The WNC Fall 2020 Dean’s List includes 408 students, accounting for 34.7 percent of the college’s full-time students.
To earn the distinction of making WNC’s Dean’s List, students must complete at least 12 units during the semester and accumulate a grade point average of 3.50 or higher.

The club, serving the community since 1959, has given out over one-million dollars to local graduates over the years.
Local students among 650 graduates of Western Nevada College
Submitted by paula on Tue, 05/19/2020 - 7:19pmAlthough Western Nevada College has delayed its commencement ceremony to honor its 2020 graduation class because of COVID-19, the college is proud to announce and congratulate its list of graduates.
Following the spring semester 2020, 650 students have graduated with 692 degrees and certificates. Eighteen of those were given to residents around Lake Tahoe.

Tahoe Film Festival returns to the North Shore

Several filmmakers introduce their works. The event is a fantastic opportunity to enjoy almost thirty films and interact with other film aficionados.
All proceeds from the festival, which runs on the North Shore from December 5-8, go to support educational programs at the UC Davis Tahoe Environmental Research Center.

Women's Soccer Team at LTCC ranked #1 in national coach's poll
Submitted by paula on Fri, 09/27/2019 - 4:59pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - In 2018 the Lake Tahoe Community College's Women's Soccer team made an impression on coaches around the country and they became the #2 ranked Division III team during the season. Their epic season took them to the state finals.
Fast forward to this year and the 2019 Lady Coyotes made it to the number one on the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 NJCAA poll for Division III this week. Fresno City College is currently in the second spot, a team they tied during a September 20 match-up, 1-1.

Local youth are staring in all of your favorite roles in the musical, The Little Mermaid Jr. It is based on the animated 1989 Disney film and classic Hans Christian Anderson story of the same name about a mermaid who dreams of the world above the sea and gives up her voice to find love.

Kelly Jay Arnold, 56, of South Lake Tahoe, California died from a brain abscess on April 1, 2019, in Reno, Nevada.
Kelly was born in Greeley, Colorado on March 24, 1963 to Gerald and Dorothy (Bartlett) Arnold. Growing up he was active in Boy Scouts and attended John Evans and Greeley Central High School.

Level III Trauma Center surgeon, Kimberly Evans, MD, FACS and Barton’s Trauma Program Manager, Cate Neal, RN joined South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue Captain Kim George in presenting "Stop the Bleed," a programs created by the Department of Homeland Security and American College of Surgeons to teach lay people how to care for trauma victims.

2018 was a storied and undefeated regular season for the Lake Tahoe Community College women's soccer team. It was a year of many firsts.
The Coyotes were ranked number two at one point according to the United Soccer Coaches Junior College Division III women’s soccer national poll. They find out today when the next national poll results are released where they ended up nationally for the season.
Young Frankenstein heads into final weekend at South Tahoe High

Now Young Frankenstein returns to the South Tahoe stage for a six-day run in their TADA Theater. Opening night was a sellout with two more days of full crowds, and they continue the production November 9-11.

Evans Fire burning in southwest Reno
Submitted by paula on Sun, 07/01/2018 - 6:01pmSmoke could be seen over the mountains above Incline Village Sunday as the Evans Fire burned in southwest Reno. The fire started July 1 around 8:00 a.m. on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest’s Carson Ranger District in Evans Canyon near the Mount Rose Wilderness area.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
So far, 60 acres of extremely dense vegetation and timber have burned and it is five percent contained. Both ground and air resources are on scene and more have been ordered. Hikers in the area have been evacuated.

Two women thankful after being rescued from side of mountain
Submitted by paula on Tue, 08/15/2017 - 5:27pmSOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Three friends from the Sacramento area spent Sunday morning hiking in Desolation Wilderness along the Lyons Creek Trail with a goal of getting to Lake Sylvia, then Pyramid Peak.
They got to Lake Sylvia along a well marked trail, but were getting tired and decided to look for a shortcut to Pyramid Peak.
"We were going to hike the ridge and do a gradual decent," said one of the hikers, Sarah Pollo, 33. "We were pretty tired and looked for a short cut."
"It seemed like a good idea at the time," she said. "But it was a miscalculation."

After watching the 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee on opening weekend, we highly recommend this fun musical though not appropriate for those under 13). It is a Tony Award-winning musical comedy and even though far from Broadway, the local Lake Tahoe cast made it very entertaining.
Firefighters from South Lake Tahoe head to New Mexico and Arizona fires
Submitted by paula on Thu, 06/15/2017 - 6:28pmTwo local firefighters will be joining almost 600 California-based U.S. Forest Service wildland firefighters and support personnel as they head to Arizona and New Mexico to fight massive fires.
In Arizona, almost 40,000 acres have burned in over ten fires; In New Mexico 13,000 acres have burned this week, over 30,000 acres last week.
The personnel that are part of this mobilization come from all 18 national forests in California (Pacific Southwest Region).

Hospitals nationwide are assigned an A, B, C, D or F letter grade. Barton Memorial Hospital was one of 823 hospitals to receive an “A” for its commitment to reducing errors, infections, and accidents. This is the third consecutive “A” Barton Hospital has received.

Eight South Tahoe High students commit to play soccer for LTCC

"I think we will finally be there," Evans said of a team that is primed for post-season play. Not only did he recruit the six young ladies from STHS, he also is adding a Truckee player, one from Reno, a Las Vegas player who was on state championship team for four years and has 14 returnees from his 2016 team.
Washoe County teen arrested for making numerous 911 calls

Between November 12, 2016 and November 29, 2016, the Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center received calls from the Sun Valley area, including reports of mass murder, shoot-outs in the street, and a bomb threat to a local elementary school.

Olympia Circle.
The groups weeded, did path rehabilitation, sheet mulching and re-planting.

South Lake Tahoe bank robbed Friday; second South Shore bank robbery in three days
Submitted by paula on Fri, 07/01/2016 - 2:04pm8:30 p.m. update 7/1/16: The investigation of Friday's bank robbery at the Al Tahoe branch of El Dorado Savings led to the identification of Gabriel Antonio Evans, 36, of South Lake Tahoe as the suspect.
Detectives secured an arrest warrant for Evans and a search warrant for his residence in the 3000 block of Riverside Avenue. Due to Evan’s past violent criminal history, the SWAT team was employed to make the arrest. Officers, assisted by the FBI, arrested Evans at his residence at 7:45 p.m. this evening.
Tahoe Prospertiy Center awarded for collaborative efforts

Certificates of recognition were also presented to the Tahoe Prosperity Center from Assemblywoman Beth Gaines, Senators Ted Gaines and Jim Nelson, and Congressma=en Tom McClintock and Douglas LaMalfa.
South Tahoe High soccer stars to play for LTCC Coyotes

Natalie Reber, Stacy Vazquez, Alejandra Gutierrez and Kenya Maltese will all be in blue jerseys this fall as they hit the field under the direction of Coach Jeremy Evans.
"This is a big deal for my school," said Evans. "This is my first recruiting class and I can't wait to you to the next level," he told the recruits.

Bodies will be dropping like flies as mystery, chaos, and laughter prevail during The Musical Comedy Murders of 1940, a Hollywood murder mystery being performed by by the Theatre Arts Department at Lake Tahoe Community College.
The play, written by John Bishop and directed by Susan Boulanger, will be at the school's Duke Theater March 11, 12, 17, 18, 19 at 7:30 p.m., with Sunday matinees on March 13 and 20 at 2 p.m.
DCSO Explorer Scouts volunteer at Pebble Beach golf tournament
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/24/2016 - 7:56pmThe Douglas County Sheriff’s Explorers just finished a week-long detail in Pebble Beach, California working the AT & T Pebble Beach Pro-Am Golf Tournament to earn money for their POST.
Thirteen DCSO Explorers handled pedestrian control, traffic control and security details in and around the famous 17 mile drive in Pebble Beach. They saw golf professionals like Phil Mickelson and Vijay Singh as well as amateurs like Justin Timberlake, Mark Wahlberg, Carson Daly and Larry The Cable Guy.

On the guest list were families from both Live Violence Free and Sierra Child and Family Services. Thirty families and 80 children enjoyed an afternoon of food, entertainment, a visit from Santa and gifts.

Submitted by paula on Thu, 12/10/2015 - 12:21amWhen Nick Arbelaez moved to South Lake Tahoe with his fiancee Stephanie Shamo, he was taking the Assistant Soccer Coach position at LTCC and she was headed to Barton Health.
After Head Coach Ben Wade and LTCC parted ways mid-season, Arbelaez stepped in as interim head coach, leading the Coyotes to the final four for California Community Colleges.
At Tuesday's board meeting, Arbelaez was introduced to the trustees along with
other coaches and volunteers that have helped both the men's and women's soccer teams have early successes in the young programs.

October 16, 2015 (All day) Sierra Nevada College presents a traveling art show from the Nevada Arts Council October 16 through December 11, 2015 in the school's Prim Library.
“PANORAMA: Selections from the Nevada Arts Council’s Artist Fellowship Program,” the third in a series of traveling exhibits showcasing the recipients of the agency’s Artist Fellowship Award in the visual arts. PANORAMA features twelve exceptional artists and brings Nevada’s statewide artist landscape into view. Each contributing Fellow has demonstrated mastery of process and medium in producing a significant body of work.

Smoke from Rough Fire continues to head into Tahoe Basin
Submitted by paula on Sun, 09/06/2015 - 6:05pmWinds the are continuing to move smoke from the 85,894 acre Rough Fire burning outside of Fresno, CA into the Lake Tahoe Basin this weekend.
There are 1,967 personnel currently assigned to the fire and containment has now been increased to 31%. It is burning in the mountains between Fresno and Independence, CA.
