Mary Pickford was America’s Sweetheart. Pickford was an actress on the stage and in film, a writer, a producer, a director, and co-founder of a movie studio. She socialized with Hollywood’s most famous stars and married a swashbuckling film hero, Douglas Fairbanks. In 1955, Mary Pickford published her autobiography, Sunshine and Shadows. In this presentation, Pickford will discuss her book and her life.

Sarah Winnemucca Hopkins will sing the “Star-Spangled Banner” for the Opening Ceremony and the Closing Ceremony will feature Krista Jenkins singing "America the Beautiful".

Muir’s activism helped to preserve the Yosemite Valley, Sequoia National Park and other wilderness areas.

Sunday morning accident wipes out power for 10,000 in Carson City/Carson Valley
Submitted by paula on Sun, 08/07/2016 - 4:23pmA vehicle hit a power pole on Curry Street in Carson City Sunday morning just after 9:00 a.m., taking out power to about 4,500 customers in the city limits and another 5,450 customers in Douglas County.
The Carson City Sheriff's Office reported major issues with traffic flow as lights were out at major intersections. Carson City motels and restaurants were all full at the time of the outage after a busy summer weekend.

Few people living in Nevada today know that Baby Face Nelson, whose given name was Lester Gillis, spent a great deal of time in Nevada. He was avoiding the heat from authorities in the Midwest. In Reno, he was afforded protection from arrest and incarceration because of his connections to Bill Graham and James McKay. Their political and business connections covered almost the entire state.

Stephen Tying Mather distinguished himself as a consummate salesman, including the iconic 20 Mule Team Borax brand, which helped him amass a fortune by the early 20th century. After visiting the new western national parks and meeting John Muir, Mather went on to mold the vision of the new National Park Service and was honored by being appointed its first director in 1916.

He helped usher in the era known as “The Golden Age of Sport” along with baseball’s Babe Ruth, football’s Red Grange, golf’s Bobby Jones and tennis’ Bill Tilden.

Smoke in Lake Tahoe basin from fire burning in Northern California
Submitted by paula on Mon, 07/25/2016 - 10:12amSmoke has moved into the Lake Tahoe basin and Northern Nevada, causing concern among those looking at the sky this morning.
According to South Lake Tahoe Fire Chief Jeff Meston, the smoke is most likely from the Soberanes Fire burning near Big Sur in Monterey County. The National Weather Service in Reno believes the same.
No fires are burning near Lake Tahoe or Reno.
As of 7:00 a.m. Monday, the Soberanes Fire has consumed 14,897 acres is 5 percent contained.
New chief at the helm of Tahoe Douglas Fire Department
Submitted by paula on Fri, 07/22/2016 - 4:07pmRetired Tahoe Douglas Fire Chief Ben Sharit can now rest assured that his former fire department is in good hands with the promotion of Scott Baker to Fire Chief. Baker took over the controls in July 1.
He came to the Tahoe Douglas Fire Department in December as Assistant Chief as a nation-wide search, but it turned out they didn't have to look far as Baker was Division Chief of Fleet and Facilities for the Reno Fire Department.
Zen Garden created in memory of Live Violence Free staff member

The unexpected death caught everyone by surprise from family and friends to those she served in Alpine County through her position as the non-profit agency's coordinator.
"We were totally shocked," LVF Executive Director Jane Flavin said of Kline's passing.

Douglas County man returns home to be DCSO deputy
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/20/2016 - 5:02pmCole Sonneman, a Carson Valley native, was sworn in on July 18 as the newest deputy with the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
Sonnemann was raised in the Carson Valley and spent several years in the DCSO Explorer Program as a teenager with Deputies Teresa Duffy and Chris Griffith. Sonneman said he remembers attending DARE lessons taught by Griffith while attending Gardnerville Elementary School.

Blue Go out, TTD in, as operations change July 1

42 buses make up the local system which have more than 800,000 trips annually on their routes which cover both sides of the state line including commuter bus service from the lake to Carson City and the Carson Valley.

July 6, 2016 - 6:30pm Chautauqua performers Dana Blane, Larry Lippmann and Mike Trute will portray local historical figures Donner Party survivor “Patty Reed”, Stagecoach driver “Hank Monk” and U.S. Marshall “Warren Wasson” at the Dangberg Home Ranch Historic Park on Wednesday, July 6, at 6:30 pm.
Patty Reed was 8 years old when her family joined the movement west to settle in California. As survivors of the ill-fated 1846 Donner Party, the tremendous hardships they endured left the family destitute. The little doll Patty hid in her clothing survives until this day.

Douglas County Citizen Patrol welcomes 35 new volunteers

The volunteers are now able to assist the sheriff’s office by conducting vacation checks on residences, marking and towing abandoned vehicles on public streets, enforcing handicapped parking, writing minor reports such as lost wallets or cell phones, conduct VIN checks, and work special events such as traffic contol to Carson Valley Days, Fishing Derby and Parade of Lights.
Barton Auxiliary gives out scholarships to help those pursuing medical careers

“It is our hope to give a head start to our future doctors, nurses, physical therapists, medical techs, biologists, psychologists, and first responders,” says Joanne Donmoyer, an Auxiliary and Scholarship Committee member. "The medical and science professions are very important in Tahoe, and we would be so pleased if some of our young people returned and served our community.”

Woman sought by authorities on suspicion of multiple felonies

Haley Douglas is actively being sought on charges on burglary, fraud, theft and uttering ba forged instrument. Law enforcement believes she is in the Carson Valley.
On June 13, DCSO deputies went to an address in the Gardnerville Ranchos and were told by a family member that she had left an hour prior and has not been seen since. There is no associated vehicle information.
Gardnerville fire displaces residents, injures two

At 5:40 p.m., East Fork Fire Department and Douglas County Sheriff's deputies arrived at the complex located at 1375 Lampe Lane and found the building fully engulfed. The called in several other fire safety agencies to assist including Tahoe Douglas, Carson City, Storey County, Reno, Truckee Meadows, Mono County and REMSA. 50 personnel responded along with 16 pieces of equipment.

New community health nurse hired for Douglas County

After a nationwide recruitment, Carson City Health and Human Services along with Douglas County selected Fuller which included an interview process which began in February, 2016 and included a panel of nursing, social services, and administrative leadership from the Carson City and Douglas County Community Health and Social Services agencies.

South Lake Tahoe Staples reportedly closing in June

Even though unconfirmed with the corporate offices, employees at the store said they will be closing their doors on June 4, 2016. When South Tahoe Now spoke to store management we were referred to the corporate offices who have not returned calls.
DCSO: Veterinarian found dead in Carson City was sole suspect in lewdness investigation
Submitted by paula on Fri, 04/08/2016 - 6:16pmThe Douglas County Sheriff’s Office has released information regarding the death of Carson Valley veterinarian Lance Gorrindo earlier this week:
“At the time of Lance Gorrindo’s death he was the sole suspect being sought by the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office in connection to an active Lewdness with a Minor investigation. The identity of the victim is confidential by law and not subject to disclosure.”
Formal charges had not been filed against Gorrindo prior to his death, according to Carson Valley Times.
