Todd Moss promoted to Tahoe Douglas Fire Battalion/EMS Chief

Todd Moss has been promoted to Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District Battalion Chief. The South Tahoe High graduate has been with the department since 1998 when he started at a firefighter/paramedic.

In his new capacity, Moss will be responsible for the day to day operations for A Shift. Moss will also serve as the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Chief and Custodian of Records. Chief Moss will be the NV PERS Chief Officer Representative, a member of the Employee Benefits Committee and he will oversee the GASB 45 and 68 compliance requirements.

LTCC closed for winter break from December 18 to January 3

Lake Tahoe Community College will officially be closed for Winter Break from Friday, December 18, 2015 through Sunday, January 3, 2016. Classes will not be held during this period, and most of the offices and departments on campus, including the library, will not be open for business. The Winter Quarter will begin on Monday, Jan. 4.

The college’s Child Development Center, however, will be open on Mon. Dec. 21 through Wed. Dec. 23, when the hours will be 7:30 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. The CDC will then close from Thurs. Dec. 24 until Mon. Jan. 4, when normal business hours resume.

Douglas County deputies get specialized training

Sheriff Ron Pierini recently announced the graduation of two Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputies from the State of Nevada Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Law Enforcement Academy.

Douglas County Deputies Matthew Sampson and Steven Kimbrell graduated from the academy on Thursday, November 19, 2015, after attending the academy for four months. The P.O.S.T. academy is located at the State of Nevada Stewart Training Facility, in Carson City, Nev.

Scavenger Charity Dash to raise funds for Lake Tahoe Humane Society

Work to begin on the Robert Maloff Center of Excellence

The Robert Maloff Center of Excellence plans have been approved, and construction preparation for the parking garage will begin this month.

The Center of Excellence will expand orthopedic, sports performance, and wellness services on the Barton Health campus. Individuals will work with a health navigator and a team of medical providers to develop and implement a customized care plan that integrates health, fitness, nutrition, and medical expertise.

South Lake Tahoe Rite Aid remodeling, bringing in Thrifty Ice Cream

The South Lake Tahoe Rite Aid store is undergoing a major remodel along with about 450 other locations that will bring in changes, including a Thrifty Ice Cream shop and wellness center.

Lake Tahoe Community College closed for Staff Development Day

Lake Tahoe Community College will be closed on Thursday, Sept. 3 so all college employees can take part in professional development training. All offices on campus will be closed, including the Child Development Center, the Roberta Mason Library, and the Fitness Education Center.

The college will resume its normal hours of operation on Friday, Sept. 4. For more information about this closure, please contact the Superintendent/President’s Office at (530) 541-4660 ext. 210.

Elements Day Spa to celebrate second location inside Fitness Evolution

Elements Day Spa, a full service day spa and retail shop, will introduce its new location and services to the public during a grand opening from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 3. Late summer soccer conditioning class added at LTCC

With interest of being on the Lake Tahoe Community College soccer teams on the rise, the school has decided to add a conditioning class to accommodate the big number of both local and international students at the campus.

The men's team, just off their successful inaugural season that landed them a conference championship, had 90 students try out for a place on the team this week, and 60 of them are from other countries. The women’s team is also benefiting from a lot of interest, both from local athletes and abroad.

$10 million gift presented for Barton Wellness and Sports Performance Center

South Lake Tahoe resident Lisa Maloff presented a $10 million check to the Barton Foundation on Wednesday night for the building of the Robert Maloff Center of Excellence. The donation was made in memory of her husband Robert, who co-owned and operated the Lake Tahoe Inn and Timber Cove Lodge.

Mom’s Morning Out: An Event for Women, by Women

Mom’s Morning Out was started by Barton Health as a health and wellness program for new moms. The program has grown and last year more than 200 women, not just moms, participated in the event.

South Lake Tahoe students complete WeCan! Health and Fitness Challenge

South Lake Tahoe elementary students just completed four weeks of Barton Health's We Can program. We Can stands for "Ways to Enhance Children’s Activity and Nutrition."

The students had weekly challenges that focused on fitness and nutrition goals. PE teachers from Bijou Elementary, Environmental Magnet School, Sierra House, and Tahoe Valley orchestrated the program by motivating students with weekly goals and the Cafeteria staff served fruits and vegetables to match the color of the week.

Community fitness challenge being held at SLT Recreation Center

Looking for some incentive to start getting more exercise? There is a new challenge program being offered called the Monthly Wellness Challenge where community members will compete for a monthly certificate and gift package.

The month of March is called 'Sweat Sessions' and will track the number of hours particpants spend in the Recreation Center's weight room. After paying the daily use fee, participants will track the amount of time spent in the weight room from March 1 to March 31. Sessions are tracked in 30 minute intervals.

Barton receives $10 million donation to build a sports and wellness center

Just a few months after she donated $5 million to Lake Tahoe Community College, Lisa Maloff has made another large donation in honor of her late husband, Robert Maloff.

Barton Memorial Hospital is the latest recipient of Maloff's generosity. She made a $10 million gift to fund the building of a health and sports performance center on the Barton Memorial Hospital campus. The new center will be called the Robert Maloff Center of Excellence.

Barton Health offers fitness training for local running events

There are some big running events in South Lake Tahoe this summer and Barton Health is providing the tools needed to perform safely and at your peak.

The community is invited to join Barton Health’s “Train for an Event Fitness Challenge” from March to June.

“Whether you are just getting off the couch or a seasoned athlete, this program is designed to motivate you and make you game day ready for one of our local race events,” said Krista Carson, Barton Health’s program coordinator.

Why skiers get injured

Skiing is a phenomenally exciting and fun sport. However, the injury rate is relatively high, with more than 20,000 knee injuries sustained each year by skiers in the U.S. alone, most of which involved the ACL. The question is why and what can you do about it?

My advice on how to avoid common injuries is based on my 55 years of skiing, more than two decades of being an orthopaedic surgeon for the U.S. Ski Team, the Pro Ski tour, the Jeep Tour, 48 Straight Ski tour and other winter sports events. However it is not gospel. There are many views and disagreements on skiing safety.

South Lake Tahoe bike trails to receive snow removal in pilot program

Due to a lack of snow in South Lake Tahoe, the new bike path snow removal policy has yet to be put into action.

While snow plows are deployed when three inches of snow accumulates on roadways, there was never a policy to determine when snow would be removed on bike trails.

This winter the City has launched a pilot program to include snow removal on Class 1 bike paths as a secondary feature, after roads and City buildings, during a significant snow event.

They will start 2015 with gathering as many people in 11 countries around the world at noon on Saturday to have the World's Largest Simultaneous Group Workout, and South Lake Tahoe isn't going to be left behind.

Grand opening for Douglas County Community and Senior Center

A brand new, 83,225 sq ft community and senior center will be unveiled December 6. The $16.9 million center was expected to open in February, 2015 but construction is ahead of schedule.

Billed as something to serve the community from cradle to grave, the Douglas County Community and Senior Center located across the street from Lampe Park in Gardnerville, NV will have a senior center with a dining room for 300 people, administrative offices, senior day care, health nurse office, preschool, activity rooms, fitness and workout areas and gymnasiums.

South Lake Tahoe students take the WeCan! fitness and nutrition challenge

Almost 2,000 elementary students from South Lake Tahoe completed the WeCan! fitness and nutritional program on Friday, October 10.

Students from pre-kindergarten through fifth grade at Bijou, Lake Tahoe Environmental Magnet, Sierra House and Tahoe Valley Elementary Schools participated in the four week program.

The students participated in weekly challenges that focused on fitness and nutrition goals. Challenges included eating fruits and vegetables of a particular color, drinking more water, stretching, exercising and trying new healthy foods.

Changes on the South Shore: Edgewood's new lodge, new look

Ground won't break until May on the new Edgewood Tahoe Resort but the golf course is already undergoing major changes to prepare for the big project. Trees have been cleared, the 9th hole has been reconfigured and made into a par 3, and a 10 foot tall fence is being erected around the construction site.

The new pier has already been constructed and will allow guests to boat to the resort.

Kids Looking for Things to do This Summer? How About STAR Camp?

The City of South Lake Tahoe Community Services department started their STAR (South Tahoe Adventure Recreation) camps this week. Youth and teens ages 6 to 16 can use this summer to explore Lake Tahoe by enjoying field trips, swimming, going to the beach and many other activities, all in a safe and fun environment.

El Dorado County Fair Opens in Placerville

It's that time of year again. The county fair, full of funnel cakes, carnival rides, animals, music, exhibits, wheelbarrow races, wine and beer competition and good old fashioned fun.

The El Dorado County Fair opened on Thursday and runs through Sunday, Father's Day at the fairgrounds in Placerville. The theme this year is "Photos, Fathers and Fairs."

The County Sheriff's Office invites community members to stop by their booth and see the brand new state of art patrol vehicles. They'll have a new SUV and sedan on display so people can see inside and check out their new features.

LPGA Great Annika Sorenstam Will Play in South Lake Tahoe's Celebrity Golf Tournament

The competitive landscape of the American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe will dramatically alter in 2014 with the addition of LPGA great Annika Sorenstam.

The legendary golf superstar, winner of 89 international tournaments and over $22 million, is among the most successful players in history. A part-time resident of Lake Tahoe and mother of two, Sorenstam will play on even terms with pro athletes in the nationally televised, 54-hole, $600,000 competition at Edgewood Tahoe Golf Course.

Fundraiser Saturday for Motorcycle Accident Victim's Family

Push Fitness will host a fundraiser from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. April 12 for their massage therapist, Luisa, who is recovering from the loss of her daughter, Audrey Genesis Rugamas. Her coworkers hope to raise funds for living expenses so she can take time off work.

The event will include face painting, fitness pictures, karate show, waxing and sugaring, cut-a-thon, chair message.

Funds raised with these services will go toward Luisa’s expenses.

Local Elementary School May Be Rebranded as Sierra House Mountain Academy

The idea of Sierra House Elementary School becoming the Sierra House Mountain Academy was presented to the Lake Tahoe Unified School Board this week. If this becomes reality, Sierra House would join the other themed South Lake Tahoe elementary schools: Meyers is the Environmental Magnet School and Tahoe Valley is the Performing Arts Magnet School.

South Lake Tahoe Woman Involved in Motorcycle Crash Dies of Her Injuries

A 21 year old South Lake Tahoe woman involved in a motorcycle accident on Saturday night in Carson City has succumbed to her injuries according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. Audrey G. Rugamas was taken off life support on Wednesday, March 26. Ms. Rugamas had received severe injuries in the accident which also injured the motorcycle's driver, 20 year old Andrey L. Gallegos of Sparks, NV. An update on his condition has not been released.

South Lake Tahoe Business EXPO on Friday

A record-breaking 100 businesses will participate in the 2014 Business EXPO –“Tahoe South in ACTION” this Friday, March 28. The event begins at 4:30pm and continues until 8:30pm in Harrah’s Lake Tahoe Convention Center. LTCC Announcing 40th Anniversary Plans at March Press Conference

The Lake Tahoe Community College District was voted into existence 40 years ago, on March 5, 1974. The College has big plans to celebrate its anniversary with a number of fun and educational events this year. Members of the media, the community, and college staff and faculty are all welcome to attend a press conference on Wednesday, March 5th at 11 a.m. to hear the College’s plans to mark its 40th year, and to honor its history. The conference will be held at the Econo Lodge at 2659 Lake Tahoe Boulevard, where the College first offered classes and welcomed its first students.

Grand Opening of South Lake Tahoe's Youth Sports & Recreation

Youth Sports and Recreation celebrated a ribbon cutting on January 31
with Tahoe Chamber on hand to officiate. Owner Tim Wesley invited guests
to tour his facility and learn more about the business, which operates to promote physical activity and provide nutritional education to children ages 5 to 17.

Youth Sports and Recreation also provides a tutoring center for after school care. Instructors demonstrated martial arts while children tried
the various machines available, including stationary bikes that allowed riders to play video games as they cycled.

Celebrities Attend Grand Opening of The Landing in South Lake Tahoe

Model and television personality Heidi Klum hit the red carpet in South Lake Tahoe Saturday night to help celebrate the opening of the new luxury hotel, The Landing. She was joined by 10 time Grammy award winner Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds, local business owners and associates.

The party highlighted what the hotel is bringing to the south shore: a 5 star boutique property with high end amenities, a beautiful onyx bar, a restaurant under the direction of a celebrated British chef, fire pits as well as a new wedding and event venue.

Road to Sochi: South Lake Tahoe's Kashima 6th in Deer Valley World Cup

Sho Kashima of South Lake Tahoe finished in 6th place at the Visa Freestyle International FIS World Cup at Deer Valley on Saturday. After advancing to the advanced to the superfinal, but he lost control for just a second before the bottom air.
