South Lake Tahoe joins hands with Barton Health to create inaugural Lake Tahoe Lifestyle Festival

Many of us take advantage of all Lake Tahoe has to offer, including hiking, biking, camping, skiing and much more, but I have come across several members of our community recently who feel as though they don’t know how to exactly go about enjoying these things. So, at Barton Health, we asked ourselves … what are things South Lake Tahoe has to offer that people could enjoy more?

Triglia to close S. Tahoe pot shop; DiMatteo moving into fitness

South Lake Tahoe will definitely be down to one pot club by Aug. 20, with one of the owners staying in town to run a different business. Matt Triglia on Monday withdrew his challenge to being shut down and agreed to a slew of conditions that allow him to operate Patient2Patient medical marijuana collective until Aug. 20 at the latest. Gino DiMatteo, who was officially evicted last week from his spot on Third Street where he ran City of Angels 2, has told city officials he is buying Push Fitness.

South Lake Tahoe cancer survivor Connie Phillips inspires with fitness and friendship at Sierra Athletic Club

Remission. It’s a place filled with hope as much as it brings anxiety. But that’s where Connie Phillips is and she won’t mince words when she says every day she lives fully aware that she may die.
“And that’s why I see everyone around me as an inspiration,” the 48-year-old South Lake Tahoe breast cancer survivor says. “They may not think they are, but they are.”
If you’ve visited Sierra Athletic Club, located in the South Shore’s Tahoe Keys lately, you’ve probably been the recipient of a contagious smile from Phillips, the gym manager. A Stage 3 breast cancer survivor, Phillips has been a cheerleader and true inspiration to hundreds of women in South Lake Tahoe.

America's first carbon-neutral gym at Lake Tahoe takes green to the next level

Event Date:
June 30, 2012 - 8:00am

Although they are still an unfortunate rarity, more green gyms are popping up in the United States. They are considered green because their carbon footprint is much lower than the typical huge box gym packed with walls of televisions, rows of cardio equipment (which also have a whole additional slew of TVs), and thousands of tons of carbon-unfriendly stationary equipment. These green gyms tend to be smaller, with the primary carbon footprint generating from their electric usage. Just one treadmill can use anywhere from 500 watts to 1 kilowatt per hour while in use.

Column: A Change Will Do You Good

(Editor's note: This is the third in a regular feature by South Lake Tahoe-based Certified Wellness Coach and Advanced Integrative Therapist Krista Kline. Visit her website at www.kristaekline.com.)

A few weeks ago, I wrote about the importance of creating a vision plan in order to begin getting what you want out of life. Just ONE thing you’d like to be different. Many people when faced with this task don’t know where to start because they get overwhelmed with thinking about ALL the things they want to change. Suddenly their eyes glaze over, their thoughts race in a thousand different directions, and frustration or helplessness sets in. Making changes just feels too difficult or even impossible to tackle.

A gunman who opened fire inside a Carson City restaurant has torn a hole through the South Lake Tahoe community, taking the life of a long-time local woman, maiming her disabled husband, and sending shock waves in the community after learning the gunman has family business ties in town.
The brutal murder that happened inside the International House of Pancakes this week claimed the lives of three U.S. Army National Guard personnel and Lake Tahoe Keys resident Florence Donovan-Gunderson, 67. Shooter Eduardo Sencion, 32, of Carson City turned the automatic weapon he was packing on himself and left both communities stunned and asking questions about why such a senseless act of violence happened.
