Bicycle and pedestrian safety a big concern in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/18/2015 - 10:03pmSafety for cyclists and pedestrians is a big concern for the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD), cycling groups and those enjoying these activities.
In the last six years, 12 people have died in South Lake Tahoe while cycling or walking. In that same time, 42 people were injured while riding bikes on the road while 37 pedestrians were hurt.

South Lake Tahoe Middle School Connectivity Plan update

The goal has been to create safer, more walkable and bikeable off highway routes around South Tahoe Middle School (STMS), Bijou Park and Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC). A $150,000 grant from the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency to the Lake Tahoe Unified School District got the activity in motion.
Keep Tahoe Blue Cycling Team seeking riders

South Lake Tahoe getting closer to having new bike park

What is it?
"It" is a combination BMX track and mountain bike skills park which will be located at the city owned Bijou Park.
Bijou Bike Park Association (BBPA) and Tahoe Area Mountain Biking Association (TAMBA) President Ben Fish laid out the proposed plan to the Council and community.
Transportation is Key in Restoring Lake Tahoe, Revitalizing Communities

At the Tahoe Talks Brown Bag Lunch this February, a design engineer for the Federal Highway Administration discussed how modern roundabouts are being used to improve traffic and make roads safer for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians, as well as where they would make the most sense at Lake Tahoe.
Tahoe Valley Area Plan one step closer to adoption

John Hitchcock, the City of South Lake Tahoe Planning Manager, gave the Council another presentation on the status of the plan and where things stand as of today during Tuesday's City Council meeting.
First proposed in the early 1990's, the resurrection of the Tahoe Valley Area plan made great strides towards adoption in 2014 with Hitchcock holding four public meetings where input was requested, presenting the plan to TRPA three times, three times to City Council and twice to the planning commission.
South Lake Tahoe bike trails to receive snow removal in pilot program
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/12/2015 - 10:54pmDue to a lack of snow in South Lake Tahoe, the new bike path snow removal policy has yet to be put into action.
While snow plows are deployed when three inches of snow accumulates on roadways, there was never a policy to determine when snow would be removed on bike trails.
This winter the City has launched a pilot program to include snow removal on Class 1 bike paths as a secondary feature, after roads and City buildings, during a significant snow event.

Back in April, the Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) was awarded over $150,000 to look into providing safer, off highway opportunities around South Tahoe Middle School (STMS). The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) awarded the grant as part of their $500,000 "On Our Way" program grants.
Bike Way Finding Signs Being Tested in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Mon, 09/08/2014 - 10:27pmHave you noticed the new, blue signs placed along some of the South Lake Tahoe bike trails? They are part of a pilot way finding sign project to help cyclists between Kingsbury Grade and Meyers.
There are currently eight signs up in four locations, so people using the trails can see the directions from opposing views.
According to Steve Noll, community planning consultant with Design Workshop, “the international best practices for way finding signs consist of four elements known as 'The Four D’s: distance, direction, destination and distinction'."

Bike trails in South Lake Tahoe received rehabilitation this summer with $250,000 of funds from Measure R. Trails inside city limits received new paving and are open and ready to ride. Planned restoration of the trails over bridges at Trout Creek and Upper Truckee Meadow are not completed yet and expected to be done this fall.
New bike trail from Fallen Leaf Lake to Lake Tahoe opens
Submitted by paula on Sat, 08/16/2014 - 10:22pmThere is a new way to enjoy two lakes with just a quick bike ride along the bike trail just completed by the U.S. Forest Service.
The Fallen Leaf Bike Path connects cyclists from the Fallen Leaf Lake Campground to the Pope Baldwin National Recreation Trail. The trail offers riders a safe and exciting alternative.
As reported by South Tahoe Now in April, the new trail also provided installation of bmps, upgrades, reconstruction and relocation of adjacent unauthorized trails.
Bike trails in South Lake Tahoe getting $725,000 facelift

2.6 miles of existing trails that were installed over 20 years ago are seeing new life thanks to a $250,000 contribution through Measure R funds and $475,452 grant funding through Caltrans Bicycle Transportation Authority.
Bike Trails in South Lake Tahoe to Undergo Rehabilitation This Summer
Submitted by paula on Fri, 06/20/2014 - 12:17amSeveral stretches of bike trails in South Lake Tahoe will receive some much needed attention in July when 2.6 miles of trails are restored.
The Class 1 Bicycle Trail Rehabilitation Project will use funds from Measure R ($250,000) and $475,452 grant funding through Caltrans Bicycle Transportation Authority to fix the 20 year old trails.
July 7th will be the project's starting date and all is expected to be completed around August 9th.
New Bike Trail in South Lake Tahoe Dedicated on Thursday
Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/19/2014 - 11:59pmThe second segment of the Stateline to Stateline Bikeway was dedicated during a ceremony on Thursday. The 1.2-mile shared-use bike path connects Elks Point with Round hill Pines on the Nevada side.
This new stretch adds to the existing path for a total of 2.2 miles and provides access to Rabe Meadow with Nevada Beach and Round Hill Pines Resort.
Cycle Through Wine Country to Support Keeping Tahoe Blue

Riders will help raise awareness of climate change, alternative modes of transportation and the effort to Keep Tahoe Blue.

Lake Tahoe Environmental Improvement Program highlighted by 15 years of Achievement

Recreation dollars being spent on fields, bike trails

Improvements to South Lake Tahoe ball fields and bike trails will be in the ground by the time the building season is over in the fall.
The upgrades all have to do with the transformation of Measure S into Measure R. South Shore voters on the California side decided the recreation measure was too limiting and that by changing the language more money could be spent on some critical items.

Lake Tahoe is a special place, loved and used by millions of visitors each year from around the world. The local forest service has been at the forefront of working collaboratively with user groups and the public to ensure that protecting the environment of this special place, still allows for uses that are compatible and fun.
TRPA: Pointless lawsuit a major step backward for Lake Tahoe

Homewood lawsuit remanded back to TRPA on one issue

The court remanded the case back to TRPA on one very limited issue concerning the adequacy of the economic analysis related to one of the alternatives studied, TRPA officials said.

Tahoe Fund Hosts Croquet Party on August 12

The environmental non-profit is preparing for its 2nd Annual Founders Circle Summer Dinner, to be held at Edgewood Tahoe’s historic Friday’s Station on Sunday, August 12th. Billed as a night to celebrate the organization’s early funders and the Lake, the event will include “Tahoe Croquet” and a gourmet dinner on the lawn. Senators Feinstein, Heller and Governor Brown have all confirmed their attendance.

Two percent TOT funds Tahoe City project; future money for Kings Beach

The renewal, called Measure F, is not a tax increase and, if passed, would continue to be paid by lodging guests only via the TOT bed tax when they spend the night in North Lake Tahoe. North Lake Tahoe residents would not be taxed under Measure F.

Tahoe Fund Recruiting Founding CEO

Over the next 10 years the CEO will be responsible for raising and distributing $50 million to restore and enhance the Lake, including work on bike trails, restoration projects, interpretive programs, public parks and related projects. Founded in 2010, Tahoe Fund raises private money to supplement the limited public funding available for such efforts.

As part of Measure R, passed last month to provide funding for both ballfields and bike trails in the community, committees to advise the JPA on the their needs and various relevant issues must be formed. The committees will consist of seven members each.

Regional transportation issues will be focus of November workshops

The Tahoe Metropolitan Planning Organization will host two workshops November 1 and 3 to get public input on transportation priorities. The workshops are part of a four-year update of the Regional Transportation Plan (Mobility 2035) being carried out by TMPO and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency. The agencies encourage public input to better serve the needs of the community, according to TRPA Transportation Planning Manager Nick Haven.
