Sample the Sierra Weekend of Festivities at South Lake Tahoe set for holiday weekend

Spend Labor Day Weekend in South Lake Tahoe sampling the best food, wine, and art in the Sierra Nevada Region. The 3rd annual Sample the Sierra farm-to-fork festival will take place on Sunday, Sept. 2 on Ski Run Boulevard.
This year, 15 local restaurants and farmers will be paired together to produce mouthwatering samples for festival-goers to enjoy. Each food sample will be paired with an accompanying wine, also local to the region.

Sierra Nevada Ballet Presents 'Giselle' featuring Dance, Music and More

The Sierra Nevada Ballet takes the stage this summer to present "Giselle," which is possibly the best-loved of all the world's ballets. This profound folk tale comes to life through music, drama and over 30 professional dancers who will share this story of doomed love ... complete with jealousy, madness and vengeful ghosts. According to the ballet’s artistic director Rosine Bena, “Giselle is steeped in the tradition of ballet and conveys the poetry that makes this great production a must see this summer.”

A series of classical music concerts featuring a 38 piece symphony orchestra of world-renowned artists highlights Lake Tahoe SummerFest in August. Weekend performances include Friday and Saturday night symphonies and Sunday programming for families.

Environmental art exhibit 'Visualizing Change' at Lake Tahoe through July

The Lake Tahoe Science Consortium collaborated with University of Nevada, Reno’s Department of Art to create “Visualizing Change,” a photographic art expedition intended to convey concepts in environmental restoration at Lake Tahoe to the scientific community and general public. The exhibit is located in the Prim Desert Research Library at Sierra Nevada College at Lake Tahoe’s Incline Village. It features photography and oil painting contributions from eight noted artists and is free and open to the public through July 27.

Pablo Cruise headlines A Concert Under the Stars Wednesday

Dave Jenkins returns to Carson City for his second performance at A Concert Under the Stars, a fundraiser for The Greenhouse Project, July 11 with his band, Pablo Cruise.
Jenkins performed four years ago for the inaugural event, which takes place at Café at Adele’s, but his love of music began at a tender age.

Writers Returns to Squaw Valley with a Great Line-Up of Literary Events

Every summer writers of all stripes — poets, novelists, screenwriters and writers of memoirs, histories, essays and short stories — descend on Squaw Valley and Lake Tahoe for a week of intensive literary activity. The valley buzzes with metaphors flying and manuscripts flapping, as over 250 writers, editors and publishers convene in two separate week-long workshops in poetry, fiction, nonfiction, memoir and screenwriting.

The Village at Squaw Valley Hosts the 11th Annual Art, Wine & Music Festival

This July, Squaw Valley welcomes the return of the Art, Wine and Music Festival with exquisite artwork, fine wine and internationally acclaimed classical and world guitar music. Now in its second year of partnership with the Sierra Nevada Classical Guitar Society, the event is truly a delight for the senses. The festival will take place Saturday, July 14 and Sunday, July 15 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in The Village at Squaw Valley.

UNR scientists explore climate change in the Sierra using art

Scientists from the University of Nevada, Reno helped renowned environmental artists Helen Mayer Harrison and Newton Harrison create an exhibition on display at the Nevada Museum of Art in downtown Reno that predicts the potential effects of climate change on the Sierra Nevada mountains.

“The exhibition by the Harrisons helps people see how climate change may alter natural areas that many of us enjoy,” Thomas Albright, professor of geography in the University’s College of Science, said.
