South Lake Tahoe police officers will be part of the waitstaff at Applebee's on Friday, March 29 from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. to raise money for Special Olympics Northern California.

One-hundred percent of the tips the "celebrity waiters" earn will be donated directly to Special Olympics Northern California, which provides year-round sports training and competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities.

South Lake Tahoe Olympians head to Breckenridge for Dew Tour

South Lake Tahoe Olympians Jamie Anderson, Hannah Teter and Maddie Bowman are headed for the mountains of Colorado as they take center stage at the annual winter Dew Tour ski and snowboard competition and festival in Breckenridge, Colo. December 13-16, 2018.

After last year's Dew Tour serving as an Olympic Qualifying event, fans and athletes will see the upcoming event creatively showcase its unique and progressive competitions, including the Modified Superpipe Presented by Toyota, Slopestyle, Adaptive Banked Slalom Presented by Toyota, Streetstyle and Team Challenge events.

Public invited to hockey games in South Lake Tahoe

The Tahoe Prep Hockey Academy Varsity team has been competing across the country and they bring the action back to their home ice on Saturday at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena.

Coming off a 7-0 win over Los Gatos at the Solar4Amerian Ice in San Jose on Tuesday, the Tahoe team hosts St. Mary's Preparatory High School Rams on Saturday, November 10 at 1:00 p.m. This game is part of the team's competition in the Anaheim Ducks High School Hockey League.

South Tahoe HIgh freshman volleyball finishes year undefeated

Several South Tahoe High School fall sports teams are in the post-season and celebrating a great year of competition, and among them is the freshman girls volleyball team.

The 13 young women spent the season playing each of the nine teams in the league twice in matches from Elko to Truckee.

Coached by Ms. Megan Goldberg, who was assisted by her husband Everett, the freshman volleyball team stepped up in 18 different matches to out-serve, out-play, and out-think their opponents.

Two new electric school buses to be added to LTUSD fleet

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Does this bus look any different than your usual school bus? Well it is. The little turquoise bird above the door with the electric cord tells all. It is an all electric bus!

Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) received a grant earlier this year to purchase two electric school buses. Tuesday was the first test drive of the production vehicle and we expect a few more test drives this winter If all goes well LTUSD expects to have the two buses in service by next school year.

The 2018 Aviation Roundup at the Minden-Tahoe airport will feature the US Navy Blue Angels flying team and 11 different flying acts this weekend, October 13 and 14.

Gates for the airshow will open at 10:00 a.m. on both Saturday & Sunday, and the airshow will start around 11:30. The starting time is subject to change due to scheduling and weather, so please plan on being ready by 11:00 am.

It wraps up between 4:30 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.

There are vendors, food and merchandise available at the event.

Luke Bryan keeps Lake Tahoe audience on their feet

From before the very first note, country superstar Luke Bryan had the large crowd at Lake Tahoe Outdoor Arena on their feet Wednesday night, and they never sat down.

Bryan stopped by the South Shore as part of his "What Makes You Country Tour" July 25 on the outdoor stage at Harveys. The personable and talented entertainer engaged the audience throughout the show, highlighting birthdays and getting them to sing along.

He sang "Strip it Down," joking with the audience that it was the status of his gambling at the casinos, down, down, down.

Tahoe Beach Bash and Homebrew for Homeless this weekend

This year they are moving the event to South Lake Tahoe and combining it with a family-friendly Tahoe Beach Bash on Saturday, July 28 from noon to 4:00 p.m. at the Tahoe Beach Retreat.

Bike challenge week riders pedal 11,215 miles and save $2,493 in gas purchases

During the first two weeks of June, participants in the 13th annual Lake Tahoe Bike Challenge traveled 11,215 miles on foot or on bicycle, burning an estimated 482,245 calories and preventing an estimated 12,105 pounds of carbon dioxide emissions and $2,493 in gasoline purchases.

Organized by the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency and Lake Tahoe Bicycle Coalition, the basin-wide Bike Challenge is a friendly competition to see what individuals and teams can rack up the most trips and miles by biking, walking, or taking transit instead of driving cars.

Broadway in Blue: A Musical Revue opens July 5 at Boathouse Theater

Valhalla Tahoe is presenting Broadway in Blue starting July 5 and running two weekends. The show, a revue of contemporary and classic Broadway tunes performed by some of Lake Tahoe’s best singing and acting talent, was created by Gabriella Giocomo especially for Valhalla. Giocomo was one of three finalists in Valhalla’s WordWave One-Act play script competition in 2017. When she came for the stage reading hosted at the Boathouse Theatre she was inspired by the space and submitted the show in the winter of 2018 for review by Valhalla.

NHP to hold Tip-a-Cop fundraiser at Hard Rock to raise funds for Special Olympics

Patrons will enjoy the NHP and other public safety employees serving as volunteer waiters and waitresses as they assist the restaurant staff that day while they work for “special tips.”

Food trucks, VHRs, new interim city manager all part of SLT City Council meeting

The South Lake Tahoe City Council will take a look at vacation home rental (VHR) fines at their meeting on Tuesday, May 15. In a story that has had national attention, the $1,000 fines for violations of parking, noise and other ordinances for each the renter and homeowner have become the spotlight.

Council will look at the fines and rules for parking and bear boxes, and the fact that both renter and homeowners are fined for each instance.

2018 Valhalla Art, Music and Theatre Festival schedule announced

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The coming months at the historic Valhalla Grand Hall, Grand Lawn and Boathouse Theater will be busy with a full slate of activities planned for the 2018 Valhalla Art, Music and Theatre Festival.

The festival is Valhalla Tahoe’s flagship event, a unique celebration of music, theatre and the visual arts. The festival is set against the magnificent backdrop of Lake Tahoe and the Tallac Historic Site. Looking forward to its 34th year, it is produced by Valhalla Tahoe.

The Festival begins in mid-June with events and activities that continue throughout August.

First/second grade winners at 34th annual Kiwanis / Katey Fagan Spelling Bee

The Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe held their 34th annual Spelling Bee on Thursday, with students from the four South Lake Tahoe elementary schools taking part: Tahoe Valley, Sierra House, Bijou and Lake Tahoe Environmental Magnet.

The students from the Magnet School won first place in the 1st/2ndh grade division at the bee which is now named the Katey Fagan Spelling Bee in honor of a local Kiwanian who died in 2017.

Bijou won 3rd/4th grades and the Magnet School also won grade 5.

34th annual Kiwanis / Katey Fagan Spelling Bee in South Lake Tahoe

The Kiwanis Club of Lake Tahoe held their 34th annual Spelling Bee on Thursday, with students from the four South Lake Tahoe elementary schools taking part: Tahoe Valley, Sierra House, Bijou and Lake Tahoe Environmental Magnet.

Tahoe Valley Thunderbird Choir shines at music competition

The Tahoe Valley Thunderbird Choir recently made their first trip to the Music in the Parks Choir Festival in Fairfield, Calif. Choir director Allyssa Little wanted the student singers to experience performing under pressure in the presence of top quality competitors.

Jamie Anderson makes debut on Dancing With the Stars Monday

Jamie Anderson grew up on a snowboard at Sierra-at-Tahoe near South Lake Tahoe, and since those early days on the slopes the world has found out about how talented she is from the X Games to two Olympics. Now the country gets to see the South Lake Tahoe resident on the dance floor as the 26th season of Dancing With the Stars begins on April 30.

She will be seen on the long-running reality competition show which features an all-athlete edition this season, and it will be a much shorter season in 2018, lasting just four weeks.

Douglas County Sheriff's Explorers take top honors at competition

The Douglas County Sheriff's Explorers cam home from the Central Valley Law Enforcement Explorer Competition with 15 trophies, including the top award, 1st place overall, out-preforming the Hanford Police Department who have been the long standing first place holders.

There were 19 events at the competition which was held in Tulare, California April 6-7, 2018. The Douglas County team was up against 12 posts from the Central Valley area.

Top cycling teams heading to South Lake Tahoe for Amgen TOC

All eyes will be on South Lake Tahoe this May as top women and men cyclists from around the world race through the mountains during the annual Amgen Tour of California (TOC).

The top cycling teams from the U.S., Switzerland, Germany and Belgium are now confirmed to race the 645 miles of Amgen for men, including BMC Racing Team ,Team Sky, Bora–Hansgrohe and Team Katusha–Alpecin.

Review: Dinner theater in South Lake Tahoe a real treat

For a second year, the Rotary Club of South Lake Tahoe has brought live theater to the Lake Tahoe Golf Course. This year, a production of Divorce Southern Style hits the stage created inside the clubhouse.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I received my tickets, but I was thoroughly impressed and the night was very enjoyable with a great three-course dinner and lots of laughs.

The golf course's brand new bar was unveiled on opening night of "Divorce," so it was the centerpiece before the food and entertainment. Beautifully done with copper and wood throughout.

Potential VHR ban could stall new recreation complex in South Lake Tahoe

South Lake Tahoe voters went to the polls on November 8, 2016 and approved Measure P, a Tourist Accommodation Tax (TOT) increase of two percent to fund a new $25 million recreation complex in the city.

Now that new center is at jeopardy.

South Lake Tahoe teen up for Youth of the Year

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - If the name Mya Rossi rings a bell, you would be correct. South Tahoe Now has carried two stories on the 14-year-old, one when she became the Boys and Girls Club of Lake Tahoe Youth of the Year, and the second when she was awarded the Hank Aaron Chasing the Dream Scholarship to attend Science Camp of America: Air and Space in Hawaii.

Now Mya has made it to the Northern California Regional Finals for the Boys and Girls Club of America Youth of the Year Competition.

Carson City show dog Adele wins Best of Breed at Westminster

Adele, a Spinone Italiano show dog owned by Carson City Deputy Director of Emergency Management Stacey Belt, won best dog out of 12 in her breed Tuesday at the prestigious Westminster Dog Show in New York City.

“We are surrounded by incredibly beautiful dogs and very dedicated owners and handlers," said Belt. “The entire city is so welcoming.”

Adele is now advancing to the Sporting Group competition, which will be broadcast on Fox Sports 1 Tuesday night from 5 to 8 p.m. Pacific Time.

South Tahoe High Dance Team takes top honors

The South Tahoe High School Viking Dance Team took 1st place at the Northern Nevada Cheer & Dance Invitational on Saturday February 3, 2018. Their high energy jazz dance received a standing ovation.

“It was the best thing I have seen all day,” said an observer from a competing high school.

All 26 members of this elite dance team have a rigorous schedule of early morning practices throughout the season. In addition to their formidable practice schedule, the dancers also dedicate themselves to training in various styles of dance multiple nights throughout the week.

Last weekend for snowboarders and skiers to qualify for 2018 Winter Olympics

Just one more week of ski and snowboard competition until the 2018 U.S. Olympic teams are closer to being finalized. Focus will be south of Tahoe this week for the U.S. Grand Prix Series at Mammoth Mountain.

The results will help determine who the U.S. sends to next month's Winter Olympics in these disciplines.

Rainbow Sprinkles to reopen in South Lake Tahoe

New exhibition celebrates 1960 Winter Olympics at Squaw Valley

USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships head to Reno next week

The USA Cycling Cyclocross National Championships will be held in Reno at Rancho San Rafael Regional Park January 9-14, 2018. The park will be transformed into a course that will see the nation’s leading amateur and professional cyclocross racers. Thirty-six national titles are on the line. National champions will be crowned in junior, collegiate, U23, masters, and elite divisions.

Join El Dorado County's team in the 1 Billion Steps Challenge which tracks participant's steps through apps from January 1 to April 8, 2018.

Champions Plaza “Spirit of Competition” unveiled

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The long awaited 11 foot tall bronze sculpture "Spirit of Competition" perched on top of a 4.5 ton boulder was unveiled during a ceremony at Champions Plaza Friday.

Sculptor Gareth Curtiss transported his creation from his studio in Fortine, Montana just two days ago in the back of his van, early Thursday morning the bronze sculpture was picked up with a crane and placed on top of the boulder, bolted in and wrapped up for the ceremony.
