The South Lake Tahoe Police Canine Association has announced that K9 Tara will be retiring on May 17 during the annual South Lake Tahoe Police Department's (SLTPD) awards ceremony.

The 10-year-old Tara's handler is Sergeant Jason Cheney.

Tahoe Valley Thunderbird Choir shines at music competition

The Tahoe Valley Thunderbird Choir recently made their first trip to the Music in the Parks Choir Festival in Fairfield, Calif. Choir director Allyssa Little wanted the student singers to experience performing under pressure in the presence of top quality competitors.

Truck breaks axle as towing cars through South Lake Tahoe

Many thought the smoke and back up off traffic in front of the casino corridor Friday was the result of another underground explosions, but this time a truck and trailer were the culprit.

Tahoe Douglas Fire responded to the call of heavy smoke on Highway 50 between Harrahs Tahoe and Harvey's.

Two rigs carrying the vehicles were in the westbound lanes when one of them lost their rear trailer axle. There was a resulting brake fire that blew out a tire according to Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District Fire Marshal Eric Guevin. He said it was very smoky but a "minimalistic" fire.

Building issues force LTVA out of their South Lake Tahoe office

The California office of Lake Tahoe Visitor's Authority (LTVA) has been closed due to roof and flooding issues, with all of their operations in their Stateline office, for now.

Last year's flooding caused LTVA to rip out the carpet in the back of the building which was the first county jail at the lake, opening in 1947. Three staff executives who had their offices at the rear of the building were moved to the front.

Wind advisory up before snow hits the Sierra

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A couple of fast-moving systems will produce gusty winds and periods of relatively light rain and snow through Thursday in the Lake Tahoe Basin. Much colder temperatures are expected on Thursday, then dry weather with a warming trend returns for Friday and Saturday. A system will bring wetter conditions starting Sunday, with colder conditions returning for Monday and Tuesday.

There is a very warm, wet storm heading to Lake Tahoe, the Sierra and western Nevada, bringing with is gusty winds and significant rains beginning Friday and continuing through Saturday. There is a flood watch in effect from Friday, April 6, 05:00 p.m. until Sunday, April 8 at 5:00 a.m. The main concern is the potential for flooding along creeks, streams, rivers and in urban areas.

Review: Dinner theater in South Lake Tahoe a real treat

For a second year, the Rotary Club of South Lake Tahoe has brought live theater to the Lake Tahoe Golf Course. This year, a production of Divorce Southern Style hits the stage created inside the clubhouse.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I received my tickets, but I was thoroughly impressed and the night was very enjoyable with a great three-course dinner and lots of laughs.

The golf course's brand new bar was unveiled on opening night of "Divorce," so it was the centerpiece before the food and entertainment. Beautifully done with copper and wood throughout.

Man suffers life-threatening injuries after running into snow plow

A man from Reno, Nevada suffered life-threatening injuries on just after midnight on Saturday after his car hit the back of a snow plow on US-395 northbound near the Parr Boulevard

A preliminary investigation by the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) shows that a silver 2014 Nissan Sentra driven by a 44-year-old man was traveling northbound on US-395 in the second travel lane from the left. Two more weather systems heading to Lake Tahoe: Rain and snow expected

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The week is starting out beautiful: blue skies, great powder and mile temperatures, but it won't last long.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno, light valley rain and Sierra snow and rain will develop Tuesday and Tuesday night, with some travel impacts possible for Sierra and northeast California passes. A second system, which is much stronger, will bring lower valley rain, Sierra rain and snow, and gusty winds starting on Wednesday and continuing until a cold front moves through late Thursday into Friday morning.

Douglas Raymond Rousse 1950 ~ 2018

Douglas Raymond Rousse, 67, passed away on March 10, 2018 at his home in South Lake Tahoe, Nevada. He was the husband of Nancy Kyle Rousse. They shared 46 years of marriage together.

Born in Detroit, Michigan on May 11, 1950, he was the son of Darcy Raymond Rousse and Yvonne Charlotte Labadie Rousse. He graduated from Ferris State University in Big Rapids, Michigan. He worked in transportation logistics and finance throughout his career.

Man allegedly steals beer, attempts to drive away with clerk on car's hood

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 21-year-old Sacramento man is currently in the El Dorado County Jail on charges of robbery, conspiracy to commit a crime and DUI after allegedly stealing beer from the 7-11 store on Pioneer Trail.

On March 11, Craig Joseph Cumbra is suspected of entering the store and leaving with beer he hadn't paid for. The store clerk tried to stop Cumbra from driving away by standing in front of his vehicle. The suspect drove away with the clerk on the hood. The clerk jumped off as the car left the parking lot.

Winter Storm Watch in South Lake Tahoe Tuesday-Wednesday

Monday should be a beautiful Spring-like day across the region with highs reaching into the upper 60s across western Nevada and 50s in the Sierra.

There is a Winter Storm Warning in place for the Lake Tahoe Basin from 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 13 until 5:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 14.

Snow plow off the road near Echo Summit; Road closed until moved

9:15 a.m. update: Highway 50 is reopened Friday morning. The Caltrans snow plow is still down the embankment but crews were able to get it back up on its wheels. They decided to leave the truck down the embankment as traffic was backing up and they will retrieve it at a later time.

Body found in South Lake Tahoe; Police investigating

6:00 p.m. 2/26/18: The man who was found dead on the side of Emerald Bay Road in South Lake Tahoe has been identified as local resident Douglas Knapp.

The El Dorado County coroner's office said they will be doing an autopsy and at this time they do not have a cause of death for the 55-year-old man.

There is no indication of foul play or that Knapp was hit by a vehicle, according to South Lake Tahoe Police.

Chain controls on Sierra roads; slick conditions causing travel issues

Tow trucks are being kept busy tonight as many drivers are finding difficulty navigating roads around Lake Tahoe. There are currently areas of freezing fog and heavy snow, with whiteouts on some higher elevations roads. With this being a holiday weekend, expect more traffic than normal.

Three arrested for extortion attempt in Washoe County

Washoe County Sheriff’s Office arrested three men Wednesday night after an attempt to extort $40,000 dollars from a resident living in the area of El Rancho Drive east of Sun Valley Boulevard. The arrests were the result of a successful sting operation by Sheriff’s Office detectives.

Slight chance of snow Thursday, high chance next week

It has been a chilly day in South Lake Tahoe with winds from the southwest up to 20 mph and temps in the 30s. This is in front of a weak weather system that will pass over the Lake Tahoe/Reno area this evening and Thursday morning.

Saturday will be the warmest day of the forecast (and possibly the rest of the month) with winds aloft becoming more west and a little better mixing for temps rising a few degrees above average.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - There is a Lake Wind Advisory in effect for Lake Tahoe until 10:00 p.m. Sunday as a cold front moves through the region.

Winds will be from the southwest 10 to 20 mph with gusts to 30 mph by mid to late morning, increasing to 15 to 25 mph with gusts to 40 mph in the afternoon. Waves on the lake will be increasing to 2 to 4 feet this afternoon, with the highest waves from mid-lake to northeastern shores.

Man arrested after allegedly stealing car in Reno, leading officers to South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE CALIF. - A 35-year-old California man was arrested in South Lake Tahoe Wednesday morning after he allegedly stole a vehicle in Reno, Nevada.

Raheem Ahmed Hanif, from Rodeo, California, was allegedly inside a 2017 Jeep Renegade when the Lithia Jeep dealer in Reno opened for business on January 31. Hanif then drove the car off the lot when the nighttime barriers were removed according to Officer Michael E. Brown of the California Highway Patrol (CHP) in South Lake Tahoe.

South Lake Tahoe man sentenced to 183-years to life for brutal attack

A former motel maintenance worker at a South Lake Tahoe motel has been sentenced to 183 years to life for the brutal sexual assault of a 22-year-old Macedonian exchange student in 2015.

Manuel Ovidio Ramos-Munoz was found guilty in November, 2017 on seven felony counts, including kidnapping for the purpose of committing a sexual assault, as well as six additional counts and numerous special allegations relating to the subsequent sexual assault of the victim.

Mild week ahead in South Lake Tahoe, no precipitation in forecast

It could be awhile before South Lake Tahoe has any precipitation as an upper level ridge is in place and will provide an extended period of dry conditions with above normal temperatures for much of the upcoming week and possibly into mid-February. The blocking high pressure is building off the the West Coast according to the National Weather Service (NWS). The only weather event in the near future are the breezy conditions that can be expected Tuesday as a dry front passes by the region.

Records could be equaled or fall on Monday and Tuesday.

Pedestrian hit by car on Pioneer Trail in South Lake Tahoe

A 27-year-old South Lake Tahoe resident is recovering after being hit by a vehicle late Thursday evening.

At about 11:00 p.m. on January 25, a vehicle was heading southwest on Pioneer Trail and passing in front of the Americana Village when it hit the pedestrian.

The driver said they did not see the victim and immediately stopped and is cooperating with police. South Lake Tahoe Police (SLTPD) and Fire Rescue responded and the pedestrian was transported to Barton Hospital with non-life threatening injuries according to SLTPD Lt. Shannon Laney.

The South Lake Tahoe Cancer League has a lot to be grateful for this past year. For nearly four decades, the volunteers of this organization have driven patients from South Lake Tahoe to their medical treatment, at no charge to the patients or their families. The drivers take patients to Reno, Carson City, Minden, Truckee, and as far away as UC Davis. The Cancer League also gives limited monetary assistance in the form of small grants to the patients to help with their monthly expenses.

Two weather systems headed to Lake Tahoe this week

Winter will finally make an appearance to Lake Tahoe, the Sierra Nevada and Northern Nevada by the end of the week and even into next week as well. A much welcomed Sierra snow will be on tap, as a colder, stronger storm is set to move into the region according to the National Weather Service in Reno. This will bring the first significant snowfall to the Sierra that we`ve seen in a while.

The latest weather models continue to show a weak to moderate Atmospheric River (AR) moving into the Sierra, combining with much colder temperatures behind the cold front.

Man extricated from crashed truck on Pioneer Trail in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - A man from Northern California is recovering after suffering from a medical condition that caused him to crash his Chevy Silverado pickup into a tree Sunday morning in South Lake Tahoe.

At 9:12 a.m. January 7, emergency crews responded to the crash site on Pioneer Trail near Needle Peak Road. South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue had to extricate the unidentified man from the truck.

The man, who is in his mid-40s, was alone in the truck when he had a seizure. Witnesses reported seeing the driver attempt to pull his truck off the roadway prior to the crash.

Armed robbery at Douglas County Subway

1/8/18 UPDATE 3:45PM: The Douglas County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s assistance in an armed robbery that occurred at a Subway Restaurant located at 1328 Hwy 395 in Gardnerville. A Caucasian male in his 20’s wearing a black mask, light colored jacket; dark pants and black tennis shoes entered the business on 1-6-18 at 6:15 p.m. and brandished a weapon.

First baby of 2018 arrives in South Lake Tahoe

Barton Health welcomed the first baby born in the New Year, Jessana Joyce Walker, on Tuesday, January 2 at 8:03 a.m. at Barton Memorial Hospital’s Family Birthing Center. She weighed 7 pounds, 11 ounces and measured 19.5 inches long and was born to Julia Gomez and Javier Walker of Markleeville, Calif. The couple named their daughter Jessana as a blend of their mothers’ names.

Change in permitting process for Washoe County projects in Lake Tahoe

Washoe County, Nevada and the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) are continuing to work together to streamline project permitting for their customers, and have announced a change in the permitting process for projects in the Washoe County portion of the Lake Tahoe Basin.

Temperatures well above normal as we ring in 2018

Temperatures are well above normal in Lake Tahoe and there is no snow in sight, for now. The highs will be in the 50s and will be close to record breaking.

There is a persistent ridge of high pressure along the West Coast, preventing major storms from breaking through and bringing snow to Lake Tahoe. Expect things to not change through New Year's Day, but there is some hope for precipitation at the end of next week.

A front will drop down near Susanville this weekend, but nothing is expected further south, but temperatures will drop a couple of degrees.

Warm Room in South Lake Tahoe opens on Christmas Eve

There will be two homes for the Warm Room this winter, and the first one opens on Christmas Eve at 7:00 p.m.

From December 24 - December 31, 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m., the Tahoe Coalition for the Homeless (TCH) will open the Warm Room at the Lake Tahoe Community Presbyterian Church located at 2733 Lake Tahoe Boulevard. Access to the room will be through the lower parking lot in the back of the church, not through the front door.

"We appreciate the support of the local faith community for rallying behind our common missions of service," said the Coalition.

South Tahoe High's McCallan Castles signs to play for Cal Bears

There will be a lot more Cal football fans in South Lake Tahoe over the next four years after McCallan Castles signed his letter of intent to play for Coach Wilcox and the University of California Bears Wednesday.

The highly recruited South Tahoe High School (STHS) senior had 18 Division 1 schools trying to get him to sign with them. He narrowed the list down to Utah, Washington State, Duke and Cal before making the decision, something that was easy the moment he stepped onto the Berkeley campus.

Stolen painting recovered in Sacramento

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, CALIF. - Detectives from South Lake Tahoe Department (SLTPD) posing as potential buyers on Craigslist have uncovered a painting stolen from a gallery in the Heavenly Village.

On Saturday December 9, SLTPD received a report of a stolen painting from Pacific Crest Gallery. The painting, Three Bears Playing Golf, valued at $1195, was taken from the stores front sidewalk display by an unknown suspect.

Wind advisory and 20% chance of snow in Lake Tahoe Saturday

A quick moving, weak weather system will affect the area Friday night through Saturday morning bringing very light snowfall across the region. The inversions we've seen in the Reno-Tahoe area are likely to strengthen again early next week before a cold front moves through in the middle of next week and breaks them down.

A weak ridge will be in place early next week which will again provide dry conditions, light winds, and the valley inversions. However, models do continue to show a potential for a more potent slider type system on Wednesday.

Man arrested on felony DUI charges after crashing into two cars and light pole

A Fallbrook, California man was arrested in South Lake Tahoe Saturday after allegedly driving at a high rate of speed through Stateline while intoxicated before hitting two cars and a light pole.
