Woman dies in El Dorado County shooting; apparent murder-suicide attempt

A 28-year-old woman is dead and her fiance has been hospitalized after a shooting in Shingle Springs Wednesday evening.

On October 4, 2017 at approximately 5:47 p.m., deputies from the El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) responded to multiple reports of a shooting near the intersection of Mother Lode Drive and Sunset Lane.

They discovered two people shot at the scene. One of them, Bay Area resident Jessica Lyn Ball, was pronounced dead at the scene. A male, who was later determined to be her fiance, suffered a single gunshot would and was transported to a local hospital.

Family made homeless by hurricanes looking for home for their dogs

As we watched the horrific images out of the islands of the Caribbean after the one-two punch of Hurricanes Irma and Maria, we saw people wading through waist-deep water to get to safety, with no homes or belongings to go back to.

Two of those residents who lost their home in St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands are on a road trip and currently in Lake Tahoe. "We needed to get to nature," Lissa Ress explained about how they ended up in the Sierra.

Longest running Lake Tahoe Halloween party, the Freakers Ball, returns

For almost four decades, Halloween in South Lake Tahoe has been a party like no other with the annual Freakers Ball bringing people in from all over to demonstrate their creative talents in costume creations.

Local Brian Williams started the tradition inside the Tahoe Palace, a Chinese restaurant which was located next to Raley's at Stateline at the time. He named the event after the 1972 Dr. Hook & the Medicine Show song, "Freaker's Ball." The location changed from there, to the old Super 8 (Knight's Inn), Edgewood Tahoe, the former nightclub Turtles, then to Caesars Tahoe.

Record crowds entertained by celebrities at American Century Championship

More people attended the American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe this year than ever before in its 28 year history: 55,801. The 2016 crowds were record-breaking as well but that just lasted one year as 2017 drew 16 percent more fans.

Magician Rob Lake returns to Lake Tahoe, treats first responders to show

International award winning magician Rob Lake has returned to the South Shore, bringing his trademark illusions to Harrah's Tahoe.

On Saturday night Lake invited South Lake Tahoe area firefighters and law enforcement to the show, along with their families (and media too).

South Lake Tahoe soccer team hosts German team

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Tahoe Madrid girls soccer team took their talents to the international stage as they hosted a team who traveled to the South Shore from Germany.

"What an amazing game," said Tahoe parent Jeanna Rangel. "Great sportsmanship. No shoving or pushing. Just straight fun. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity for both teams!"

The match ended in a 1-1 tie.

Rangel said Tahoe player Ava Campbell had a few opportunities to score, but the ball just didn't make it into the goal.

Importance of understanding dangers of cold water shock

The most common misunderstanding about swimming in Lake Tahoe is that people can suffer from hypothermia, which leads to death. The real truth is that "cold water shock" will kill much quicker than hypothermia ever will.

Lake Valley Fire Deparment thanks the community

Lake Valley Volunteer Firefighter’s Association held its 55th annual Fire Fighters Ball on March 10, 2017. The Ball was given a new theme this year as the fire fighters hosted a sold out elegant event at the Edgewood Tahoe which included fine dining, a presentation by Lake Valley FD Honor Guard, auctioning of firefighters skills such as yard cleanup, car detailing to name a few, an ongoing silent auction packed with dozens of items that were so generously donated to Lake Valley by our community and live music and dancing.

Long summer of major road projects ahead for South Lake Tahoe

Dancing With the Tahoe Stars crowns new champion

A packed house at MontBleu Resort on Saturday night was on hand to see Blue Angel Cafe owner, and Lake Tahoe Community College Board Trustee Jeff Cowen win the mirror ball trophy for the 5th annual Tahoe Arts Project's Dancing with the Tahoe Stars.

Cowen, and his professional partner Rhonda Keen performed a Bollywood number that brought down the house.

Law enforcement and hospital kept busy with SnowGlobe issues

Fans of electronic music flock to South Lake Tahoe for the annual SnowGlobe outdoor music festival held December 29-31. The predominately under-30 crowd come from colleges and communities hundreds and even thousands of miles away to enjoy a specially gathered group of top artists in the electronic dance music (EDM) field. An estimated 15,000 tickets have been sold for the three-day event which is held on the South Lake Tahoe community's newly created ball fields.

Along with the fun though comes issues common at most music festivals: noise, trash, drinking and illegal drugs.

Heavenly Holiday activities wrap up with fireworks and gondola ball drop

Heavenly Holidays wraps up 2016 with a lot of activities, all at either top or the bottom of the Heavenly Gondola in South Lake Tahoe.

Besides the fresh snow and great ski conditions, there are sleigh rides, free outdoor concerts, and the unique gondola ball drop on New Year's Eve with fireworks.

Douglas County to celebrate additions at Johnson Lane Park

The Douglas County Parks and Recreation Department is celebrating the new additions at Johnson Lane Park and the public invited to a dedication of the facilities on December 1, 2016 at 10:30 a.m.

Construction on the new additions began over a year ago and was completed this Fall on new tennis and pickle ball courts, pavers, playground, pavilion and restroom building.

The park is located at 1476 Stephanie Way in Minden, Nev.

City celebrates passage of Measure P in Tuesday's election

Measure P, the two percent raise in transient occupancy tax for lodging properties in the City limits, has passed by a fairly large margin. With 100 percent of the precincts counted, a "yes" vote of 3,214 to 1,537 has passed by a 35.30 percent difference in the unofficial results.

The measure will use the funds raised by the extra tax to support recreational improvements in the City. A new recreation center, competitive pool and ball courts are in the plans.

New and traditional Halloween parties on the South Shore for adults

The 38th Annual Freaker's Ball, Lake Tahoe’s largest, oldest and most extravagant Halloween party, brings the wild with a four-ring costume circus in the Convention Center, Opal Ultra Lounge and Blu Nightclub venues at MontBleu on Saturday, Oct. 29, 2016, at 8:00 p.m. Cost is $35 prior to Saturday, then $40 at the door if tickets are available. Costume contest with prizes.

On Friday, the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino holds the 2nd Annual Rockin’ Dead Halloween Bash inside Vinyl starting at 9:00 p.m. Tickets are $25. Costume contest with prizes.

New project in Truckee to bring new Marriott hotel and apartments

A new project is being planned for the Town of Truckee that will include a 127 room hotel and five three-story apartment buildings with 138 rental units.

The hotel portion will be named Marriott SpringHill Suites and the apartments, Coburn Crossing.

The Triumph Development Hotel and Residential Project, will be laid out on over 11 acres adjacent to the Truckee Cemetery and Highway 80 on East Jiboom Street.

Editorial: Hand over heart, flags down at dusk and in bad weather

We've all seen the recent NFL player's protest over the treatment of blacks by not standing during the playing of the National Anthem at games. While I don’t agree with their method, it made me think about the way people respect the flag in general.

When growing up I always heard "Don't let the flag touch the ground," "The flag is only outside during daylight hours and not during rain or bad weather," and, as a Girl Scout, I learned how to fold the flag in the correct manner and learned the flag had to be burned if it was mistreated.

WordWave returns to South Lake Tahoe: Workshops, plays and Steampunk all rolled into one weekend

Word Wave, a festival for readers, writers, and lovers of story has returned to South Lake Tahoe. The three day long Word Wave will feature readings, workshops, panels, music, and plays from October 21-23, 2016 at Tallac Historic Site.

Every culture has used, and continues to use, story to entertain, educate, preserve history and tradition, and connect and WordWave will celebrate those words and the story in all its forms for the second year on the South Shore.

Lake Tahoe Olympians to be honored at Gold Medal Gala

Its been 50 years since the first gold medal in skiing and snowboarding was won by an American. Since Gretchen Fraser’s historic slalom gold at St. Moritz in 1948, 31 athletes from the U.S. have brought home 35 gold medals.

In the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia, Maddie Bowman and Jamie Anderson from South Lake Tahoe each won gold, Bowman in women’s halfpipe skiing and Anderson in women’s slopestyle snowboarding.

Kat Simmons says some stories will make the reader laugh and some may make them cry. Simmons hopes her book will become a personal book to the reader, in an interactive journey and will answer the question. "What is in your Daily Cup today?".

The South Tahoe Chamber will be holding their annual golf tournament at the Lake Tahoe Golf Course on Tuesday, August 23. Registration will start at 7:30 a.m., shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. This is a player scramble/best ball format.

Entry fee is $95 and covers the player's green fees, cart, range balls, awards luncheon and contests. The theme is pirates and everyone is invited to decorate their carts and come dressed in their favorite pirate finery.

Kid's History Club a new feature at Lake Tahoe Museum

American Century Championship pairings for Friday

Golf and Justin Timberlake fans will have to get up early to follow the popular celebrity over at Edgewood Tahoe on Friday.

Timberlake, paired with good friend Alfonso Ribeiro, will tee off at 6:50 a.m. The singer/actor golfed in Tahoe on Wednesday, then flew to San Diego to participate in Comic Con 2016, and will be back for an early round of golf. Timberlake plays the part of Branch in the soon-to-be-released animated movie, Trolls.

A self proclaimed golf junkie, NBA Most Valuable Player and Golden State Warrior Steph Curry, is enjoying his return to Lake Tahoe to golf in the American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe. This, his second visit to the tournament is special as he is playing with his dad, retired NBA player Dell Curry.

Women's long drive record established at Edgewood during celebrity golf action

A drive of 336-yards by the 2013 Women's World Long Drive Champion Heather LeMaster was good enough to establish a world record at elevation during the American Century Championship at Edgewood Tahoe on Tuesday.

LeMaster, a Sacramento native, was one of four contestants to attempt the record.

The establishment of a world record of a Women’s Longest Drive at Elevation will be made during next week's American Century Championship celebrity golf tournament in South Lake Tahoe.

Word Wave announces playwright contest for their fall festival

Entries are open now for the second annual Lake Tahoe WordWave One-Act Play Competition. “WordWave, A Festival of Story at Lake Tahoe,” will return Oct. 21-23 to the Tallac Historic Site in South Lake Tahoe, Calif. Winners of the play competition receive a $500 cash prize and the chance to see their work directed and produced as a staged reading on the historic Boathouse Theatre stage.

El Dorado Savings in Georgetown robbed at gunpoint

The El Dorado Savings Bank in Georgetown, Calif., was robbed at gunpoint by an unknown man on Monday, March 21. 2016 at 12:49 p.m.

The suspect is identified as being a white male adult, was wearing blue jeans, blue rain coat and a San Francisco 49ers ball cap. He was armed with a black pistol and seen leaving the area in a red Dodge Durango, most likely a 2004-09 model.

El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies, detectives and CSI personnel, along with allied law enforcement, responded to the bank and interviewed numerous employees, customers and witnesses.

A packed house at MontBleu Resort Saturday night witnessed ten local celebrity couples dancing for the ultimate prize, the mirror ball trophy, during Tahoe Art's Project annual Dancing With the Tahoe Stars fundraiser.

After a few weeks of practicing with their trained professional partner, the celebrities put on an entertaining show that brought out the cheers and applause, and lots of money for the non-profit.
