South Lake Tahoe offers year of emergency preparation tips

As part of the City's initiative to increase communications, it is offering a 12-part monthly series during 2013 highlighting emergency preparedness. These useful tools will assist citizens in preparing for emergencies.
The first emergency guide in the series, listed below, focuses on “Action Plans” and provides suggestions for creating a family emergency disaster plan. The guide also provides contact numbers for agencies located within City limits and throughout El Dorado County.
El Dorado County Sheriff's Office offers academy for citizens
Submitted by Editor on Tue, 02/05/2013 - 9:15amThe El Dorado County Sheriff's Office has announced classes for its 2013 Citizen's Academy. Residents of the county can learn about the law enforcement agency and its many functions, said Sheriff John D’Agostini.
Classes run one night each week, (typically Tuesdays) from 6 to 9 p.m.. The next academy is scheduled to begin March 19 and will end June 25, 2013 The academy classes are held at the Sheriff’s Placerville OES training facility. The Citizen’s Academy is offered on a first come first served basis to El Dorado County residence and is free of charge.

Nevada Gov. Sandoval declares 'State of Emergency' citing extreme cold in Silver State

“The declaration is a precautionary measure to ensure propane truck operators can support the needs of Nevada citizens during this prolonged cold weather pattern,” Sandoval said.

This is a tragedy that has gained national attention and has wrenched the hearts of Carson City residents. Saturday night, December 15, as the sun sets at 6 p.m., members of the Carson City business community will host a candlelight vigil on the sidewalk of the Nevada State Capitol building, located at 101 North Carson Street.
Supervisors Offer Support for Naming Lake Tahoe Peak for Fallen Warriors
Submitted by Editor on Thu, 12/13/2012 - 9:58amThe Placer County Supervisors this week gave their support to efforts to name an unnamed peak in Eastern Placer County in honor of three Tahoe-area servicemen who were killed in action in the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The peak, located in the Lake Tahoe Basin on United States Forest Service land in Placer County, will be called Gold Star Peak.
The three fallen men include two soldiers and one Marine:
PFC Phillip Brandon Williams, USMC, 21, died October 9, 2006 in Iraq;
Sergeant Timothy M. Smith, USA, 25, died April 7, 2008 in Iraq; and

Festival of Trees and Lights begins Thursday

Throughout the last three-years, Barton Foundation has dedicated funds raised from The Festival to Barton Health’s Community Clinic expansion and renovation. A Level III trauma center, located in Barton Memorial Hospital’s Emergency Department (E.D.), is this year’s fundraising initiative.

"Gino" has fished Tahoe for some 30 years and is one of the top, if not the top, fishing guides at that lake.
Sigh, and as usual on that day, Man's Favorite Sport belonged to Elaine for the fourth straight year!
South Lake Tahoe Police warn of car repair scam

Two men approached an 89-year-old in the Safeway store parking lot on Johnson Boulevard and offered to fix a dent in the senior citizen's car for $80 in cash plus an additional $20 for more work later.

Douglas County offers free flu shot clinic

This event is open to the general public. Both the flu shot and the nasal spray will be available.

Tahoe Douglas Fire District uses insurance bonus money to reward local nonprofits

South Lake Tahoe Police provide details after car slams into cyclist, gas station

The victim, a 38-year-old man, remains in an intensive care unit at Renown Medical Center in Reno. South Lake Tahoe Police have commended citizens for their part in locating the suspect.

UNR archeologist leads Virginia City hospital excavation team

St. Mary Louise Hospital in Virginia City opened in 1876 and served the mining community until the early 20th century.
Volunteers pitch in with Al Tahoe neighborhood clean-up
Submitted by Editor on Sat, 07/14/2012 - 2:45pmNeighbors in Al Tahoe participated in a volunteer clean-up effort Saturday as an outcome of their most recent neighborhood meeting. Gerry and Jill Carter were the first to arrive and started collecting trash and debris at Regan Beach.
A local neighbor who was unable to tackle years of mounting debris from previous tenants was the recipient of a group volunteer effort. With the help of a volunteer with a trailer, the group was able to remove an old sofa, dilapidated shed remnants and an assortment of materials which were hauled off the property and created a dramatic improvement.

Youth immediately began playing on the park equipment and the basketball court was ready to host its first game while hot dogs and hamburgers were grilled for the crowd of families and dignitaries to enjoy.

Face animal cruelty charges if you leave your pet inside a hot vehicle
Submitted by Editor on Wed, 06/27/2012 - 2:12amEl Dorado County Animal Services is advising pet owners to not leave dogs, cats or other pets unattended in vehicles during warm weather. According to Henry Brzezinski, Chief of Animal Services, if the outside temperature is 80 degrees or higher, temperatures inside vehicles can climb to 120 degrees or more within ten to twenty minutes, even with the windows opened two or three inches; heat stroke, irreparable brain damage and death can follow shortly thereafter.

Lake Tahoe launches public participation campaign for new vision

Douglas agency warns people to stay out of Preacher Mine fire area

Curious citizens and off-road vehicle operators have been utilizing the roadways and backcountry area where the fire burned, and this has caused problems for the fire mop-up crews still operating in the area.
Some smoldering hot spots still remain in the area, and hand crews will be operating in the area for several more days extinguishing them.
Heavenly Mountain Resort kicks off South Lake Tahoe summer season
