Terri Arnold of South Lake Tahoe Wins Carson Valley Rider Contest

Humor and distinctive footwear shone through in a contest to find a spokeswoman for the Carson Valley. In September, the Carson Valley Visitors Authority announced its nationwide search for a “storyteller on horseback.” Fifteen women answered the call and in video submissions, which ranged from a poetic ode to the Carson Valley to a distinctive pair of pink stilettos, made their case to be the area’s spokeswoman.

El Dorado County Sheriff's Department Seeks Help in Finding Missing Girl

11/12/13 update: The El Dorado County Sheriffs Department is reporting that Juliet Riffey was found on Monday, 11/11 after receiving a 911 call. The caller had reported seeing Riffey in the Cameron Park area and have classified the situation as a voluntary runaway. No other details are available.

The El Dorado County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in locating an At-Risk Runaway Juvenile, Juliet Riffey.

Angela Swanson Announces Run for El Dorado County Board of Supervisors

South Lake Tahoe Councilwoman Angela Swanson has declared her candidacy for El Dorado County Supervisor District 5. "There is no better time to jump in," said Swanson of her announcement. "I am in the final year of my council term and will leave office having accomplished many of my goals and with an in-depth knowledge of the key issues affecting the district." Swanson cites economic redevelopment, smart growth and community investment as her top priorities along with building cohesiveness within the newly expanded district.

Sixteen Graduate From South Lake Tahoe Citizen's Academy

Another group of locals successfully completed the South Lake Tahoe Citizen's Academy. The graduates were presented with certificates at Tuesday's city council meeting. This November, the Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) Theatre Arts Department will explore that question in its production of “The Laramie Project: Ten Years Later,” by Moisés Kaufman, Stephen Belber, Leigh Fondakowski, and Greg Pierotti. The play seeks to understand a town that is forced to cope with the aftermath of a brutal hate crime, while also facing their own biases and fears under the media spotlight.

Peanutcracker Ballet Ideal for Kids this Holiday Season

The Sierra Nevada Ballet will present the popular “PEANUTCRACKER – The Story in Nut Shell” on December 6 and 7 in Carson City and December 17th in Reno, Nv. Based on Lev Ivanov‘s original ballet “The Nutcracker”, PEANUTCRACKER is a shorter, 45-minute narrated version that is “designed for families with younger children to introduce them to the wonderful world of ballet,” noted Rosine Bena, Artistic Director of the Sierra Nevada Ballet. Six New Bus Shelters Now Line Highway 50 Through South Lake Tahoe

You may have noticed the new bus shelters placed this summer along Highway 50 in South Lake Tahoe. They were installed by the Tahoe Transportation District, operator of the local South Shore Transit System. The shelters won't only come with seating and protect those waiting for buses from the elements, they also have new bike racks and bear safe trash cans.

Snowshoe Thompson Joins Others From the Past in a Historic Genoa Evening

Step back in time 150 years to Genoa of yester-year on Friday night, November 8 as Snowshoe Thompson, Sgt. William Coray and Stagecoach Driver Charley Parkhurst visit the Genoa Town Hall. Informational Meeting for Business Owners on Plastic Bag Ban in South Lake Tahoe

There was a ban imposed on single use plastic bags in the South Lake Tahoe city limits at the City Council's October 13th meeting. Nevada Celebrates 149th Birthday With Parade

Today was a state holiday in Nevada in honor of the state's admission into the Union on October 31, 1864. The annual gathering to celebrate the heritage of Nevadans has been marked with a carnival, contests, dinners, dances and other events. The big highlight of the birthday celebration will be the 75th Annual Nevada Day Parade in Carson City on Saturday, October 25.

Halloween Fun in South Lake Tahoe Starts This Weekend

Halloween is always a celebration in South Lake Tahoe and this year is no different. Even though the actual holiday is on Thursday, October 31, the parties and celebrations start in town this weekend. Here is an overview on all that is happening:

Footsteps of John C. Fremont Retraced

Enjoy a presentation by photographer Loren Irving on the footsteps of explorer John C. Fremont on October 24 at the Nevada State Museum from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. Irving has retraced the steps of Fremont who crossed the sierras from 1843-1844 and is known as the first white man to see Lake Tahoe.

It was just 3 minutes from the time a gun was shot today in Sparks, Nevada until the first police officer arrived at Sparks Middle School. In that 3 minutes, one math teacher was killed, two students were shot and the young shooter shot and killed himself.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) was recognized by the American Planning Association (APA) this week at the annual Western Planner Conference in Stateline, NV, with three awards for outstanding planning, TRPA announced today.

League to Save Lake Tahoe Employee Wins Planning Award

The Nevada Chapter of the American Planning Association has recognized League to Save Lake Tahoe Policy Analyst Shannon Eckmeyer, Esq., with a Citizen Planner Award for her work on Tahoe’s regional plan update and area plans. The award was announced at the chapter’s conference at Lake Tahoe this week.

The award goes to individuals who are not professional planners but who have advanced or promoted the cause of planning in the public arena.

South Lake Tahoe Takes Part in National Lead Poisoning Awareness Week

October 20-26 is National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week and the City of South Lake Tahoe is joining agencies across the country to help bring awareness to the public about the harms of lead.

This year’s theme is "Lead-Free Kids for a Healthy Future” which emphasizes the many ways parents can reduce a child’s exposure to lead and prevent its serious health effects.

A Farewell to Local Firefighter Mitch Underhill

The South Lake Tahoe community said their goodbyes today to Lake Valley Firefighter Paramedic Mitch Underhill, both from the streets bordering his procession into town from Lake Valley to those inside the service at St. Theresa's Catholic Church. The 34 year old South Lake Tahoe native unexpectedly passed away on September 29.

Mitch joined the Fire District as a paid professional on September 27, 2005 and served the community with dedication and devotion for just over eight years until his untimely death.

Friends of the Library Looking for Book Donations For November 16 Sale

The South Lake Tahoe Friends of the Library are currently accepting donations of books and audio/visual materials for their upcoming book sale. They would greatly appreciate materials only in good condition and with a copyright date no earlier than 2000. Especially needed are recent children’s books and children’s DVDs, as well as recent materials in Spanish. The group would also like to limit audio/visual donations to DVDs & books on Tape/CD.

Teen Writers Can Learn How to Write a Novel in November

South Lake Tahoe Police Department Receives Special Grant

A grant is headed to South Lake Tahoe to assist the police department in preventing death and injuries on the roadways. “We take traffic safety very seriously in South Lake Tahoe. With this grant funding we will be able to directly address the causes of injury collisions within our community” said Sergeant Shannon Laney.
