Santa Cruz-based artist Andrea Borsuk will create a new site-specific mural installation portraying the journey from the California coast to the Nevada desert. By layering paintings, drawings, and objects on top of a wall mural to imply a narrative trajectory, Borsuk explores the precarious notion of time and destiny.

Lake Tahoe Community College hosts award-winning poets

The Lake Tahoe Community College Writers’ Series proudly presents an evening of poetry with Robert Krut and Patricia Smith on Friday, Oct. 11 at 7 p.m. in the LTCC Library. The poets will read, engage the audience in a Q & A and sign books. This free event is open to the community and books will be available for purchase.

Robert Krut’s “This Is the Ocean” is the recipient of the 2012 Melissa Lanitis Gregory Poetry Prize, offered annually by local publisher Bona Fide Books in honor of the Lake Tahoe artist who died in 2009.

A little over 22 years ago the small community of South Lake Tahoe was rocked with a tragedy that touched the hearts of most residents.

With a sense of disbelief, schools announced that Rory Hrbacek, Sandy Haynes, and Casey Wells had died in an accident on Pioneer Trail that also affected two other home-town boys, the driver and his front seat passenger.

It was difficult to find a person in our town who did not know either the boys or their parents. It was the greatest single instance of grief this town could remember.

Come and see the winning pictures selected in the Carson Memories photo contest at the Carson Nugget

The winners of the Carson Memories photo contest were announced this week in a ceremony held at the Carson Nugget.
The Carson Memories contest asked participants to submit their favorite photos demonstrating something special or distinct about the Carson City area.

The winning photos, along with the other select photos, are being incorporated into an exhibit created by Gardnerville artist, Beverly Caputo. The exhibit is featured next to a recently finished mural painted by Caputo. The mural depicts key people, places and things of historical relevance to Carson City.

Police sketches past time of South Shore Lake Tahoe firefighter

In a world of aerial drones, stun guns and surveillance cameras, an electric eraser doesn’t seem like much of a crime-fighting tool.

For Leona Allen, a spokeswoman for Lake Valley Fire Protection District and certified composite sketch artist, the handheld device is a cherished part of a crime-fighting kit that includes pencils, a blending stump and a sketch pad.

Mural Project spotlights talents of local artist and seeks to engage community

The white walls on the second floor, outside the banquet rooms of the Carson Nugget, are in the process of being transformed. Right now they contain the mural paintings of Kit Carson, V&T Railroad, Dat So La Lee, the Carson Mint, Carson Nugget, Roosevelt’s Speech Capital Building, Carson Brewery and Capital Building; but soon those walls could contain so much more.

“The hope is to show Carson City’s uniqueness as well as the love and pride we have for our home and community,” said Gardnerville artist Beverly Caputo.

South Lake Tahoe police are looking for a man who attacked and attempted to rape a 25-year-old woman on New Year's Eve after she accepted a ride from the suspect.

The man is described as white, about 25 years old, 5 foot, seven inches tall and about 150 pounds with a thin build. His hair was wavy brown, about 2 inches on the top and about 1-inch on the sides and had about a week’s worth of facial stubble.

The suspect was driving a pickup, described as an older model white Ford with a manual transmission and black cloth seats.

Well known South Lake Tahoe artist Peter Darvas injured in Pioneer Trail fire

Well-known South Shore Lake Tahoe artist Peter Darvas was being treated at Barton Memorial Hospital on Tuesday evening after he tried putting out a house fire on Pioneer Trail.

Authorities said the fire, reported shortly before 6 p.m., was at the corner of Edna and Pioneer Trail. Darvas’ home, according to city records, is at 3128 Pioneer Trail – at that corner.

According to a message from City Manager Nancy Kerry to Councilman Tom Davis, Darvas was in the house and tried to put the fire out. He was being treated at Barton Memorial Hospital.
