Sierra House Elementary holds Olympic Games ceremony

Sierra House Elementary School celebrated the opening of the 2018 Winter Olympic Games on Friday morning with lots of excitement. They had the torch, the cheering fans, the Olympic flag and the national anthem.

A torch relay started at 9:15 a.m. with torch bearing students running their portion of the relay before passing it on to the next runner. The relay circled the school a few times, with each passing of a runner drawing cheers from the crowd of students, parents and faculty.

Special wildland firefighter course at LTCC

A comprehensive one-week long course, Wildland Fire Safety and Hand Crew Operations, Basic Wildland Firefighter, will be held March 19-24, 2018 from 8:00 a.m. to 4:50 p.m. daily at Lake Tahoe Community College (LTCC).

Instructor Keegan Schafer will instruct students on the safety aspects of fighting wildland fires and the methods, procedures and responsibilities of firefighters. The course includes instruction in specialized equipment, physical fitness, fire behavior and suppression, human factors and general fireline construction.

Transient arrested after man stabbed at South Lake Tahoe bus stop

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF -A transient man is behind bars this evening after allegedly stabbing a 27-year-old man at the South Y Transit center.

At 5:33 p.m. Saturday, officers from the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) responded to a call of a stabbing at the corner of Lake Tahoe Blvd and Emerald Bay Road.

Upon arrival they found Kiefer Chriss, 57, being held down on the ground by some Good Samaritans and a 27-year-old male stabbing victim.

Tahoe Chamber event brings in $2,550 and food for Bread and Broth

The Lake Tahoe South Shore Chamber of Commerce's annual Connect for a Cause on January 18 had a great turnout from the community, bring in both cash and food donations for Bread and Broth.

Over 100 people attended the charity mixer at Riva Grill and they enjoyed appetizers and Riva Grill’s signature cocktail, Wet Woodies during the event.

Bread and Broth serves the community with weekly food giveaways and two hot meals a week, and their Bread and Broth 4 Kids programs gives over 170 South Lake Tahoe children in grades K-8 a backpack of weekend food.

Join and track steps in the Billion Step Challenge

How many steps can you take in 97 days? Almost a million?

Join El Dorado County's team in the 1 Billion Steps Challenge which tracks participant's steps through apps from January 1 to April 8, 2018.

The challenge is through the American Public Health's Associations (APHA) who are encouraging Americans to get out and walk, roll and get moving. You don't even have to do anything once registered (except walk, run and move, of course)...your phone or other fitness tracker will communicate with the challenge.

Revived interest in sale of Kingsbury Middle School

Since escrow on Kingsbury Middle School fell through over a year ago, the school has remained vacant and unlisted at an annual cost of $45,000. Now the Douglas County School District is considering putting the property up for sale once again.

Lake Tahoe Marathon events around the lake; Some road closures

The kickoff events are now in the record books, and racers are now preparing for the rest of Lake Tahoe Marathon week to get started. Please note, State Route 89 will be closed to vehicle traffic in each direction around Emerald Bay from approximately 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 15 during the Lake Tahoe Marathon. Motorists should be aware of runners along the highway from Homewood to South Lake Tahoe.

Lake Tahoe Unified School District is looking for volunteers to help them in their quest to help students with a healthy lifestyle as well as their efforts to be sustainable and use of renewable energy.

Community members with an interest or expertise in any of these areas are encouraged to join one of the following committees:

Wellness Committee – Nutrition, Wellness Committee – Physical Education and Activity, and Renewable Energy and Sustainability Committee

$85M in sales at Tahoe Beach Club during first phase

During their first summer of sales, 39 of the 46 available contracts to buy a luxury condominium home at the Tahoe Beach Club sold for a total of $85 million.

This development at the end of Kahle Drive in Stateline, Nevada is the first full ownership lakefront in 30 years at Lake Tahoe. They are being built on land that was once a trailer park.

Homebuyers have been mostly from the Bay Area, Southern California, Texas and New York areas.

SLTPD: Gunshots, chase and knife lead to arrests of two transients

The South Lake Tahoe Police Department made 53 arrests out of the 540 calls they responded to between September 4-18, 2017.

7th annual Tahoe Show Fitness and Bodybuilding Championship

STATELINE, Nev. - The 7th annual TAHOE SHOW Fitness and Bodybuilding Championship presented by Carr Cellular Fitness will be held at the MontBleu Resort Showroom on August 26, 2017 starting at 9:30 a.m.

The NPC-sanctioned event is projected to attract over 2,000 spectators and over 350 athletes who will compete for custom championship trophies and a coveted National Qualification.

South Lake Tahoe native chosen as interim principal at Sierra House Elementary

Lake Tahoe Unified School District (LTUSD) officials didn't have to look far in getting a replacement for Ryan Galles, outgoing Sierra House Elementary principal.

South Lake Tahoe native Karin Holmes will take the school's top spot on an interim basis beginning August 7.

"It is very exciting," Karin told South Tahoe Now. "What they are doing at Sierra House is amazing! With the garden and health and fitness focus there is no moss growing at the school."

Sierra House principal leaving Lake Tahoe for Vacaville

Ryan Galles, the principal of Sierra House Elementary in South Lake Tahoe, has announced that he is leaving Lake Tahoe Unified School District.

Galles has accepted the position of Director of Elementary Education for the Vacaville Union School District (VUSD), a district with 12,000 students and 10 elementary schools.

Zalanta in South Lake Tahoe celebrates grand opening

The Zalanta Resort at the Village celebrated the completion of their first phase Tuesday with a grand opening and ribbon cutting for local dignitaries.

On what was formerly known as "the hole," Zalanta is the first whole ownership luxury condominium residences in the Lake Tahoe Basin since Lakeland Village was completed 30 years ago.

The 30 residences are all one-story and available in 2-, 3- and 4-bedroom units. The cheapest unit, priced at $950,000, and the most expensive at $2.125M have both sold as well as several other residences. The second phase will add another 60 residences.

$475,000 awarded to 118 South Tahoe High seniors

During a series of recent awards ceremonies, South Tahoe High(STHS) students were recognized for academic success, attendance and bilingual immersion.

The annual Senior Awards Night saw 118 students recognized with $475,000 in scholarships. During the evening, 64 individual presentations honored one or more students for achievements.

City's business plan presented; Public encouraged to review

Every two years a new business plan is presented to the South Lake Tahoe City Council, outlining goals, the vision and strategic priorities. This is done after each election.

In February, City staff, Council and community members got together for a two-day strategic planning session, and the results that came out of that were put into the 2017/18 South Lake Tahoe Business Plan.

Pro golfer Paige Spiranac to play at American Century Championship in Lake Tahoe

New company on board to plan new South Lake Tahoe Recreation Center

A new partner is now on board to help bring a new recreation center and swim complex to South Lake Tahoe, construction of which could start as early as 2018.

Voters in November approved a two percent Transient Occupancy Tax (TOT) increase to fund the new project that benefits not only locals but tourists as well.

South Lake Tahoe school boundaries discussed at next LTUSD board meeting

During the last meeting of the Lake Tahoe Unified School District Board of Trustees, discussion about neighborhood schools and theme schools surrounded the proposed STEAM Academy at Al Tahoe Elementary when it reopens. STEAM - science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics - would be the focus of all students at the school, much as the themes surround all other local elementary schools.

At the request of the board, LTUSD Superintendent Dr. Jim Tarwater will present the demographic data from each school in relation to where they reside.

Inn by the Lake changes name to Hotel Azure Tahoe – $3.5 million renovation completed

Inn by the Lake in South Lake Tahoe has changed their name, and along with a new name comes new rooms and suites, and renovated public areas.

The hotel located at 3300 Lake Tahoe Blvd., is now called Hotel Azure, a name to match the lake across the street and the skies that surround them.

Hotel Azure has completed extensive renovations with the re-opening of the hotel in time for ski season.

‘Forest bathing’ is latest fitness trend to hit the U.S.

Over thousands of years of human history, we have effectively become an indoor species. Particularly for those of us trapped in the cubicle life, often the only times we regularly step foot outside is for our daily work commute or to run errands. In 2001, a survey sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency found that, on average, Americans spend 87 percent of their time indoors and 6 percent in an enclosed vehicle.

Tahoe Douglas Fire District promotes Jim Antti

Jim Antti started off working as a firefighter/paramedic for Tahoe Doulgas Fire Protection District 24 years ago, and today he is their new assistant chief.

Antti was hired in June of 1992, promoted to captain in February, 2003, and to battalion chief in June, 2013.

Lake Tahoe local launches wearable tech product for athletes

A new device that lets swimmers visually monitor their pace and intervals has been developed by South Lake Tahoe local Victor Szanto. Pace…Me is the first wearable, visual pacing device that enables athletes to make adjustments during their workout, allowing them to improve their times and manage fatigue.

The device uses LED technology for realtime feedback and can be used both from swim and drylands workouts.

Founder Victor Szanto says he developed Pace…Me to fill a gap in the current market.

Ground breaking at new Robert Maloff Center of Excellence at Barton

It's been 55 years since the Barton family donated the land where the first hospital in South Lake Tahoe was built, and it was in that same footprint of land that the ground was broken for the new center 26,000 square foot center on Tuesday.

STMS students rise to the Bike Week challenge

During the past three days, students from South Lake Tahoe schools have been participating in Bike to School days as part of the two-week Tahoe Bike Challenge.

At South Tahoe Middle School, students rose to the occasion and came out in big numbers on their bikes each day.

Each participant received a raffle ticket for each day they rode to school. 15 students were drawn daily for a plethora of prizes including Amgen Tour of California shirts and hates, bike reflectors, bells and lights, gift bags and more.

Douglas County Sheriff's Deputies graduate from Law Enforcement Academy

Sheriff Ron Pierini has announced the recent graduation of two Douglas County Sheriff’s Deputies from the State of Nevada Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) Law Enforcement Academy.

Douglas County Sheriff’s Office Deputies Jose Guerra and Bruce Jacobsen graduated from the academy on Thursday, May 12 after attending the academy at the State of Nevada Stewart Training Facility in Carson City for four months.

Sacramento King's co-owner selling Tahoe home for $35 million

Mark Mastrov, a Sacramento Kings co-owner and founder of 24-Hour Fitness, is selling his waterfront Lake Tahoe home in Glenbrook, Nev., for $35 million.

Chief Jeff Meston and South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue (SLTFR) held their annual awards ceremony on Friday January 29, 2016 to celebrate the department's teams members and accomplishments for the past year.

First South Lake Tahoe baby of the year born on January 1

When the clock struck midnight on New Year’s Day, Rogelio Castañeda and a very pregnant Margarita García gave a New Year’s toast with a glass of champagne and a glass of apple cider, respectively. Three hours later, after a brief slumber, Margarita woke up in labor.

The couple headed to Barton Family Birthing Center and at 6:36 p.m. on January 1, Jeremy Nicolas Castañeda García was born. Jeremy weighed seven pounds, eleven ounces and was 20.5 inches long. He was named after Margarita’s mother Geremia, who passed away when Margarita was young.
