Lake Tahoe Community College’s Board of Trustees announced Tuesday that Jeff DeFranco, the current director of communications and facilities at Springfield Public Schools in Oregon, will be the college’s next vice president of administrative services.

DeFranco holds a master’s in educational leadership with an emphasis in higher education administration from the University of Oregon. He earned his undergraduate degree from California State University, Chico.

A local South Lake Tahoe neighborhood will soon have something to cheer about because on Monday, April 30 from 5:30pm to 6 pm Edgewood Companies will join City officials, families, neighbors and community members at a celebratory groundbreaking ceremony. The groundbreaking will mark the start of construction on Bonanza Park, located at 1209 Bonanza Street.

The Sierra Nevada Alliance is hosting the 7th Annual Wild & Scenic Film Festival at the MontBleu Showroom on Saturday, March 6 at 7:00PM. On Feb. 29 the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit ruled that the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) acted illegally in not analyzing the boat pollution impacts for over one thousand illegal boat mooring buoys in the lake and that it must do so before it can approve other lake development.

The appeals court upheld a lower court ruling that found proposed amendments to the shoreline development plan were invalid. Under the new ruling, TRPA will retain discretion in how it will conduct a new study of the impacts of legalizing these buoys.

The non-profit Tahoe Fund is working with public and nonprofit agencies basinwide to develop its funding priorities for the next year. The Fund has a 10-year goal of raising and distributing $50 million to restore andenhance the Lake, including work on Nevada and California bike paths, hiking trails, restoration projects, interpretive programs, public parks and related projects. Founded in 2010, the Tahoe Fund raises private money to leverage the limited public funding available for such efforts.

Population pressures can certainly be better managed everywhere to preserve our environment and wildlife. But reaching out to such unpopulated areas as the Arctic definitely needs to be a priority ...

The Tahoe Regional Planning Agency will conduct travel surveys with visitors and residents at several recreational and commercial locations throughout the Basin beginning this Friday, February 24. The interviewing, to be carried out by a professional survey research company, is scheduled to take place through Sunday, March 4. Surveyors will wear badges while patrolling survey sites. Results from the Travel Mode Survey will be used to track the success of and help plan multi-modal travel options around Lake Tahoe.

Tahoe Regional Planning Agency employee Jeff Cowen was honored as the recipient of the North Lake Tahoe Chamber and Resort Association’s Employee of the Year Award for his outstanding work as TRPA’s Community Liaison.
“I was shocked and truly honored to receive this recognition,” Cowen said about the award. “I am lucky in my job because I get to inform the community about all the great work being done by TRPA staff. I know I share this award with them,” he said.

The City of South Lake Tahoe and the League to Save Lake Tahoe (League) have entered into a Settlement Agreement in which the League agrees to drop its appeal of their lawsuit against the City regarding the General Plan Update (GPU) and the City agrees not to seek payment for legal fees.

The snow forecast to hit the Lake Tahoe region during the next few days is expected to give the Tahoe Fund's Plate for Powder program a boost along with Sierra ski resorts and businesses. Drivers who purchase a California or Nevada Tahoe vehicle license plate will receive two free ski lift or Nordic tickets to the resort of their choice. New Tahoe plates cost $50 in California and $61 in Nevada.

Located where Highway 50 meets Lake Tahoe, the Lakeview Commons Project is expected to become a showcase of collaboration, innovation and sustainable practices that will significantly improve erosion control and thus, lake clarity. The project will also improve the visual appearance of the surrounding built environment and provide visitors and residents with a world-class open space and civic gathering place. The project will be the centerpiece of the community's efforts to develop a sustainable and vibrant environment and economy.

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) has approved a project that will reduce wildfire risk to communities on Lake Tahoe's South Shore and restore the health of the area's forests. The South Shore Fuel Reduction and Healthy Forest Restoration Project will thin trees and brush on more than 10,000 acres of national forest system land from the Nevada state line to Cascade Lake.
