On any given day there are 100 South Lake Tahoe kids living away from their parents

The phone rings late one evening. The person at the other end of the line asks if there is a foster family available for one child for the night.

The person who answered the phone is Megan Ciampa, Regional Manager for Sierra Child & Family Services who is based in their South Lake Tahoe office. She says the hardest part of her job is to say "no" to phone calls like that. Just this week she's had to say "no" to three children and it was only Tuesday night when we talked. "Nothing hurts me more than to say no."

Thieves use bolt cutters in two high-end bike thefts in South Lake Tahoe

There were two high-end bike thefts in South Lake Tahoe city limits this week and the Police Department is issuing a warning.

One bike, a Kona ManoMano, was stolen off the back of a Tahoe Youth and Family Services board member's car as he attended an afternoon meeting at the agency's office on Fremont Avenue. His bike is described as a 27 speed Kona ManoMano, white in color with black printing. A witness saw a man walking by the parking lot with bolt cutters at approximately 4:20 p.m. on Monday, March 30. In a matter of moments the perpetrator was riding off on the bike.

Friday's Business Expo to feature 100 local businesses

The most innovative South Shore businesses will exhibit at the 2015 Business EXPO: Innovation in the Basin on Friday, March 27. The largest business and networking event of the year, Tahoe Chamber’s Business EXPO includes 100 local businesses ranging from restaurants and resorts to recreation providers to retailers. The event includes food and drink tastings, giveaways and a new networking lounge sponsored by the City of South Lake Tahoe, Winters Construction Group and Red Carpet Events and Design.

STAR donates to South Lake Tahoe non-profits this winter

The South Tahoe Alliance of Resorts (STAR) gave a total of $15,000 to three area non-profits this holiday season to feed families as well as secure essential upgrades to community centers/programs.

STAR gifted $5,000 to Christmas Cheer All Year’s Food for Families, which resulted in $11,400 worth of fresh food from Raleys supermarket. Through this initiative Raleys was able to purchase items at wholesale while selecting various items that were in more demand. For every $1 donated to Christmas Cheer results in more than $2 worth of food.

Tahoe Youth & Family Services holds annual Night of Giving Thursday

Tahoe Youth & Family Services is hosting their fifth annual Night of Giving 4:30-6:30 p.m. Dec. 18 at their South Lake Tahoe office at 1021 Fremont Avenue.

The night is used as an opportunity for the community to learn about what TYFS does and to help them out both financially and with items needed by the homeless youth they serve.

November is National Runaway Prevention Month

What are the first thoughts that go through your mind when you see a youth on the streets? How did they get there, where are their parents, and are they safe? It’s disturbing to realize that between 1.6 and 2.8 million youth run away annually. Most youth who run away do so because of threatening environments at home, such as physical/verbal abuse, substance abuse issues, questions of sexual orientation, or escaping state care. Unfortunately, by choosing to run away, they further subject themselves to threatening situations that impede their progress in life.

Color Blast 5k Run/Walk in South Lake Tahoe on Saturday

Tahoe Youth and Family Services is holding their Color Blast Run this Saturday at Lake Tahoe Community College. This fun, fundraiser is a 5k walk/run around the LTCC campus, and it's not just any 5k walk/run! Participants get doused with color around the course so when they cross the finish line they're covered from head to toe in color!

The original run was postponed to October 11 due to unhealthy air in September from the King Fire. This weekend will be a great fall day for the event and it's not too late to sign up.

Drug Free Coaltion working to prevent drug use for South Lake Tahoe youth

The South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition (STDFC) was formed in 2012 by Tahoe Youth and Family Services in collaboration with key community partners. Some of these community partners include the South Tahoe Police Department, El Dorado County Public Health, and Lake Tahoe Unified School District.

The agency is holding their first Genoa Color Blast fun run on Saturday, July 26th, 2014. This fundraiser will directly benefit TYFS programs and services for youth and families in the South Lake Tahoe and Douglas County communities.

County Asks for Community Input on Mental Health Services Act Plan for 2014/15

Studies show that an average of 4.6% of a population are in need of services to treat a serious mental illness at any given time. That number doubles in a population where people live below 200% of the poverty level (an annual income of $23,340 for 1 person, $47,700 for a family of 4 for example).

With the current population of El Dorado County at approximately 181,000, that means anywhere between 8,329 and 16,114 people are in need of Mental Health Services.

Public Invited to Meet New Tahoe Youth and Family Services Director Christopher Croft

The Tahoe Youth and Family Services Board of Directors has announced that Christopher Croft will take the position as the agency's new Executive Director. Croft comes to TYFS from Tacoma, Washington where he was the Family Division Director of The Rescue Mission, a non-profit agency that provides shelter, counseling and meals for homeless men, women and children.

South Lake Tahoe Teens Signing Pledges to Not Drink or Drive With Drinkers on Prom Night

The facts are startling, and, for lack of a better work, sobering. Studies show that 11% of all alcohol consumed in the U.S. is done so by youth aged 11 to 20, below the legal drinking age.

Alcohol is the most commonly used and abused drug among youth in the United States, more than tobacco and illicit drugs according to the Center for Disease Control, and is responsible for more than 4,300 annual deaths among underage youth.

The 2011 Youth Risk Behavior Survey found that among high school students, during the past 30 days:

39% drank some amount of alcohol.
22% binge drank.

South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition Seeks Help to Make Lasting Impact in Community

Melody Easton is here to make a difference. Recently tapped as the coordinator for the South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition, the action oriented Easton has hit the ground running.

Tahoe Youth & Family Services was awarded a Federal Drug Free Communities grant, bringing in $125,000 for each of the next five years to help combat drug and alcohol abuse among the youth of South Lake Tahoe. Once the grant was awarded a coordinator needed to be hired. Easton was hired and the Concordia College graduate and her husband packed up and moved from Portland, Oregon.

A Time of Giving: STAR Spreads Good Cheer

The South Tahoe Alliance of Resorts (STAR) has spent the last several months spreading good cheer to local non-profits. They gave Christmas Cheer All Year $5,000 prior to the holidays and have now given both Tahoe Youth and Family Services and Live Violence Free $5,000.

American Century Golf Championship Distributes Over $145,000 to Local Non-Profits

Twenty-eight area nonprofits were awarded $85,000 in donations from the 2013 American Century Championship. In a ceremony on Thursday, the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority distributed the checks through funds raised during the annual celebrity golf tournament.

Alissa Nourse Steps Down as Tahoe Youth & Family Services Executive Director

Tahoe Youth & Family Services announces the resignation of Executive Director, Alissa Nourse. Nourse leaves the agency after nine years of exceptional work to accept a position with Alpine County as the Director of Behavioral Health, Alpine County, California.

Under Ms. Nourse's guidance the agency has steadily grown now providing services in South Lake Tahoe, Douglas County, Incline Village and Alpine County. The budget has grown from $450,000 to $1,600,000 allowing the agency to expand services and locations.

Coalition Coordinator Job Opening

The Coalition Coordinator is responsible for facilitating the successful implementation of projects, programs and activities to accomplish the mission of the Drug Free Communities (DFC) support program grant as established by the South Tahoe Drug Free Coalition (the Coalition) and managed by Tahoe Youth & Family Services. The Coalition Coordinator will mobilize the community to prevent and reduce youth substance use by effectively representing the Coalition and building partnerships and support in the community.

United Way partners with grants to help Lake Tahoe area agencies

Several Lake Tahoe area nonprofit organizations and agencies will receive financial aid this year through partnerships announced Monday by the United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra.

The partnerships are aimed to address issues identified in each of the Lake Tahoe area communities, said Karen Barsell, CEO and president of United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra.

Barton Health supports Lake Tahoe area organizations in need

“Empowerment” is the premise of Barton Health's Community Advisory Committee (CAC). After careful evaluation of 19 grant applications, nine-non-profits recently received $24,000 in grants from the CAC. In an effort to impact the health of our community the Barton Foundation recently opened their grant opportunities for programs and organizations benefitting the South Lake Tahoe area. Barton Health Grants provide funding for programs targeted at underserved populations and/or providing great impact to the health status of the community. The total grant amount available for 2012 is set at $25,000 and is generally dispersed between five and 10 local organizations.

Livestrong, American Century give $100,000 to South Lake Tahoe area nonprofits

The holiday arrived early for 27 South Lake Tahoe non-profit organizations Thursday, Dec. 8, as $100,000 in charitable contributions was distributed on behalf of LIVESTRONG® and the American Century Championship by the Lake Tahoe Visitors Authority.

“We’re fortunate to have the support from LIVESTRONG, NBC Sports and American Century Investments to assist to the local community,” said Carol Chaplin, executive director of the LTVA in a news release. “In addition to an outstanding event which attracts visitors, our 22-year partnership also helps local groups in need.”
