRPA announced today.
League to Save Lake Tahoe Employee Wins Planning Award

The Nevada Chapter of the American Planning Association has recognized League to Save Lake Tahoe Policy Analyst Shannon Eckmeyer, Esq., with a Citizen Planner Award for her work on Tahoe’s regional plan update and area plans. The award was announced at the chapter’s conference at Lake Tahoe this week.
The award goes to individuals who are not professional planners but who have advanced or promoted the cause of planning in the public arena.
South Lake Tahoe Takes Part in National Lead Poisoning Awareness Week

October 20-26 is National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week and the City of South Lake Tahoe is joining agencies across the country to help bring awareness to the public about the harms of lead.
This year’s theme is "Lead-Free Kids for a Healthy Future” which emphasizes the many ways parents can reduce a child’s exposure to lead and prevent its serious health effects.

A Farewell to Local Firefighter Mitch Underhill

The South Lake Tahoe community said their goodbyes today to Lake Valley Firefighter Paramedic Mitch Underhill, both from the streets bordering his procession into town from Lake Valley to those inside the service at St. Theresa's Catholic Church. The 34 year old South Lake Tahoe native unexpectedly passed away on September 29.
Mitch joined the Fire District as a paid professional on September 27, 2005 and served the community with dedication and devotion for just over eight years until his untimely death.
Friends of the Library Looking for Book Donations For November 16 Sale

The South Lake Tahoe Friends of the Library are currently accepting donations of books and audio/visual materials for their upcoming book sale. They would greatly appreciate materials only in good condition and with a copyright date no earlier than 2000. Especially needed are recent children’s books and children’s DVDs, as well as recent materials in Spanish. The group would also like to limit audio/visual donations to DVDs & books on Tape/CD.

The South Lake Tahoe Library is hosting a Teen Writing Group during the month of November in honor of National Novel Writing Month.
There will be authors to meet and resources available to help young writers get inspired and get started during the free workshop.
The group will meet at the library on the first 4 Fridays in November: 11/1, 11/8, 11/15 and 11/22 at 3 pm. For additional information contact the library at 530-573-3185. The library is located at 1000 Rufus Allen Blvd.
South Lake Tahoe Police Department Receives Special Grant

A grant is headed to South Lake Tahoe to assist the police department in preventing death and injuries on the roadways. “We take traffic safety very seriously in South Lake Tahoe. With this grant funding we will be able to directly address the causes of injury collisions within our community” said Sergeant Shannon Laney.

A beautiful day to be out and about in South Lake Tahoe! We stopped by Meeks to check out their Kids Day and found our friends from Kiwanis with their free Kids ID booth, Jen from KTHO broadcasting live and Ethan and Eli Cox enjoying the crafts while dad James was grabbing their hot dogs.
We also stopped by the newly remodeled Starbucks at the Y and checked out the beautiful new place. So much more space now! Same friendly crew ready to serve.

The 11th Annual Treat Street will be held on Halloween night at South Lake Tahoe's Pine Cone Acre Motel. This year's event is sponsored by the Tahoe Area Coordinating Council for the Disabled (TACCD) and the Tahoe Sierra Kiwanis Aktion Club.
All trick or treaters are invited to this free evening of fun and games from 5 to 8 pm. There will be a haunted house, bounce house, mini golf, pie eating contest and other special events. There will also be free hot chocolate, candy and s'mores. There will also be hotdogs for sale for $1.

Harrison Avenue Project and Final Adoption of Plastic Bag Ban Ordinance on Tuesday's City Council Agenda

Creating street improvements in the Harrison Avenue area sits atop the list of the City of South Lake Tahoe's Capital Improvement Project priorities. Better stormwater treatment, a bike path, lighting, safer pedestrian walkways and ADA improvements are coming to Harrison Avenue in 2014 and the city will vote Tuesday to ratify agreements between TRPA, the state and the city to move the project forward. The project is funded through several federal and local transportation fund sources.
Most Lake Tahoe Community College Offices Will Be Closed Friday

Most offices at Lake Tahoe Community College will be closed on Friday, October 18 to allow employees to attend staff development training. However, the Child Development Center will remain open on this day. The college will resume normal operating hours starting Monday, Oct. 21. Out and About in South Lake Tahoe

We found lots of things to enjoy while out and about in South Lake Tahoe today!
The Pumpkin and Pony Festival at Forest Suites had several things for everyone to enjoy. There were local business booths, a pumpkin patch, pony and tractor rides, a climbing wall and bouncy house, live music and two food booths and historical entertainment. You can still catch this on Sunday from 10 am to 6 pm.
The South Tahoe Music Department had a rummage sale in the parking lot of the Emerald Bay Center for Women's Health to raise money for the music programs.
Bricks For Kids Fundraiser For Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe

The Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe has 800 members who visit the club over 43,000 times a year for a very low cost to the families. The need for a strong and vibrant club is very important to the community of South Lake Tahoe. Since many families are unable to pay for services, the Boys and Girls Club is holding a unique fundraiser to keep the club running.
Free Bike Racks Available to Local Businesses

The City of South Lake Tahoe has bike racks available for local businesses to use within the city limits. The Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition designed the racks and is encouraging businesses to apply to have the racks available to their customers and clients.
If interested, request an application from the coalition by emailing them at biketahoe@aol.com. Once approved, the city will deliver the free racks but it is up to the business to install them.

Free "Healthy Aging" Series Coming to South Lake Tahoe

The El Dorado County Health and Human Services Agency and Active Aging program are presenting a free educational series in South Lake Tahoe. The series will give instruction and support to persons aged 60 years and older and to their family members and friends. The classes will be held on Mondays from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. beginning October 21 through November 25, 2013 at the Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel (formerly Embassy Suites), located at 4130 South Lake Tahoe Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe. My daughter and I had been planning our annual Apple Hill trek for several days when I decided to change it up a bit. Since my free time is so rare I figured why not include a visit to our favorite little town Sutter Creek? And then, since we're doing that, might as well throw in a drive down beautiful Highway 4! Since the portion of the road we'll be covering is closed after the first big snow we had to do it! The day was plotted on a map in my head with some verification on google maps. The map said our little trip was going to take 5 hours and 10 minutes and cover 225 miles.
