In honor of Peace Officer Memorial Week, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department honored officers, dispatch and citizens during its Annual Awards Ceremony on Wednesday, May 15, 2013.

“We are so proud of the selfless efforts by our police force on a daily basis and it’s nice to have an opportunity to support them in this way” said City of South Lake Tahoe Mayor Tom Davis. “These are all local heroes in our police and fire departments and its good we take the time to honor them.”

The governors of California and Nevada have agreed to renew a bi-state partnership to preserve, protect and enhance Lake Tahoe through the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency Compact.

Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval and Calif. Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr. announced Tuesday an agreement that renews the partnership, which has been under threat of repeal.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit will host the third annual Native Species Festival on Sunday, June 9, 2013. UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center will host the eighth-annual Science Expo, together with Tahoe Expedition Academy, other community partners, and with sponsorship from the Rotary Club of Tahoe-Incline.

The Science Expo is open to the general public on the evening of Wednesday, March 20 from 4 – 6 p.m. for children of all ages together with their families at the Tahoe Center for Environmental Sciences in Incline Village. Ice cream will be provided by Susie Scoops of Incline Village. Admission is free.

The Tahoe Fund, an environmental non-profit raising funds for environmental improvement projects in the Tahoe Basin, today announced it has received an “Every Day Capacity Building Grant” from the National Environmental Education Foundation.

The grant program is made possible through the generous support of Toyota Motor Sales USA, Inc. This grant will provide resources to help the Tahoe Fund expand its online fundraising capacity and donor management capabilities. The Tahoe Fund was one of 29 grantees selected from a competitive pool of 160 applicants. The grant is for $5,000.

Brooke Laine was appointed to the South Lake Tahoe City Council on Tuesday to fill the seat vacated by former Mayor Claire Fortier.
The appointment was made during a special session of the South Lake Tahoe City Council. Laine will be sworn in Feb. 5 and will serve through December 2014. Nine had applied for the job.

The South Lake Tahoe City Council made appointments to various Boards and Commissions for 2013 at Tuesday's meeting. Mayor Tom Davis will serve on the following boards: California Tahoe Conservancy, City Selection Committee, TahoeChamber.org, Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority, and South Tahoe Chamber of Commerce.

A meteorite that exploded as a fireball over California’s Sierra Nevada foothills April 22 and heard throughout the Lake Tahoe Basin was among the fastest, rarest meteorites known to have hit the Earth, and it traveled a highly eccentric orbital route to get here.

An international team of scientists presents these and other findings in a study published Friday, Dec. 21, in the journal Science. The 70-member team included nine researchers from UC Davis, along with scientists from the SETI Institute, NASA and other institutions.

The City South Lake Tahoe is pleased to announce that two councilmembers were sworn in and a new Mayor was voted in during today’s City Council meeting.

Hal Cole retained his City Council seat during the November 6th election and joining him is newly elected councilmember, JoAnn Conner. Both Cole and Conner will hold their seats in City Council through November 2016.

The newly seated Council voted by unanimous decision to elect Councilmembers Tom Davis as Mayor and Hal Cole as Mayor Pro Tem to serve a one year term in 2013.

The First “Light up South Lake Tahoe” event took place over Thanksgiving weekend with multiple businesses along Highway 50 participating by decorating their store fronts and turning on their lights as the South Lake Tahoe Fire Departments fire truck and Streets Department snow plow led the procession from Stateline to the “Y.”

“We are very pleased with the turnout of tonight’s event with at least 150 people coming out to watch the tree lighting and we look forward to next year’s event being even bigger and better,” said Mayor Pro Tem Tom Davis.

Mayor Claire Fortier, Mayor Pro Tem Tom Davis, Councilmember’s Angela Swanson and Bruce Grego, Councilmember elect JoAnn Conner, and City Manager Nancy Kerry were all in attendance for the ceremony.
