South Lake Tahoe's only wildlife rescue and rehab center, Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care, opens their doors to the public just once a year, and Sunday, August 2 is that day.

Visit their facility and see the wildlife currently under their care through closed circuit monitors. LTWC volunteers will be on hand to guide visitors through the wildlife rehab center, explaining what is in each cage and the story behind each animal. The open house will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

LTWC brand clothing will be on sale, as well as renderings of the new facility which will open in the Spring of 2017.

Tom and Cheryl Millham have been operating Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC) out of their home since 1978. Since then, they've treated over 22,000 animals, released over 14,000 rehabilitated animals back into the wild, have a volunteer crew of 2,000 people, and train 50 to 100 new volunteers annually.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from the junction with State Route 89 to 2nd Street in South Lake Tahoe: Eastbound motorists can expect alternating lane closures from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. Monday through Friday for gas line relocation work. Eastbound motorists can also expect the right shoulder closed at the same location from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. for trenching.

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from the junction with State Route 89 to 2nd Street in South Lake Tahoe: Eastbound motorists can expect alternating lane closures from 5 p.m. to 11 a.m. Monday through Friday for gas line relocation work.

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Governing Board on Wednesday unanimously approved the Tahoe Transportation District’s State Route 89/Fanny Bridge Community Revitalization Project to realign State Route 89 through Tahoe City.

The project realigns State Route 89 to route through traffic over roundabouts and a new two-lane bridge across the Truckee River to reduce transportation conflicts among drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians at the congested pinch point at the Tahoe City “Wye.”

Now that weather is favorable for roadwork, Caltrans and NDot have begun their projects around Lake Tahoe and the surrounding areas.

City Councilwoman JoAnn Conner and just one member of the public showed up at the South Lake Tahoe council chambers on Wednesday as Caltrans unveiled their $57 million U.S. Highway 50 Improvement Project. This three year project will have major impacts on businesses and travel from the "Y" to Trout Creek Bridge starting in 2017 so Caltrans officials at the presentation expected more involvement from the community.

South Lake Tahoe resident Lisa Maloff presented a $10 million check to the Barton Foundation on Wednesday night for the building of the Robert Maloff Center of Excellence. The donation was made in memory of her husband Robert, who co-owned and operated the Lake Tahoe Inn and Timber Cove Lodge.

While the summertime tourist to South Lake Tahoe should only be slightly affected, business owners along Highway 89 are worried about their livelihood with overnight road construction and blocked driveways.

During Thursday evening's Caltrans informational meeting at South Tahoe High, several owners of lodging properties, restaurants, sports and retail stores spoke about their concerns during the project which will last from mid-April to mid-October in 2015 and could even extend into the 2017 building season.

Just a few months after she donated $5 million to Lake Tahoe Community College, Lisa Maloff has made another large donation in honor of her late husband, Robert Maloff.

Barton Memorial Hospital is the latest recipient of Maloff's generosity. She made a $10 million gift to fund the building of a health and sports performance center on the Barton Memorial Hospital campus. The new center will be called the Robert Maloff Center of Excellence.

As the incoming Chair of the 15-member Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Governing Board, this promises to be a hopeful and exciting year. 2015 will be full of opportunities, but also challenges, for the continued protection of Lake Tahoe.

The number one priority among our challenges is funding shortfalls. Federal and state funding that has paid for environmental restoration and protection efforts at Lake Tahoe for years is drying up and new approaches need to be pursued.

Two Douglas County businesses took home top awards on November 6 during Northern Nevada Development Authority’s (NNDA) Pioneer Awards. The Pioneer Awards recognized businesses in 5 county regions and each county chose a business of the year. Douglas County’s Business of the Year Award went to Bently Enterprises.

Bently was selected based on alignment with the County’s five guiding economic vitality principles:
· Improves business climate and enhances education and workforce
· Is unique and marketable
· Helps maintain the exceptional quality of life

Dr. Simon Hook from the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) will be in Lake Tahoe on November 13 to discuss his work at the lake and around the Earth using satellite measurements of the surface temperature.

The City of South Lake Tahoe made several strategic moves in 2010, allowing them to survive the financial crisis which caused so many problems in 2010. As the Five Year Financial Forecast is presented during Tuesday's City Council Meeting, it will be evident that it is time again to make more strategic moves to stay in the black and be sustainable. One such move should be a focus on growing the local economy.
