Small earthquake 36 miles southwest of South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The University of Nevada Reno's Seismological Lab is reported a 3.28 magnitude earthquake 36 miles SSW of South Lake Tahoe.

At 8:55 p.m., the earthquake occurred at a depth of 360 meters just off SR88 west of Lower Bear River Reservoir.

Earthquakes are not uncommon for the Sierra.

No other information is available at this time.

Fall Fish Festival this weekend in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The annual Fall Fish Festival returns to the South Shore on Saturday and Sunday, October 5 and 6, 2019, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Celebrate the annual fall migration of the Kokanee salmon at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center on SR-89.

The Fall Fish Festival focuses on a variety of fish species that live in Lake Tahoe and its rivers. In addition to the Kokanee, these species include the federally threatened Lahontan cutthroat trout and little-known smaller fish, such as speckled dace.

New partnership created to "Keep Tahoe Bears Wild"

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – The Tahoe Basin is bear country and natural resource and law enforcement agencies are working diligently to remind residents and visitors to practice proper food storage and trash disposal when living in or visiting bear country. To help spread the message, a new website has been launched, TahoeBears.org, where residents and visitors can go to learn everything they need to know about living, visiting and playing responsibly in bear country.

Pepper spray set off in wings of South Tahoe High

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Much of South Tahoe High was evacuated Friday afternoon after the release of pepper spray was released in the B Wing of the school during 4th period. Other wings of the high school were evacuated as South Lake Tahoe firemen and police responded.

At this time law enforcement and school officials are speaking with parents and students and the incident is under investigation.

Three staff members inhaled the spray and have suffered burning sensation in their lungs. One of them was directed to see medical attention.

The buzz about yellowjacket season in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Yellowjackets - they seem to appear whenever you sit down for your picnic lunch or other outside dining enjoyment in Lake Tahoe, especially in the months of July and August.

While the uninvited guests have some redeeming qualities they are predatory, sting pets and humans and are capable of stinging multiple times. Their aggressive behavior ruins many the outside activity. Yellowjackets are actually wasps but shouldn't be confused with other wasps, such as hornets and paper wasps. They are often mistakenly called "bees" (as in "meat bees").

Lake Tahoe and Sierra roadwork for August 25 - 31

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There are still almost two months left of scheduled roadwork around the Lake Tahoe Basin before winter hiatus. Most traffic-interfering work will be limited from 6:00 a.m. August 30 through 8:00 p.m. September 3 for Labor Day weekend. Exceptions may be granted depending on the work and route.

State Route 89 (Placer County): Motorists can expect intermittent short delays on State Route 89 at Sugar Pine Point State Park in Tahoma from 6:30-9:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 24 and from 6:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, August 25 due to the Lake Tahoe Triathlon.

Police investigating graffiti incidents in South Lake Tahoe neighborhood

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) is investigating over ten cases of graffiti that occurred in the Tahoe Sierra (Sierra Tract) neighborhood early Friday morning.

The suspect(s) used spray paint on cars, homes, bear boxes and trailers.

Anyone with information is asked to call 530-542-6100 or secret witness at 530-541-6800.

Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care's new facility taking shape

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There has been a lot of activity at the future home of Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC) on Al Tahoe Boulevard, with foundations in and buildings taking shape. When completed it will feature one rehabilitation center and 12 cages/buildings.

By October, seven of those cages will be completed and LTWC will celebrate with a grand opening.

Wild Tahoe Weekend at Taylor Creek in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It's Wild Tahoe Weekend at the US Forest Service's Taylor Creek Visitor Center June 21-22! On Saturday it's the Native Species Festival and on Sunday, the 10th annual Lake Tahoe Bird Festival.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) will host the seventh annual Native Species Festival on Sunday, June 22 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. This free family event is at the Taylor Creek Visitor Center, located three miles north of South Lake Tahoe on Highway 89.

6th annual Wildfire Expo in South Lake Tahoe Saturday

The public is invited to attend the 6th annual Wildfire Safety Expo on Saturday, June 15 from noon to 3:00 p.m. at the TJ Maxx parking lot located at the “Y” in South Lake Tahoe where Highways 50 and 89 intersect.

South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue, along with multiple local agencies, are coming together to help everyone know how to create defensible space around their home, how to make a home escape plan and other ways to be prepared in the case of fire. Smokey the Bear will make an appearance.

Six South Lake Tahoe residents part of record 617 graduating class at WNC

Western Nevada College celebrated a record 617 graduates during its commencement ceremony earlier today at the Marv Teixeira Pavilion in Carson City. The 2019 graduating class will receive 651 degrees and certificates of achievement.

Nevada Gov. Steve Sisolak and Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford addressed WNC’s graduating class during its commencement ceremony.

Keep Tahoe Bears Wild - Practice proper food storage and trash disposal

LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. – Lake Tahoe natural resource and law enforcement agencies remind residents and visitors to practice proper food storage and trash disposal at all times while in bear country. Intentional or unintentional feeding of bears can result in unwanted bear behaviors, increased human-bear conflicts, and public safety issues, as well as fines and possible jail time for violators. Each year law enforcement and state wildlife officers respond to hundreds of calls in which bears may pose a public safety threat or are damaging property. In some cases, the bear must be euthanized.

Susan Allison Mancini ~ 3/26/62 - 4/30/19

Allison, also affectionately known as Allidaughter, was born in Bishop, California to Mary Strobel and Robert Dietz when Robert was the manager of the Mammoth Mountain Inn.

She attended Immaculate Heart High School in Hollywood and graduated from South Lake Tahoe High School. She studied at El Camino College and Lake Tahoe Community College.

Allison was an accomplished sailor spending almost every weekend during her early high school years sailing to Catalina Island.

Golden Bear neighborhood to hold emergency evacuation drill

Airport Way renamed "Lisa Maloff Way" in honor of her numerous contributions

Three new cubs arrive at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - And then there were four. Blaze, Yreka, Paradise, and Pioneer are now making a temporary home at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care (LTWC).

On Tuesday, March 12, 2019, Tom and Cheryl Millham, founders of LTWC, drove to Rancho Cordova to pick up Blaze and Yreka, two very young cubs from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife's Investigation Lab.
