After years of planing and months of public input, the new Airport Master Plan for South Lake Tahoe was presented to the community on Tuesday. About a dozen people attended to see and hear what the final plan might look like.

Since buying the Tahoe Valley Airport from El Dorado County in 1983 for $1, the City of South Lake Tahoe has been supporting its operation which at one time saw almost 300,000 people a year pass through.

California cannabis growers may be making millions, but their thirsty plants are sucking up a priceless resource: water. Now scientists say that if no action is taken in the drought-wracked state, the consequences for fisheries and wildlife will be dire.

"If this activity continues on the trajectory it's on, we're looking at potentially streams going dry, streams that harbor endangered fish species like salmon, steelhead," said Scott Bauer of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife.

TPC is the only basin-­wide organization focused on our regional economy to improve
the quality of life for Tahoe residents.

The new website includes current project information, the Connected Tahoe internet speed test, and their investment campaign information.

Biking and walking positively contribute to Lake Tahoe's economy, but by how much? This subject will be discussed during May's Tahoe Talks Brown Bag speaker series on May 20, 2015. This will feature a panel discussion on what is currently known about how biking and walking impact Tahoe's economy, and how we can find out more.

City Hall has tapped an official from the Lake Tahoe region to helm the municipal government's transportation planning efforts, selecting someone from one of Park City's mountain resort competitors for the position.

Alfred Knotts will leave the Tahoe Transportation District to become the transportation planning manager in Park City. He will succeed the retiring Kent Cashel. City Hall announced the hiring in a prepared statement.

Climate experts are discussing what we can do for the future in the drought. A forum on Wednesday afternoon summarized the climate conditions for the entire Great Basin, and how they affect resources like agriculture and wildlife.

These forums are important because experts say climate not only has a big impact on our region, but experts say it also affects our economy.

There are many sides to the South Lake Tahoe Vacation Home Rental (VHR) situation. On one side are the locals whose peaceful lives have been disturbed because they are the neighbors of vacation home rentals that are reportedly out of control with excess noise and trash that come from inconsiderate renters. On another side are the people wanting to enjoy South Lake Tahoe from the comfort of a private home. Yet another side are the second home owners who want to earn money from their vacation home.

An overflowing audience of South Lake Tahoe residents, home owners, vacation home owners, real estate agents, property managers, vacation rental companies, locals and city officials were on hand Tuesday night at the Vacation Home Rental (VHR) community workshop held in City Council chambers at the airport.

City Manager Nancy Kerry ran the meeting, giving everyone a chance to speak their opinion after a short presentation.

A Tahoe Talks Brown Bag Lunch Series recently launched offers a monthly forum for people to discuss and learn more about ways to strengthen communities, make towns safer for bicyclists and pedestrians, and help protect Lake Tahoe’s amazing natural resources.

Lunches are held monthly at Lake Tahoe Community College. They cover topics ranging from transportation to the economy and the environment, and offer a comfortable, low-key setting for people to discuss and learn about those issues. The events are free to the public.

"We have good news for the second year in a row," City Manager Nancy Kerry started with during her presentation Tuesday to the South Lake Tahoe City Council.

The budget for fiscal year 2013-14 closed out with a positive cash flow of $910,000. Kerry reported that a conservative fiscal philosophy and being budget conscious got the City through the recession. They have maintained a 25% reserve in the budget since 2005, a move that has allowed the City to be in the position to now grow the economy.

Legal marijuana was a $700 million dollar industry in Colorado last year, according to a Washington Post analysis of recently-released tax data from the state's Department of Revenue. In 2014, Colorado retailers sold $386 million of medical marijuana and $313 million for purely recreational purposes. The two segments of the market generated $63 million in tax revenue, with an additional $13 million collected in licenses and fees.

The following is a summary of accomplishments during 2014 by the City of South Lake Tahoe.

The most important issue facing cities and local agencies is continued steadfast attention to the budget, both short term and long term fiscal impacts.

· Implemented “budget watch” approach to financial analysis; a year-long effort evaluating state, national and global economic impacts for South Shore economy, and capital investment opportunities

For his "State of the City" address, South Lake Tahoe Mayor Hal Cole took everyone on a trip through the city, celebrating the successes of the last year and creating an anticipation for a future seen with new investments, an improved economy, more businesses and a community that will continue to thrive.

As supervisor of Lake Valley’s wildfire prevention program for almost 10 years, I have witnessed a great change in our community’s awareness and understanding of our biggest hazard. However, I can honestly say that we have so much more work to do. For less than $10 a month, you can both safeguard our community and move our economy forward. Wildfire prevention is cheaper than suppression. Residents will continue to receive free curbside chipping. Local tree and roofing contractors will continue to benefit through rebates.

The campaign posters on Measures M, N and O that have plastered the west slope for a few months have now made their way to South Lake Tahoe. But, what are they all about?

Growth, to put it in one word.

On one side you have people who want to have control of growth in the county and not let it go to Sacramento. On the other side there is a grass roots movement to keep all growth out of the county unless Cal Trans says its okay.

It was discovered that a South Lake Tahoe homeowner had been renting out his vacation home since at least 2008 without paying transient occupancy tax (TOT). An audit of the City's Vacation Home Rental program discovered the violation, and when the homeowner refused to comply so a criminal investigation was conducted.
