LAKE TAHOE, Calif./Nev. - Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District (TDFPD) and California State Parks will conduct understory burns at Lake Tahoe in the coming days.

TDFPD is planning on burning in Glenbrook on May 12 and in Zephyr Cove on May 20, 2020. State Paks is planning on burning at Sugar Pine Point State Park on the West Shore on May 11 and May 18. Both are weather permitting and smoke be visible.

LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The Humane Society of Truckee-Tahoe (HSTT) is joining local veterinarians as well as the Town of Truckee in providing free spay and neuter surgeries during World Spay Day on February 25 and February's Spay/Neuter Awareness Month around Lake Tahoe.

The procedures are available for qualifying cats or dogs in the community to mark World Spay Day on February 25th, 2020. South Lake Tahoe appointments are full that day, but there are still some available on the North Shore.

The Lake Tahoe Basin Fall Prescribed Fire Program may begin as early as September 24, 2019, under the management of the Tahoe Fire & Fuels Team (TFFT), which includes local, state and federal fire and land management agencies.

Weather and conditions permitting, California State Park crews may begin prescribed fire operations in Burton Creek State Park near Tahoe City and in a couple of weeks move to D.L. Bliss State Park near Tahoma.

Smoke will likely be present.

Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe recently held their annual awards program that honor women for their volunteer efforts in the community. President Pam Barrett welcomed members, guests and awardees. Mistress of Ceremonies was Ellen Camacho.

Operations may take place near Glenbrook on the East Shore; near Heavenly Mountain Resort’s Boulder and California lodges, near Twin Peaks and in Baldwin Meadow on the South Shore; in D.L. Bliss and Burton Creek state parks and near Rubicon Estates on the West Shore; and on urban lots in Kings Beach on the North Shore.

In August, the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CAL FIRE) awarded $27.5 million to fund high-priority forest health projects designed to combat climate change and reduce the risk of wildfires.

During their board meeting Thursday the California Tahoe Conservancy Board accepted their portion, a $2.3 million grant, for fire prevention projects and related efforts as part of the Tahoe-Central Sierra Initiative.

After taking a break during the Thanksgiving holiday, the Tahoe Fire and Fuels Team (TFFT) resume prescribed fire operations next week, beginning Monday, November 27, 2017, weather permitting.

North Lake Tahoe Fire Protection District, California State Parks and the California Tahoe Conservancy will conduct prescribed fire operations above Incline Village, D.L. Bliss and Burton Creek state parks and near the airport in South Lake Tahoe. Smoke may be visible.

The Foundation for Carson City Parks & Recreation (FCCPR), is hosting an Open House at the historic Wungnema House located in Mills Park, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 27, 2017. Admission to the open house is free. This will be an opportunity to learn about this historic building and about the Foundation.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) released the final decision to reduce hazardous fuels on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe. The West Shore Wildland Urban Interface (WUI) Fuels Reduction and Forest Health Project will treat approximately 4,875 acres extending from Emerald Bay to Burton Creek State Park.

If conditions are favorable next week, the Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, California State Parks and the U.S. Forest Service are scheduled to continue prescribed fire operations starting Monday, April 17. If favorable, operations are scheduled near Meeks Bay, Tahoe City, Glenbrook, Round Hill, Lower Kingsbury Grade, South Lake Tahoe, and Meyers. Weather permitting, operations may continue over the next several weeks.

A) 30 acres in the Glenbrook Area - Tahoe Douglas Fire District

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. – The Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District, California State Parks and the U.S. Forest Service plan on continuing prescribed fire operations April 3, weather and conditions permitting.

Scheduled operations are near Tahoe City, Glenbrook, Round Hill, Kingsbury Grade, and Meyers.

A) 30 acres in Glenbrook
B) 40 acres at Edgewood Creek
C) 15 acres on Lower Kingsbury
D) 30 acres at Burton Creek State Park
E) 50 acres at Logan Creek and Highway 50 near Cave Rock
F) 20 acres on Grass Lake Road and SR89
G) 30 acres on SR89 and Luther Pass

If conditions are favorable, California State Parks and the U.S. Forest Service may resume prescribed fire operations beginning today, March 16, 2017. Operations may take place near Tahoe City and Glenbrook and may continue as conditions allow.

On the schedule is the burning of 50 acres of hand piles at Logan Creek Drive and Highway 50 as well as 30 acres at Burton Creek State Park between North Tahoe High and Rocky Ridge Properties.

Sierra at Tahoe created "Keep Sierra Clean Day" ten years ago to help protect the environment before the winter season sets in.

Its a year round job, but this fall event gets friends and neighbors, locals and visitors together on the mountain to give it a good clean up.

Volunteers will ide the chairlift, clean the mountain and collect prizes, and sneak in a great peek at the view while at it!

There will be a free lunch and live music by Mic Smith.

NOTE: Most traffic-interfering work will be restricted until 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 5 due to the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

SPECIAL EVENT

U.S. Highway 50 (El Dorado County) from the “Y” at Lake Tahoe Boulevard and State Route 89 North to Rufus Allen Boulevard: Motorists can expect a moving closure of both lanes from 10 a.m. to Noon Monday July 4 for the City of South Lake Tahoe 4th of July parade.

LONG-TERM PROJECTS

The final snowboard FIS World Cup slopestyle event took place Sunday in Spindleruv Mlyn, Czech Republic, and Jamie Anderson from Meyers won the crystal globe award for women’s snowboard slopestyle despite skipping the final event of the season. Anderson also claimed the crystal globe for overall freestyle snowboarding.

On the men's side, Chris Corning (Arvada, CO) hit the podium with a second-place finish, and secured the overall World Cup Slopestyle title.
