Opening night for Tahoe Valley production of The Jungle Book

This isn't your mother's school play. Tahoe Valley Elementary Performing Arts is presenting The Jungle Book to local schools, parents and the community this week, and the production shouldn't be missed.

Under the direction of Jack Suglian, a Tahoe Valley Elementary and South Tahoe High graduate and stage veteran, the 55 students have been in rehearsal since January, not only working on lines but also on 15 musical numbers.

The play is inside the schools "Thunderbird Theater."

Fundamental Freedoms art exhibit opening at LTCC

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Lake Tahoe Community College Art Department instructor Shelley Zentner brings her large-scale portraits inspired by stories of freedom and expression to the Fine Arts building’s Foyer Gallery in her exhibit, “Fundamental Freedoms.” Zentner will host an artist reception and talk on Thursday, April 19 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. inside the Foyer Gallery. Mayor of South Lake Tahoe Wendy David will officially open the exhibit at 6:30 p.m., followed by an artist’s talk from Zentner. Wine and canapés will be served, and all are welcome to attend.

Tahoe South Shore Arts Town meeting to form community's art vision

What does a community "rich in art" look like? The Tahoe Arts Alliance is partnering with Nevada Arts Council to hold a Public Arts Town Meeting and to share and get public input on Tuesday, March 13 at the Tahoe Mountain Lab from 5:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Residents, businesses and non-profits are being brought together to assess the current "state of the arts" on the South Shore.

Public invited to unveiling of new art at City's gallery

The City of South Lake Tahoe will hold their third City Art Gallery opening on March 5 at City Hall starting at 6:00 p.m. The public is invited.

The Tahoe Arts Alliance has selected Nick Akins as the featured artist. His art will be on display from March 5-June 15, 2018. Akins has been painting for 20 years in a style that he describes as graffiti art. Due to a scheduling conflict, Akins will not be in attendance of the art gallery opening.

Emanate Art Gallery opens at The Crossing in South Lake Tahoe

Entrepreneurs continue to be a part of the renaissance in South Lake Tahoe, bringing new businesses and experiences throughout the town.

Three long-time locals have become part of that vibe and opened Emanate Gallery in The Crossing at Tahoe Valley at the Y and will be celebrating with a grand opening weekend February 24-25 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Benjamin Sullivan, a 2010 South Tahoe High graduate, joined Angela and Ron Cabrera in opening the new gallery, complete with its own full service custom frame shop and unique delivery services.

Tahoe Art League to feature local Burning Man artists

The Tahoe Art League will be presenting two South Lake Tahoe artists and one local art car owner and their Burning Man art at their next business meeting to be held on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

There will be a short meeting prior to the presentation. The artists will present photos and stories of their Burning Man art projects and will be available for questions.

The free presentation will be held in the Lake Tahoe Community College Board Room/Aspen Room.

Almost one year ago almost five million women, men and children gathered around the world to participate in the Women's March on Washington on the same day President Trump was being inaugurated.

They gathered to stand together in their protest of reproductive rights, equal pay, safety for women in the workplace and more. They stood against racism, sexism, sexual assault and harassment. They stood against Trump and his policies that were racist, anti-LGBT and anti-women.

Escobar Training Grounds to raise funds for injured South Lake Tahoe man

MMA legend Gilbert Melendez will be joined by friends on January 13 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Escobar for Coco’s Comeback, a one-day seminar which will be both a welcoming and enriching experience for athletes of all skill levels and a fundraiser for Chris "Coco" Cocores, a champion MMA fighter.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - Fans of electronic music have flocked to South Lake Tahoe for the annual SnowGlobe outdoor music festival held December 29-31 at, one the Community Fields. The predominately under-30 crowd come from colleges and communities hundreds and even thousands of miles away to enjoy a specially gathered group of top artists in the electronic dance music (EDM) field.

Along with the fun though comes issues common at most music festivals: noise, trash, underage drinking and drugs.

Jury Duty and fine scams continue to prey on senior citizens and other area locals

Douglas County residents continue to receive scam phone calls about missed court dates and jury duties, resulting in two residents being scammed out of over $5,,000 each, according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office (DCSO).

LTCC lecture to feature South Lake Tahoe artist

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Local artist Malcolm Tibbetts will be giving a lecture to members of the public as part of the Lake Tahoe Community College Art Club's Visiting Artist Series on Friday, November 3 at 5:30 p.m. in the school's room F101.

Tibbetts primarily works with wood and has been featured during the Tahoe Art League's annual Studio Tour. He has donated several large sculptures to LTCC that can be found around campus.

South Tahoe High student photography on display at City Hall

Award winning photography by South Tahoe High School (STHS) students is now on display at the Lake Tahoe Airport's art gallery.

Some of the photographers were on hand a reception hosted by the City of South Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Arts Alliance on Monday, the second since the gallery was opened in June of this year. Work of local artists will hang on the walls at the entrance of City Hall at the airport throughout the year and will be rotated quarterly.

LTCC students heading to renown ceramics conference

Students in the Art Club at Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) are gearing up for their annual participation in the California Conference for the Advancement of Ceramic Art (CCACA) conference in Davis from April 28-30. LTCC students are designing and installing a personalized exhibition that will be on display throughout the conference, joining 40 other regional schools with exhibitions installed at locations all around downtown Davis.

Modern Makers: Unique arts and crafts store opens in South Lake Tahoe

Another reason to "Stay and Play in South Lake Tahoe" just opened their doors in the Ski Run Center: Modern Makers.

This interactive arts and crafts store opened for business March 22 and offers a large variety of craft kits and supplies, with more being added weekly. Modern Makers' specialty is a craft area set up where projects can be done right in the store, whether its for a birthday party, a family project or as a solo artist. They have an extensive menu of crafts customers can work on, whether it's in the store, a motel room or at home.

NDOT begins installing new "Welcome to Nevada” signs

The Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) has begun installation of new “Welcome to Nevada” signs designed by Nevada art students.

The first welcome sign was installed Wednesday, March 15 at the Nevada-California border on State Route 88 south of Minden. Signs will be installed at approximately 25 other border locations statewide over the coming months.

Instead of the welcome signs, select border crossings such as State Route 28 in Crystal Bay and U.S. 395 near Bordertown will receive gateway monuments in the future.

Lenny Kravitz latest act added to Lake Tahoe Outdoor Concert Series

South Lake Tahoe, Calif. - There are now eight nights of summer concerts scheduled for the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena. Lenny Kravitz is the latest to book and will head to the South Shore July 14 for an 8:00 p.m. show at the arena at Harveys. Pre-sale tickets go on sale March 22, general public sales March 24.

Kravitz will be one of two artists booked to perform on the outside stage during the annual American Century Celebrity Golf Tournament in South Lake Tahoe July 11-16, 2017. Third Eye Blind plays after the final round.

The list of artists booked for the Lake Tahoe Outdoor Concert Series at Harveys has expanded with the booking of Sammy Hagar and Slightly Stoopid, bringing the number of concert dates to six.

Hagar & The Circle featuring Michael Anthony, Jason Bonham and Vic Johnson start off the July holiday weekend with their July 2 concert in the arena. Tickets go on sale March 10.

Slightly Stoopid - Sounds Of Summer 2017 tour with Special Guests Iration, J Boog, The Movement makes a stop at he outdoor venue on Friday, August 4 starting at 5:00 p.m. General admission tickets are $37.50 each.

Project takes STHS grad on journey through family's experience with mental illness

There are many different mediums artists use for their work: clay, paint, pencil, metal and stone just to name a few. For an art project at U.C. Santa Cruz, South Tahoe High grad Daniel Kagan used something many wouldn't have thought of, his brother's mental health records.

Some of $500k in Nevada Commision on Tourism grants headed to South Shore

Grant funds in the amount of $504,230 were awarded to agencies and groups across rural Nevada to be used to develop, promote and improve tourism to and within the State of Nevada, and some is headed to the South Shore.

The Lake Tahoe Visitor's Authority (LTVA) was one of 27 in the Reno-Tahoe Territory to get a portion of $132,295 awarded to the area.

LTVA is getting $6,000 for digital advertising and social media for the AMGEN Women's Cycling Race and a $15,000 grant to promote events through the purchase of

California State Parks coloring contest open to youth 4-18

Budding young artists are encouraged to participate in the California State Parks' 2nd annual Youth Art Contest, "Discover State Parks." The submitted artwork should share what the artist personally discovered in one of the state parks.

Any flat medium is acceptable, including chalk, crayon, marker, ink, paint, watercolor or collage. There are no entry fees associated with this contest.

South Lake Tahoe art gallery has international and local impact

El Dorado Community Foundation awards over $260,000 in grants

Major impacts to communities in El Dorado County were made possible through $264,905 in grants for 2016/2017 from the El Dorado Community Foundation.

Funding for the came from community members who invested in the foundation through Donor Assisted Funds. Those donating to the fund were able to engage in a new process this year by reading the grant proposals (55 were received) and the year-end reports of the non-profits applying for them.

Tahoe for Standing Rock holding benefit concert

Lake Tahoe area supporters of those protesting the pipeline in Standing Rock, ND will be holding a benefit concert at the Tahoe Biltmore on the North Shore on Saturday, December 3 starting at 1:00 p.m.

The family friendly event will feature musicians along with members of local Native American tribes. Also on tap is a arts and crafts area with face painting, raffle and silent auction. Tickets are $20 for adults (12 and under are free) and available by clicking HERE.

8th annual Festival of Trees & Lights gets underway December 1
