50th annual Tahoe Douglas St. Patrick's Day celebration

Liberty Utilities to award 9 scholarships to high school and college students

Liberty Utilities is offering $4,750 in academic scholarships to eligible high school and college students within its service territory.

The eight schools participating in the sixth annual scholarship program are South Tahoe High School, Loyalton High School, Douglas High School (students residing in Alpine County only), Coleville High School, North Tahoe High School, Truckee High School and Portola High School, as well as Lake Tahoe Community College.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue holds annual awards ceremony

An overflowing crowd of family, friends and community members filled the City Council chambers Monday as South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue held their 5th annual awards ceremony.

The staff was honored for their service doing a job that protects the lives, homes and environment of the South Lake Tahoe community and its visitors.

"Your recognition is well deserved, and well earned," said Mayor Wendy David.

South Tahoe and Whittel High School students honored by Soroptimists

In a tradition dating back decades, the Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe recognized local high school students for not only their academic and athletic achievements, but for their work in the community.

92 local charities benefit from Vail Resort's Epic Promise grants

Ninety-two different nonprofits recently received cash or product donations from Vail Resorts through their EpicPromise grant program. The beneficiaries all serve communities around Northstar, Kirkwood Mountain and Heavenly Mountain resorts.

Carson City dog headed to Westminster Dog Show

Carson City’s Deputy Director of Emergency Management, Stacey Belt, has a couple of very special Spinoni Italiano dogs. One of them, as Stacey puts it — a bearded Italian girl with bushy eyebrows named Adele, will be competing in the famous Westminster dog show in February.

We spoke with Stacey to learn more about these fascinating dogs as well as the world of competitive dog shows and the time both pooches got lost in the woods for an entire week in 2016.

Sierra-at-Tahoe is holding "Jammin 4 Tash" on Saturday, January 20 to honor the late Natasha "Tash" Sagucka who died from Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia on November 4, 2017 at the age of 24.

"From the time she was two years old till her last days on this earth she found peace, love and light on the mountains," was stated on Sagucka's obituary. "She thrived from the energy of slashing through the trees and sliding on the rails just perfectly."

Charlie Puth coming to Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena

Multi-Platinum artist/musician/producer Charlie Puth has announced plans for his biggest North American headline tour to date, The Voicenotes Tour, and they include a stop at the scenic Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena at Harveys on Saturday, August 18, 2018.

Multi-Platinum recording artist Hailee Steinfeld will be joining Puth on the tour.

You can catch Puth on Tuesday night's finale of The Voice on NBC and Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve.

Spotlight on You: Angela Zajic and Rah Hair Studio

A South Lake Tahoe hair salon is gaining attention from around the country because of their specialized wedding hair services, and its all because of Rah Hair Salon's owner Angelia Zajic and her team of eight stylists.

Zajic, a South Lake Tahoe native and a graduate of Whittell High School, opened Rah in 2009 after working at New Wave and in the Aveda Salon at MontBleu. It was her experience with Aveda that led Angela to creating a spa-like atmosphere at the studio which is located at 2572 Lake Tahoe Blvd #4.

Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel wins guest relations award

Lake Tahoe Resort Hotel won top honors at the California Hotel & Lodging Association “Stars of the Industry” awards for their "My Tahoe" guest relations program.

The annual awards recognize lodging employees and properties that best symbolize the quality service of the industry.

The “My Tahoe” program was born back in 2013 when the property went independent as a Premier Hotel Collection member, and hotel leadership had the opportunity to reimagine guest experience.

Vail Resorts celebrates local community with Epic Promise awards

EpicPromise grants and donations were given away on Wednesday to dozens of non-profits who serve the communities around both Heavenly Mountain Resort and Kirkwood.

Grants and donations are given by Vail Resorts in all of the communities where they have operations and go to programs who serve youth or environmental initiatives.

Weidinger PR wins multiple honors at annual awards event

Lake Tahoe-based Weidinger Public Relations was recognized with three awards for 2017 campaigns at the Public Relations Society of America, Sierra Nevada Chapter Silver Spikes Awards, Nov. 16 at The Grove in Reno, Nev.

Weidinger PR received honors for three entries: one Silver Spike and two Awards of Excellence. The firm’s public relations efforts for the 2017 American Century Championship captured the Silver Spike for “Special Events and Observances.”

The Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce (Tahoe Chamber) is holding their annual Blue Ribbon Awards dinner on Thursday, November 9 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., at the Harrah's Lake Tahoe Ballroom. Lake Tahoe Marathon events around the lake; Some road closures

The kickoff events are now in the record books, and racers are now preparing for the rest of Lake Tahoe Marathon week to get started. Please note, State Route 89 will be closed to vehicle traffic in each direction around Emerald Bay from approximately 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 15 during the Lake Tahoe Marathon. Motorists should be aware of runners along the highway from Homewood to South Lake Tahoe.

USFS celebrates Best in Basin awards for Camp Richardson and Stinger projects

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU), along with partners Camp Richardson Resort and the Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association (TAMBA), were recognized by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) with two “Best in Basin” awards for the Camp Richardson Resort and Campground BMP retrofit and the Kingsbury Stinger Trail Project.

Tahoe-Truckee Electric Vehicle Plan named best in Nevada

At its annual conference Wednesday, the Nevada Chapter of the American Planning Association recognized the Tahoe-Truckee Plug-In Electric Vehicle Readiness Plan with awards for most outstanding plan and most outstanding public outreach. The awards were presented as part of the group’s annual DeBoer Awards program.

LTCC opens three new art exhibits, meet the artists at community reception

Nominations open for Lake Tahoe Bicycle Achievement Awards

Now is the time to toot their horn as the Lake Tahoe Bicycle Achievement Awards nomination period has opened. Each year the Lake Tahoe Bike Coalition honors those who have helped the bicycling community around the lake have a safer, better ride.

$10,000 awarded to Child Advocates of El Dorado County

Child Advocates of El Dorado County were awarded a $10,000 donation from Cumbre Insurance Services, LLC in celebration of the agency being honored for demonstrating extraordinary volunteerism to make positive change happen in their community.

This 2017 Safeco Insurance® Make More Happen Award allowed the local company to assist with the non-profit’s mission of providing an advocate for every abused, neglected and at-risk child within the county.

Museum in Carson City to host community birthday bash for Glenn Lucky

Former South Lake Tahoe resident Glenn Lucky turn 65 this month, and the Nevada State Museum in Carson City is planning a big birthday party in his honor on September 27 at 10:00 a.m. in the Dema Guinn Concourse of the museum at 600 N. Carson Street.

Lucky was born on Sept. 27, 1952 in Coronado, Calif. He was diagnosed with cerebral palsy when he was just one.

He and his family moved to the South Shore when Glenn was 3-year-old.

Kokanee Trail Runs in South Lake Tahoe this October

Tahoe Mountain Milers are holding their annual Kokanee Trail Runs during the Fall Fish Fest on October 8. Participants can choose to participate in the 5K, 10K 1/2 Marathon or the Tadpole Trot at the Sno-Park on Highway 89 north of Camp Richarson.

Race day registration begins at 6:00 a.m. or those wanting to join in can sign up
on October 7 at Oktoberfest at Camp Richardson. Online registration is at

The long-distance run will start at 7:00 a.m., the Tadpole Trot at 8:00 a.m.

South Tahoe High football team holds inaugural golf tournament

South Tahoe Football is holding their first fundraising golf tournament on Saturday, September 30 at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course. This even coincides with South Tahoe High's Homecoming weekend events.

Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9:00 a.m.

Following the tournament will be a luncheon and awards presentation.

The cost is $100 per golfer. Opportunities to host a hole ($100) or sponsor the tournament ($1000) are also available.

TEDx South Lake Tahoe speaker lineup announced

After a popular, and sold out, inaugural event in 2016, TEDx South Lake Tahoe is coming back and promises to be bigger and better.

The TEDx license only allowed 100 attendees at The Loft during its first year, but after a trip the New York and a TEDx main event, local organizers were able to qualify South Lake Tahoe for a larger audience in 2017.

Boys Scouts host 4th annual Car and Truck Show in Carson City

In their 77th year of providing scouting opportunities to boys in the Carson City and Carson Valley area, Boy Scout Troop 33 is hosting their 4th annual Send A Scout to Camp Car and Truck Show on Saturday, August 12 at Fuji Park in Carson City from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Participants can either pre-register or sign up the day of the event. Cost is $40. Each participant will get a T-shirt, one lunch meal ticket, and a dash plaque.

Barton Auxiliary awards $76,500 to students and Birthing Center

South Lake Tahoe, Calif. – Thirteen students were recently awarded $19,000 in scholarships by the Barton Auxiliary which also gave $$57,500 to the Barton Family Birthing Center for additional services and equipment.

The awards came during a recognition lunch on June 12.

Barton Auxiliary is a group of volunteers who support Barton Hospital, its patients, and the community through. In 2016, Auxiliary volunteers raised funds from The Attic and gift shop sales, holiday fundraisers, and personal donations to fund their recent awards.

It is that time of year again. It is time for the youth in our beautiful community to take the big plunge. We, the members of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board of Education wish to congratulate each and every member of South Tahoe High School and Mount Tallac High School class of 2017 for all their hard work, not just for the last 4 years, but for the last 12. We are deeply proud of our seniors, and we hope that moving forward you never forget the closeness and care of a community like South Lake Tahoe.

Justin Timberlake returns to Tahoe to play in American Century Championship

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Justin Timberlake is returning to Lake Tahoe for his third consecutive year playing in the American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe. The singer/actor was an instant crowd favorite in his first year, and continued to be fan favorite in 2016.

Timberlake, an avid golfer, has a 4-handicap. Besides singing, acting, being a husband and father, he is also known for his philanthropic endeavors.

$475,000 awarded to 118 South Tahoe High seniors

During a series of recent awards ceremonies, South Tahoe High(STHS) students were recognized for academic success, attendance and bilingual immersion.

The annual Senior Awards Night saw 118 students recognized with $475,000 in scholarships. During the evening, 64 individual presentations honored one or more students for achievements.

Nevada State Fair this weekend, El Dorado County Fair follows

Area residents and visitors can enjoy two big fairs with rides, music and exhibits. The 2017 Nevada State Fair runs from June 8 to June 11, and the El Dorado County Fair goes from June 15-18.

The 2017 Nevada State Fair returns this week to Carson City bringing four days of fun, entertainment, carnival rides, culture, music and more to Mills Park.
From Thursday, June 8 to Sunday, June 11, the Nevada State Fair will showcase exhibits from each participating county throughout the Silver State.

Popular Rock Tahoe Half Marathon returns for 3rd year

Epic Tahoe Adventures (ETA) is bringing the third annual Rock Tahoe Half Marathon to Lake Tahoe on June 17, 2017. 2,000 runners are expected for the event that takes participants from Spooner Summit to Stateline along Highway 50, past some of the best scenery around.

Over 3,000 family members and friends are expected to join the runners in town for the unique "Run, Rock and Recover" event.

Community turns out for celebration of SLT Police Department's 50th anniversary

The first South Lake Tahoe Police Department community gathering was a successful one on Saturday as the 50th anniversary of the department was celebrated with hundreds of people at Lakeview Commons. There were rides on both the police and fire boats, a concert, BBQ, interactions with the police K-9s, booths, fingerprinting and an awards ceremony.

Going above and beyond the call of duty was recognized with awards to both staff members and the public.

The community is in for a treat on Saturday, May 20 as the South Lake Tahoe Police Department celebrates 50 years of service with a party at Lakeview Commons from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Locals and visitors, young and old, can ride on the SLTPD boat, see the department's K-9s, watch a demonstration over the water with CalStar at 3:00 p.m., watch how the drone assists in rescues, an awards ceremony that will honor three citizens as well as staff at 4:00 p.m., and a free BBQ. There is also a free concert on the beach.

LTCC student art exhibition kicked off with reception and awards ceremony

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — The annual Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC) Student Art Exhibition will be kicked off with a reception on Sunday, May 21 from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the school's Commons. The public is invited to the free reception and there will be live music and refreshments.

This month-long art show is always a hit. Approximately 400 works of student art will be on display from digital art and printmaking to sculpture, a culmination of students' creations over the past year.

South Lake Tahoe Police Department celebrates 50th anniversary with community party

The 50th anniversary of the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) will be celebrated with a community party on Saturday, May 20 from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Lakeview Commons.

There will be food, music, the annual SLTPD awards ceremony, as well as booths to highlight what the department does for the community. Meet SLTPD staff and officers and enjoy fun and games.

Nevada tourism honors South Shore and Carson Valley residents

The Nevada Division of Tourism recognized outstanding members of the state’s rural tourism industry at the VolunTourism Awards Dinner April 27 in Elko. The awards ceremony was a highlight of the state’s annual Rural Roundup conference.

“Tourism is a significant component of rural Nevada economies,” Claudia Vecchio, Nevada Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs director, said. “It is a $2.3 billion industry that continues to grow thanks to the efforts of the tourism professionals in rural Nevada. It is our pleasure to recognize those efforts with this year’s VolunTourism awards.”

Tahoe Art League hosts exhibit in recognition of Mental Health Awareness Month

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) honored four people with Lake Spirit Awards Wednesday who have shown exceptional commitment to protecting Lake Tahoe and fostering a spirit of collaboration in their work and volunteer time.

This year’s award winners do everything from helping protect Lake Tahoe communities from wildfire and aquatic invasive species to promoting alternative transportation and sustainable lifestyles.
