Local flavor added to American Idol

Wednesday night starts the 14th season for American Idol and two local women will be part of it.

South Lake Tahoe entertainer Ashley Kepler and Molly Seals, from Carson City, both tried out for the singing competition.

According to the Reno Gazette Journal, Seals tried out in Reno in July and then moved to the Kansas City auditions in August. She isn't saying whether or not she makes it to the next round so viewers will have to watch to find out.

South Lake Tahoe Olympian Maddie Bowman wins on Dew Tour

Olympic gold medalists Maddie Bowman and Jamie Anderson repeated as Dew Tour Mountain Championships winners in Breckenridge, Colo., on Friday.

Bowman, 20, won in her first ski halfpipe competition since May knee surgery. Either of her runs would have taken the trophy. She landed right and left 900s in each, scoring 88.75 and 91.25.

“I felt a different pressure [after the Olympics],” Bowman said, according to the U.S. Ski Team.

South Lake Tahoe's Sho Kashima named to 2015 US Freestyle Moguls Team

Sho Kashima of South Lake Tahoe has spent the off-season recovering from injuries and is preparing for the 2015 US Freestyle Moguls team.

The team was named this week in advance of the Dec. 13 FIS Freestyle World Cup season opener in Ruka, Finland. Kashima, who skis for Heavenly, expects to be able to join the team mid-season. According to his Facebook and Instagram pages he is working hard on rehabilitation.

Reno's David Wise wins opening freeskiing event in Colorado

COPPER MOUNTAIN, CO: Olympic Gold Medalist David Wise, who is a Lake Tahoe skier and Reno resident, is bringing home top honors after a heated early season battle that went down today at the first stop of the Sprint U.S Grand Prix tour and opening FIS Freestyle World Cup event of the season in Copper Mountain, CO. The brand new three run, best run counts format gave today’s finalist a lot of opportunity for progression, but David Wise’s consistent skiing and back-to-back double cork prowess set the stage early in the game.

Olympians to participate in Heavenly Valley's High Roller Hold'Em this spring

Three Olympic athletes from the inaugural USA slopestyle snowboarding team will arrive in South Lake Tahoe this spring to compete in Heavenly Mountain Resort’s signature event, High Roller Hold ‘Em, on Saturday, April 4, 2015. South Tahoe High Grad teaching in SF as part of teacher residency program

South Tahoe High Graduate Francisco Figueroa-Yanez, known as "Frankie" to his friends, has his new career as a school teacher in San Francisco highlighted in a recent SFGate article titled "Bay Area schools scramble for qualified teachers amid shortage." Frankie graduated from STHS in 2007, went to Santa Clara University where he majored in Biology and Spanish and is now at the University of San Francisco working on his masters degree. He visits South Lake Tahoe when time allows to see his parents and friends.

Over 1,200 people attend Sample the Sierra in South Lake Tahoe

With blue skies and warm temperatures, many people were out enjoying everything there is to do in South Lake Tahoe this holiday weekend. Many events from a carnival to fireworks were held, giving people plenty to choose from.

One of these events was the 5th Annual Sample the Sierra Farm to Fork Festival. The main event was held at Bijou Community park on Sunday, with over 1,200 people enjoying food and drink from the region. There were 16 booths of local food, wine, beer and spirits as well as an artisan marketplace, live music and a cooking contest with a mystery box of ingredients.

San Francisco Comedy Competition returns to MontBleu

sixteen contestants from around the country and Canada will give audiences and judges their best material during the San Francisco Comedy Competition event in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday, September 15.

The competition, now in its 39th year, returns to MontBleu with an outstanding group of future stand-up comedy starts picked from hundreds of applicants.

This year’s host is a past contestant himself, Kris Tinkle. Kris' new album, "Maybe I Don't Feel Like Smiling," is current in the top 10 on iTunes. He is also a regular on "The Artie Lange Show."

The second annual Boil 'n Fry Day Festival is Lake Tahoe's version of an old fashioned New Orleans crawdad feed, complete with live music at the MontBleu Outdoor Event Center, carnival games, hot wings, barbecue, cold crafted beer and all the fried, boiled or barbecued fresh water crustaceans festival goers can eat.

Lake Tahoe Attracts Top-Notch Physicians

Physicians are in high demand, but not just from patients. With an impending physician shortage and more job competition, medical administrators and recruiters will spend hours attending meetings, networking, and recruiting to hire top-notch physicians.

In a 2012 study, the Association of Staff Physician Recruiters (ASPR) estimated that physician recruitment costs between $75,000 and $90,000 per doctor. This does not include the time and effort to set up a medical practice and then to retain a physician.

2014 Gene Upshaw Scholarship awarded to Whittell High student Melissa Petty

George Whittell High School student Melissa Petty of Stateline, NV. was announced as the recipient for the sixth annual Gene Upshaw Scholarship Award at this year’s American Century Championship. Petty’s essay about her hard work in the classroom, her sports, her faith and goodwill helped secure the scholarship valued at $5,000. Petty plans to attend the University of Nevada, Reno and pursue a bachelor’s degree in science.

The Wa-Sha-Shu It’Deh Native American Festival returns to Valhalla at the Tallac Historic site this weekend, July 26 and 27. The festival celebrates the Washoe's ancient lifeways and their Lake Tahoe homeland.

The festival features traditional American Indian dancers and drum performers, basket weaving displays, art, and great food. The basket weaving competition features over fourteen different categories. The Washoe are highly regarded for their master craftsmanship of baskets and have had several well-known weavers throughout their history, including Dat So La Lee.

Mark Rypien wins closest to the hole contest; Winnings go to Tahoe Fund

On July 18th 15 of some of the world’s most legendary athletes and entertainers competed in Lake Tahoe for the Korbel Closest-to-the-Pin Challenge as part of the American Century Championship, currently being played at the Edgewood Golf Course. NFL Former Pro Bowl Quarterback Mark Rypien who was the inaugural tournament champion took home the title after teeing off from Hole 17 and placing his ball just seven feet away from the pin winning a $5,000 donation for The Tahoe Fund from the Korbel Toast Life® Foundation.

Autographed golf bags to be auctioned during Celebrity Golf Week for charity

Celebrities competing in the 25th American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe next week will be autographing golf bags for charity. Vessel and the ACC have teamed up to raise money by auctioning off the bags through online and text bidding.

Annika Sorenstam Warms up at Edgewood Wednesday; Celebrities on Their Way To Tahoe

"The course is in great shape and it's a beautiful day in Lake Tahoe," Annika Sorenstam said as she took time out from her round of golf at Edgewood Tahoe Wednesday to speak to the media. She is preparing for next week's 25th American Century Championship where she'll compete against other professional athletes and entertainers.

Sorenstam, who has a 2nd home in Lake Tahoe and spends three to four months a year there, said she's been a spectator on hole 17th during the past celebrity tournaments and is looking forward to being a competitor this year.

Tahoe Bike Challenge Celebration

People got out of their cars and onto their bikes as part of the Tahoe Bike Challenge over the last two weeks. From June 7th through the 20th, teams and individuals racked up miles, saved money, kept CO2 out of the air, burned calories and had fun.

There will be a cycle celebration on Wednesday, June 25 at the Heavenly Village near the gondola from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to celebrate the challenge. The band Sierra Drifters will entertain the crowd as awards and prizes are handed out. A bike valet will be on site so everyone can ride in and continue what they started.

El Dorado County Fair Opens in Placerville

It's that time of year again. The county fair, full of funnel cakes, carnival rides, animals, music, exhibits, wheelbarrow races, wine and beer competition and good old fashioned fun.

The El Dorado County Fair opened on Thursday and runs through Sunday, Father's Day at the fairgrounds in Placerville. The theme this year is "Photos, Fathers and Fairs."

The County Sheriff's Office invites community members to stop by their booth and see the brand new state of art patrol vehicles. They'll have a new SUV and sedan on display so people can see inside and check out their new features.

Nevada Highway Patrol to Take Part in "Tip a Cop" Day at Lake Tahoe's Hard Rock Cafe

Several Troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol, as well as other employees for the Department of Public Safety, will be volunteering their time to raise money for Special Olympics Nevada and California on Saturday, June 14, 2014 in the Hard Rock Café in Stateline between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. and between 5 p.m and 9 p.m.

The NHP and DPS will be assisting the wait staff as they serve patrons in order to earn "special tips."

LPGA Great Annika Sorenstam Will Play in South Lake Tahoe's Celebrity Golf Tournament

The competitive landscape of the American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe will dramatically alter in 2014 with the addition of LPGA great Annika Sorenstam.

The legendary golf superstar, winner of 89 international tournaments and over $22 million, is among the most successful players in history. A part-time resident of Lake Tahoe and mother of two, Sorenstam will play on even terms with pro athletes in the nationally televised, 54-hole, $600,000 competition at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course.

School Board Has Two Part - Day Long Meeting Tuesday

The LTUSD Board gets out of the board room and into the schools Tuesday as they have their Annual Student Lunch meeting. They will have lunch with about 20 selected students at South Tahoe High in the new Student Union. The students are a cross section of seniors who will be sharing their thoughts with the board.

Military Set to Receive Free Tickets to American Century Celebrity Golf

All active duty, reservists, National Guard and veterans will receive complimentary tickets to the 25th Annual American Celebrity Golf Championship in South Lake Tahoe July 15-20.

The free tickets are being offered in appreciation of their service to the country.

For the sixth consecutive year, South Tahoe High School students have won honors in the California Fourth District Congressional Art Competition.

STHS student Meghan Bryd won the competition this year with her photograph in honor of a holocaust survivor.

South Lake Tahoe Celebration, Parade and Party Being Held For Its Three Olympians

Updated Lake Tahoe Olympic Medal Count

The medals won by Lake Tahoe athletes grew by one on Thursday, bringing the total to 4. The three gold medals were won by Maddie Bowman, Jamie Anderson and David Wise. Julia Mancuso won bronze.

There are three days left of competition in the 2014 Olympics in Sochi. The closing ceremonies will air on NBC Sunday night from 8:30 pm to 10:30 pm.

Soccer Coaches Hired for Lake Tahoe Community College

Benjamin Wade and Christian DeLeon were hired as the new LTCC soccer coaches at Tuesday night's Lake Tahoe Community College Board meeting. Both coaches will head up the newly established intercollegiate soccer program at the college. Wade will be the men's head coach and DeLeon the women's.

South Lake Tahoe Casinos Win in September

Casinos on the south shore of Lake Tahoe won $22,188,166 in the month of September, 2013, up 23.19% over the same period in 2012. This brings the win since July 1 to $75,985,370 according to the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

Overall, the state of Nevada gained 7.41% over the previous year, bringing their September win to $958,805,870. The Carson Valley and Carson City casinos won $8,455,170 which is was a loss of just over 4% from 2012.

Fifty canine (K9) teams are expected at this year's South Lake Tahoe Police Canine Association's annual K9 trials on October 5.

This K9 Trial will determine the top K9 Teams for the year. This fun event is open to the public and starts around 8:00 AM at the Babe Ruth Baseball fields at 1090 Lyons Avenue. The rest of the events will take place at various locations around the city.
