Besides the action in the air there will be numerous attractions accessible to the public including a wide variety of items for sale and informational booths, over 70 in all.

Douglas County narrows search down to two for Asst. County Manager position

The search for a new Assistant County Manager for Douglas County is almost over as Bradley Hurley and Philip Ritger have been chosen as the final two candidates. The public is invited to meet the two on August 21 from 5:00 p.m to 7:00 p.m. at the Carson Valley Inn.

Last Monday, panel interviews were conducted for eight applicants, and from that group Hurley and Ritger were chosen to be interviewed by County Manager Larry Werner.

Ritger is the current Town of Genoa Manager and Hurley the Deputy Communications Officer with the Department of Defense. Both are residents of Douglas County.

Get doused in color during Tahoe Youth & Family Services annual 5k run

Runners get covered from head to toe in several different colors as running/walking a 5k course. As participants pass each 1K marker, the color lets loose! All of the colors are safe and even edible as they are corn starch based.

Two new deputies for Douglas County Sheriff's Office

Two new deputy sheriffs, Dustin Tremaine and Zack Hickman, were recently administered the oath of office during ceremonies held by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

Both new deputies were raised in the Carson Valley, graduated from Douglas High School in 2006 and earned associate degrees from Western Nevada College (WNC).

Dustin Tremaine was awarded an Associate’s Degree in Marketing from WNC. He has been employed as a firefighter by the Nevada Division of Forestry since 2015. He also works as a seasonal firefighter and on ski patrol at Heavenly Valley Ski Resort.

Tahoe Rim Trail work days to reroute trail near Mott Canyon

The Tahoe Rim Trail Association is holding their biggest trail project of the year and are looking for volunteers to lend a hand. They will be rerouting the trail near Mott Canyon off the dusty, steep access road.

Once finished, the trail will be a beautiful single-track trail with expansive views of the Carson Valley.

Two die in Minden skydiving accident

August 4 update: The cause of the accident is still under investigation. The pair's parachute deployed but there was an unknown problem that caused it to not slow their descent.

Update 2:55 p.m.: At approximately 10:15 am on Thursday, August 3rd, 2017, deputies of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office were called to a report of two skydivers down near the Minden Airport. Upon arrival, deputies found two deceased skydivers on the ground outside the perimeter of the airport.

David Antonucci to speak on Mark Twain at Dangberg Historic Park

Author David C. Antonucci will speak on his book Fairest Picture: Mark Twain at Lake Tahoe at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Saturday, August 12, at 10:00 am.

In 1861, Samuel Clemens, the man who would become Mark Twain, hiked to Lake Tahoe to stake a claim for a timber ranch. He spent many blissful days on the Lake but carelessly allowed his campfire to escape, creating a spectacular wildfire. He later wrote about his experiences in his 1872 memoir, Roughing It.

Chautauqua of Major Ormsby and Lucky Bill at Dangberg Historic Park

Major William Mathew Ormsby was born in 1814 in Mercer County, Pennsylvania. Ormsby was a teamster, failed horse dealer, citizen at large, visionary and one of the most important figures in the founding of Nevada and its capitol, Carson City. He was killed in 1860 during the Pyramid Lake Paiute uprising.

Author to speak on Nevada State Children's Home at Dangberg Historic Park

Small earthquakes north of Incline Village

he Sierra Nevada are not stranger to earthquakes, and recent swarms of quakes in the Carson Valley, Mammoth Lakes and Donner Lake are not out of the ordinary.

Overnight, a few of those earthquakes hit in around the North Shroe of Lake Tahoe.

Boys Scouts host 4th annual Car and Truck Show in Carson City

In their 77th year of providing scouting opportunities to boys in the Carson City and Carson Valley area, Boy Scout Troop 33 is hosting their 4th annual Send A Scout to Camp Car and Truck Show on Saturday, August 12 at Fuji Park in Carson City from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

Participants can either pre-register or sign up the day of the event. Cost is $40. Each participant will get a T-shirt, one lunch meal ticket, and a dash plaque.

Detwiler Fire burns 70,596 acres; Haze expected Friday in Lake Tahoe-Reno-Carson City area

7:45 p.m. update: There is less smoke in the Lake Tahoe basin this evening but air quality is still measuring in the "Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups" range. The Detwiler Fire is burning in drought stricken chaparral and in an area of severe tree mortality and has consumed 70,596 acres and is now 10 percent contained.

As of tonight, 50 residences and 49 other structures have been destroyed and widespread evacuation orders are still in place.

Widespread haze over Lake Tahoe, Reno and Carson City areas is forecast again for Friday.

Lake Tahoe air quality to continue in the unhealthy range

The intensifying Detwiler Fire near Mariposa, Calif. continues to send smoke into the Lake Tahoe Basin, Alpine County, Reno, Carson City and the Carson Valley, causing air quality to be in the unhealthy range.

As of Wednesday morning the Detwiler fire had burned over 45,000 acres, sending a plume of smoke due north, into our area. It is 7 percent contained and caused the evacuation of the town of Mariposa as well as many surrounding roads and neighborhoods.

Detwiler Fire near Mariposa grows, smoke/haze expected to continue in Lake Tahoe

The Detwiler Fire near Mariposa, Calif. has grown to 19,600 acres this evening, prompting evacuation of the town as well as surrounding areas near Highways 49 and 140.

The fire remains at fiver percent contained.

At this time, one structure has been destroyed and one damaged, and 300 other buildings are threatened. 780 firefighting personnel are at the scene which is west of Yosemite and east of Lake McClure. Nine airtankers, 100 engines, 5 helicopters, 9 dozers and 4 water tenders are being used on the fire.

Western Heritage Celebration at Dangberg Historic Park

The event’s second year will include a heritage quilting presentation, a Victorian dressing presentation, songs about local history and cowboy poetry, as well as gold panning and other children’s activities.

The Carson Valley Quilt Guild returns for its second year and will give a demonstration on a variety of quilting methods including the “Crazy Quilt”. This demonstration is from 11:00 am until Noon.

Fatal crash on Kingsbury Grade; Road closed

11:10 p.m. update: The Nevada Highway Patrol Fatal Team is at the scene of tonight's fatal crash on Kingsbury Grade between Tramway Drive and Foothill. The road is closed on the valley side and all traffic trying to head over from the lake side is being turned around at Tramway.

Kingsbury Grade is closed at this hour between Tramway Drive and the Carson Valley as emergency crews work to clear an earlier fatal crash that claimed the lives of two people.

The crash happened about two miles up from the valley floor.

Foothill Fire burning near Genoa Lakes Golf

7:15 p.m. update: Fire crews have halted the progress of the Foothill Fire in Douglas County near Genoa Lakes Golf Resort. Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center has updated the amount of acreage burned to 25 acres.

Winds in the area are still an issue and firefighters remain on the scene.

A grass and brush fire in Douglas County has grown to 85 acres according to Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center. Known as the Foothill Fire, it is burning in the area near the new Genoa Lakes ranch course off of Jacks Valley Road in Douglas County.

South Shore casinos win big in May

The Nevada Gaming Commission released their figures for the month of May, and Stateline casinos on the South Shore were the biggest winners in the state.

The team of Harrah's, Harveys, Hard Rock, MontBleu and Lakeside Inn had a "gaming win" of $17,821,193, up 30 percent from May in 2016. Most other areas saw single digit losses and wins, and the state as a whole had a win of $991,604,782

The "gaming win" represents the computed income of casinos before business expenses and taxes.

North Shore casinos saw a drop of 7.33 percent in their win of $1,514,359.

Chautauqua of Snowshoe Thompson

Steve Hale will portray the legendary mailman of the Sierra, Jon A. “Snowshoe Thompson, at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, June 21, at 6:30 pm.

When Jon Thompson put on his 8-foot skis and heavy leather mail pack in 1856, he skied to Genoa and into history. His two to three day 90-mile crossings (one way) carrying the mail and valuable packages of up to 100 pounds on his back through the snow have never been physically duplicated, not even with modern equipment. This extraordinary feat has become part of the legacy and spirit of the pioneer American West.

3.5 earthquake southeast of Gardnerville

The Nevada Seismological Laboratory in Reno is reporting another earthquake for the Carson Valley. The most recent one registered 3.5 and was located 11.8 miles southeast of Gardnerville at 9:31 p.m. Friday, June 9.

This follows a small swarm of quakes in the area that started on Tuesday, June 6 when a 3.9 tremor occurred.

In the Mammoth Lakes region tonight there have been six earthquakes 1.1 - 2.1.

Earthquake swarm in Carson Valley not out of ordinary

In the last 48 hours there have been three dozen earthquakes, the largest being 3.74 and the smallest being about 1.0 in an area between Gardnerville and Topaz Lake.

"This is the nature of earthquakes," said Mickey Cassar, a records tech with seismic data at University of Nevada, Reno. "There are ebbs and flows. Earthquakes happen this way, a sequence goes on for awhile."

Mammoth Lakes, Calif., and Hawthorne, Nevada have had several dozen earthquakes over the past few months, 35 in Mammoth Lakes and almost 55 in Hawthorne just this week.

Woman rescued from Upper Truckee River in South Lake Tahoe

6/12/17 8:00 p.m. update - The woman who was rescued from the river, Stephanie Waggoner of Minden, Nev., has died as result falling off her paddleboard in South Lake Tahoe. The Washoe County Coroner's Office will likely release the cause of death Tuesday or Wednesday.

A 50-year-old woman from the Carson Valley nearly drowned in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday after she fell off her paddle board and got caught underwater in the cold and swift Upper Truckee River.

Douglas County Sheriff's Deputy Teresa Duffy will lead the 107th annual Carson Valley Days parade as the Grand Marshall. The theme of the parade and festival is "A Salute to First Responders."

The Carson Valley Active 20-30 Club is organizing the event which runs from June 9 to June 11. The club wanted to raise awareness, celebrate, honor and, most importantly, say thank you to the first responders of Douglas County, those who protect the community on a daily basis.

Douglas County seniors and community center receive generator donation

Douglas County Community & Senior Center received a 125 KW generator for backup emergency power that will allow the facility to better serve as an emergency evacuation facility. The generator will also protect 8,000 + frozen meals and $10,000 worth of food products held in the freezers and coolers in the Senior Center Dining Room kitchens during a power outage. This emergency generator will also provide power in the Douglas County Health Clinic, located inside the Community and Senior Center which services the healthcare needs of many Douglas County residents.

Carson Valley Starbucks facility to expand, 100 jobs being added

Starbucks operations in Nevada’s Carson Valley plans to grow substantially over the next year with the addition of 700,000 square feet to the distribution portion of the Starbucks Carson Valley Roasting Plant and Distribution Center in Minden, Nev. The expansion will bring nearly 100 new jobs to the location in the first year after completion, bringing the distribution workforce to nearly 350.

A tree caught on fire Monday afternoon after being struck by lightning. The tree and surrounding brush are still burning today and the fire has covered about one acre in steep terrain above Foothill Road in the Carson Valley southeast of Lake Tahoe.

Two engine crews hiked up to the fire and they are getting assistance from helicopter drops of water.

Fire officials kept an eye on the fire last night since hiking into the remote area was not safe for crews. They headed up the mountain Tuesday according to the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center.

Douglas County reports increase in thefts from unlocked cars

The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is advising the public of an increase in vehicle burglaries in the county recently. There have been several reported cases of suspects getting into unlocked cars, just as there has been in South Lake Tahoe.

In Douglas County the increase began in the last two weeks and have up to this point have occurred in the Gardnerville Ranchos, Gardnerville and Minden. The losses during these car burglaries have been coin change and cell phones but any loss causes emotional and financial damage.

Douglas County 6th graders learn about Minden-Tahoe Airport

Four hundred Douglas County middle school students toured Minden-Tahoe Airport last week. Students had the opportunity to learn about how airplanes and airports work and how they might someday be involved in aviation. The organizers of the four day program calculated that more than 38 people volunteered some 350 hours in order to make this program a success.

New zip line to go through treetops in South Lake Tahoe this summer

The Silver Rush, a new 4,159-foot long zip line opening this summer at Heavenly's Epic Discovery, will take users from tree-to-tree at speeds up to 40 miles per hour. Overlooking the Carson Valley, Silver Rush is comprised of five segmented zip lines; the final of which flies guests over the waters of East Peak Lake.

Once the ride is completed, guests enjoy a scenic ATV ride back to the top of the Gondola. It is a three-hour long experience.

Professional cyclists start arriving in Lake Tahoe for two stages of Amgen

Tyler and Cheryl Cannon, owners of Sprouts Cafe in South Lake Tahoe, opened their doors Tuesday to two of the cycling teams in town for two stages of the Amgen Breakaway from Heart DiseaseTM Women's Race empowered with SRAM on May 11-12.

DROPS and United Healthcare (UHC) were there not only to enjoy the food Sprouts is known for, but to spend time with media and sharing their stories two days before race time.
