Mt. Tallac students learn how important their voice is
Submitted by paula on Wed, 03/14/2018 - 6:56pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - While many students across the country hit the streets on National Student Walkout Day, Mt. Tallac students were in the classroom focusing how they can be the future change makers.
Students America Rojas, 17, and Kai Heiden, 17, created a slide show for their classmates and staff. There were 19 slides, representing the 17 students who lost their lives one month ago in Parkland, Florida, along with the copy of a poem written by one of the victims (seen at the end of this story).

Squaw Valley - Body of missing boarder found, avalanche injures 5
Submitted by paula on Fri, 03/02/2018 - 7:16pmA snowboarder missing since yesterday afternoon was found deceased at Squaw Valley Ski Resort on Friday. Rocklin resident Wenyu Zhang, 42-years-old, was found deceased this morning by Squaw Valley Ski Patrol. A search area was narrowed through the use of a tracker program used by the resort.
Dean Eastin July 15, 1959 ~ Feb. 11, 2018
Submitted by paula on Mon, 02/26/2018 - 4:26pmDean Eastin, a South Lake Tahoe resident, passed away at home on Sunday, Feb. 11, 2018.
He was born on July 15, 1959 in Santa Rosa, Calif. to Ruth and Jerry Eastin. The family moved to Lake Tahoe when Dean was 4. He attended Saint Theresa's Catholic School and South Tahoe High School.
He was co-owner of South Side Auto Body for many years, and then after it sold he worked at Welcome's Autobody until his health failed. Dean was active in the "Hi-Lows" 4x4 club for many years and enjoyed camping, four-wheeling and working on street rods with his ex-father-in-law.
Body found in South Lake Tahoe; Police investigating
Submitted by paula on Sun, 02/25/2018 - 10:54am6:00 p.m. 2/26/18: The man who was found dead on the side of Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe has been identified as local resident Douglas Knapp.
The El Dorado County coroner's office said they will be doing an autopsy and at this time they do not have a cause of death for the 55-year-old man.
There is no indication of foul play or that Knapp was hit by a vehicle, according to South Lake Tahoe Police.

Rudolph "Rudy" Pakes, Sr. June 4, 1926 ~ February 14, 2018
Submitted by paula on Tue, 02/20/2018 - 6:07pmRudolph M. Pakes Sr, 91, passed away peacefully and with grace in his home on February 14, 2018 his family by his side.
Rudy was born on June 4, 1926 in Belle Valley, Ohio. His parents Andrew Pakes and Susan Krempasky immigrated from what was then Czechoslovakia for the promise of the “American Dream.” They met and married in Belle Valley, where Andrew worked in the coalmines. Rudy had 5 brothers and 3 sisters. He had a wonderful childhood in Ohio, all of his siblings attended K-12 in a one-room schoolhouse.

Tahoma murder suspect identified

Jeremy David Virgo, 47, was arrested for murder after a chase ensued after deputies from El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) responded to shots being fired in the area of Timber Wolf Drive and Alder Street in the West Shore community of Tahoma.

LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. A chase along State Route 89 between Tahoma and Homewood today resulted in the arrest of a man who is being accused of being involved in a shooting and suspicious death.
Fatal fire in South Lake Tahoe

His former sister-in-law Mimi Bertrand told South Tahoe Now that it was Dean who died. His two adult children, Lori and Gregory, moved from South Lake Tahoe and now live in Grants Pass, Oregon.

8:00 p.m. update: The cause of the deadly fire in South Lake Tahoe today was the result of smoking materials on a couch. The deceased is a 58-year-old male. There is an ongoing investigation by the South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue and Police departments. No name has been released.

We want to bring the experiences of our local community into the light.

Two Douglas County businesses cited for selling liquor to minors

The following 25 businesses were checked and they successfully passed the alcohol compliance check and did not sell alcohol to a minor.
Truckee rock climber falls to his death overnight
Submitted by paula on Thu, 02/08/2018 - 4:14pmA Truckee man died after falling more than 100 feet down a cliff Wednesday night, Placer County sheriff's officials said.
The Placer Search and Rescue and Nordic teams responded when they received a call of a fallen hiker at 10:00 p.m. near Squaw Valley.
The unidentified man was with two friends in the area of Big Chief, just east of Highway 89 and Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows Ski Resort. The men, in their 20s and 30s, did some rock climbing during daylight hours and then went to hike to the top of Big Chief after dark with their headlamps on.

Man arrested after man found deceased in Incline Village
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/24/2018 - 8:10pm1/25/18 update: Ismael Resendiz-Moreno has now been charged with murder of an unidentified man in Incline Village.
At approximately 10:00 a.m. on January 23, 2018, Sheriff’s Office dispatch received a 911 call from a residence on the 700 block of Southwood Boulevard reporting an injured person inside the residence. When deputies arrived on scene, they were able to secure the residence, locate the victim, and call for medical assistance. The victim was declared deceased at the scene.
The victim’s identify is pending confirmation by the Washoe County Medical Examiner’s Office.

Man dies after altercation at Heavenly Village
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/17/2018 - 5:39pmA man whose actions lead to his being detained by security at Heavenly Village in South Lake Tahoe on New Year's Eve has died.
The 46-year-old transient was acting erratic and causing a disturbance near the fountain on December 31, according to South Lake Tahoe Police Lt. Shannon Laney. Security detained the man and when police officers arrived they recognized he was in medical distress and immediately started life-saving measures.

Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/03/2018 - 2:27pmThe Nevada Departments of Transportation and Public Safety are reminding Nevadans to share the road after Nevada pedestrian traffic deaths rose in 2017 amid a decline in overall statewide traffic deaths.
In 2017, Douglas County had a rise in all deaths on the road: Fatal crashes up from 5 to 9, fatalities up from 5 to 11, alcohol fatal crashes up from 1 to 2, and number of fatalities in those crashes up from 1 to 3.

The predominately under-30 crowd come from colleges and communities hundreds and even thousands of miles away to enjoy a specially gathered group of top artists in the electronic dance music (EDM) field.
Along with the fun though comes issues common at most music festivals: noise, trash, underage drinking and drugs.
Deadly holiday in Las Vegas: Two casino security guards shot to death

The killings at Arizona Charlie’s Decatur marked the fourth double homicide and the fifth multiple homicide investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department this month.
Since Dec. 22 alone, Metro has investigated 12 homicides, all but one resulting from gun violence. But over the same stretch, the valley has had 15 homicides, including the deaths of three people inside a North Las Vegas home Thursday.
What's killing Nevadans? The top 10 causes of death in the Silver State
Submitted by paula on Wed, 12/27/2017 - 10:08pmLike Americans nationwide, Nevadans were more likely to die from heart disease or cancer in 2016 than other causes.
But one cause of death in the Silver State stands out compared with national trends: suicide. The number of suicides increased by 13 percent from 2015 to 2016, according to data provided by the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health.
It's a trend Washoe County's chief medical examiner and coroner, Dr. Laura Knight, has noticed locally.

Bay Area toddler dies after being found in casino hot tub

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office has announced that a four-year-old from Redwood City, California has died on the South Shore.
At 1:27 p.m. Sunday, December 17, emergency personnel were called to MontBleu Casino and Resort in Stateline, Nevada after the toddler was found in a hot tub. He was transported by the Tahoe Douglas Fire Department to Barton Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced deceased.
The next of kin has been notified.

Snowboarder identified in Thursday's accident at a Lake Tahoe resort
Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/11/2017 - 1:06pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The El Dorado County Sheriff's Office (EDSO) has identified David Karlin of Orangevale, California as the man who died after a snowboarding accident at Sierra-at-Tahoe Thursday.
The 23-year-old man fell at approximately 1:15 p.m. December 7 as he was snowboarding and slid at a high rate of speed down the Lower Snowshoe run and into a fence near its intersection with the Sugar N' Spice run. Sierra-at-Tahoe ski patrol called for paramedics and air support.

Tahoe Douglas Fire offers free ash cans to prevent fires
Submitted by paula on Mon, 12/04/2017 - 8:17pmTwo Kingsbury Grade area residences sustained major damage recently due to the incorrect disposal of hot ashes in the back yard of one of homes.
A 2014 fire in the northern end of Washoe Valley Drive Fire destroyed 29 homes, charred 3,177 acres and caused the death of an elderly woman after a man improperly discarded hot fireplace ashes.

Whether he “had to catch a plane” in order to speed up dinner or exaggerated his age by 10 years, he was always one for a smile and a laugh. All of us would describe him as the best husband, father, grandpa and great grandpa we could ask for. Everytime you asked how he was doing, he simply responded with “fantastic.” Which was a perfect reflection of his positive and uplifting personality.

Every year families travel to South Lake Tahoe for Thanksgiving and Christmas, leading to congested roadways and an increase in pedestrian traffic. Many of these travelers are foreign to winter weather and do not have much experience driving in icy conditions. The South Lake Tahoe Police Department reminds motorists to be alert and courteous so that everyone can arrive at their destination and enjoy the holiday season with their friends and loved ones.
Doctor sentenced to 10 years in prison for part in Reno pill mill
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/20/2017 - 7:23pmDr. Robert Rand, whose pain pill prescribing practices led to the death of at least one patient and helped fuel a rampant pill mill run out of the Jones West Ford dealership, was sentenced to 10 years in federal prison on Monday.
In handing down the sentence, Judge Miranda Du said doctors like Rand, who show ignorance and a reckless disregard for life, are fueling addiction and illegal distribution of pain pills.
"Doctors like Dr. Rand...are enablers and contribute to the opioid crisis in this community," Du said.

The El Dorado County Sheriff's Search and Rescue (SAR) team has been busy this fall, responding to almost double the number of calls.
From September 1 to October 30, 2016, the SAR volunteers responded to 12 incidents. So far in 2017 during the period, they are been called out 22 times.
Man accused of threatening Carson City judge dies in prison
Submitted by paula on Thu, 10/26/2017 - 5:05pmThe man accused of firing shots into the home of Carson City Judge John Tatro, setting up an explosive device outside the home and sending a threatening Christmas card has died, Carson City law officials confirm.
John Aston, 74, died Thursday morning, 6:25 a.m. in the infirmary at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center. News of his death has been confirmed by the Carson City Sheriff's Office.
The Carson City Sheriff’s Office Coroner responded. An autopsy will be scheduled per NRS 209.3815. Next of kin have been notified.

Stretch of highway renamed for fallen South Lake Tahoe firefighter
Submitted by paula on Sat, 10/14/2017 - 6:31pmThe Michael “Mikey” Hallenbeck Memorial Highway was dedicated Saturday during a ceremony on Echo Summit near South Lake Tahoe.
The stretch of Highway 50 from Mt. Ralston Road to Echo Summit now has signage at each end commemorating the fallen fire fighter who worked winters at Sierra-at-Tahoe.
