Carson City woman dies in Douglas County collision

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Nev. - A Carson City woman died after being struck by a SUV on US-395 early Saturday morning.

At approximately 6:20 a.m., troopers from the Nevada Highway Patrol (NHP) responded to reports of a crash involving a pedestrian in the area of Cradebaugh Bridge and Stephanie Way in Douglas County.

Winter Weather Advisory up for Lake Tahoe: Winds and 2-4" forecast for lake level

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory and Lake Wind Advisory for Sunday, December 16.

It all starts with the wind advisory in place from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. Winds will be from the south-southwest 15 to 25 mph with gusts up to 40 mph. This will result in waves on Lake Tahoe from 2 to 4 feet, the highest ones along northern shore. Small boats, kayaks and paddle boards will be prone to capsizing and should remain off lake waters until conditions improve.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A quiet day today will be followed by a system coming to the area Sunday through early Monday. This system will have a more southerly track and bring a round of light snow to the Sierra and a few showers into western Nevada. Generally quiet and dry weather is expected to persist for some time after Monday according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Reno.

Sierra House students could have split schedule at Al Tahoe until mid-February

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The third graders from Sierra House Elementary are now at the Al Tahoe school site, and on Monday, December 17, the rest of the students will join them. At first it was believed that work could possibly be completed by the time students return to school after the holiday break but now that the hired restoration specialists are getting into the walls and ceiling the scope of work has increased.

Belfor cannot commit to the scope of work until the crews get into their job, so the plan is to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. As of today, the

Some Sierra House students will move to Al Tahoe this week; rest head over Dec. 17

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - There is now a new plan for students at Sierra House Elementary School, one that will require some to move over to the Al Tahoe site sooner than expected.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The three newly elected South Lake Tahoe City councilmembers were sworn in on Tuesday along with the new city clerk, and a new mayor and mayor pro-tem have been selected.

Devin Middlebrook, Tamara Wallace, Cody Bass and Sue Blankenship all took the oath of office in front of a packed City Council meeting on December 11, 2018.

Brooke Laine was unanimously chosen for mayor and Jason Collin was unanimously selected for mayor pro-tem.

Minivans are not supposed to be hot rods or even quick. They are for hauling the family with comfortable seven to eight passenger seating (there isn’t a bad seat in this house) while still having massive cargo capacity. Or they are for going to your local Home Depot or Lowe’s and God help your credit card. I was actually able to put 12-foot-long baseboard inside this massive shipping container.

Fire update: Sierra House Elementary to relocate all grades Dec. 17-21

After further evaluation on their school restoration and cleaning plan, Belfor has asked Sierra House Elementary to be vacant starting the week of December 17.

This access with no students or staff present will facilitate clean up and reconstruction so that the job can be completed thoroughly and with integrity by the time school resumes after the Christmas break.

In order to accommodate Belfor, Sierra House Principal Karin Holmes has let those affected they will be moving all of students and staff to Al Tahoe Elementary School (the Lake Tahoe Boy's and Girl's Club site).

Catch Handel's Messiah this season in the Lake Tahoe area

Former news anchor hired as City of South Lake Tahoe communications director

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A new communication manager is on board at the City of South Lake Tahoe.

Chris Fiore was hired on November 5 and is now on the job at City Hall. He’ll be the contact person for not only all media inquiries and City press releases, but also directing the city’s digital communications and social media.

There were 62 other people vying for the job, but the Emmy-nominated and Associated Press award-winning communications professional rose to the top of the strong pool of candidates.

Man who died after leaving SnowGlobe to be honored during Rose Parade

Hunter Weiss was 20-years-old when he attended the annual SnowGlobe Music Festival in South Lake Tahoe and was heading home to Reno on New Year's Day 2018. He and a friend pulled their vehicle over to sleep and left a propane heater on in the front of the truck to stay warm. Hunter died of carbon monoxide poisoning but his friend survived due to an open window on his side of the vehicle.

Weiss had been an organ donor and his corneas gave the gift of sight to two people, one whom had never seen before.

Kingsbury Grade crash sends one to hospital

STATELINE, Nev. - Kingsbury Grade was closed for about an hour Monday morning after two trucks collided Mile near Tramway Drive at approximately 8:00 a.m.

"The silver Ford F-150 went off the right side of the road and was then redirected, causing the truck to cross the centerline and strike the right front of the black Ford Flatbed truck," said Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Matt McLaughlin.

Sierra House Elementary fire caused by power cord overload

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A fire at Sierra House Elementary School on November 11, 2018 was caused by an electrical overload due to “daisy chain wiring” of two power cords in a classroom.

When firefighters from Lake Valley Fire Protection District (LVFPD) arrived at the school at 9:35 p.m. they found smoke once the front doors were opened and flames observed as they turned the corner near the "upper pod" wing.

US 50/South Shore Community Revitalization Project approved by TRPA

LAKE TAHOE, CA/NV - It's been 38 years in the making. On Thursday, November 15, 2018, the Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA) Board of Directors unanimously approved the final joint environmental document for the US 50/South Shore Community Revitalization Project, also known as the "Loop Road."

Last week, the board of the Tahoe Transportation District (TTD) unanimously approved the same document, the final Environmental Impact Statement (EIR/EIS/EIS).

South Lake Tahoe youth fundraising for dogs and cats

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - Four local young ladies are continuing to help the South Lake Tahoe community with their fundraising efforts to help different needs on the South Shore.

For the 2018 Christmas season Maiella and Milan Riva, Lily Demus and Simone Sitchon will be collecting items and money to help both Lake Tahoe Humane Society and El Dorado County Animal Shelter.

Last year the four girls collected clothing and toys for local foster youth and in 2016 they collected gloves, hats, socks, coats, and thermals for the Tahoe Warm Room.

Oversight committee to be appointed for South Lake Tahoe recreation funds

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - An oversight committee will be established for the 2016 voter-approved Measure P which raised tourist accommodation tax (TOT) by two percent to build a new recreation center in South Lake Tahoe.

During Tuesday's City Council meeting the elected team reviewed criteria for the future committee, and what sectors of the community will be sought. Those chosen will take part in the review of how funds are spent and report back to the public.

Good Samaritans and driver killed on Mt. Rose Highway

Three Reno residents are dead and one is in the hospital with serious injuries after a Saturday night crash on State Route 431, the Mt. Rose Highway.

At approximately 10:00 p.m. on November 10, the Nevada Highway Patrol responded to reports of a head-on crash on the Mt. Rose Highway (State Route 431) at Thomas Creek Road.

South Tahoe HIgh freshman volleyball finishes year undefeated

Several South Tahoe High School fall sports teams are in the post-season and celebrating a great year of competition, and among them is the freshman girls volleyball team.

The 13 young women spent the season playing each of the nine teams in the league twice in matches from Elko to Truckee.

Coached by Ms. Megan Goldberg, who was assisted by her husband Everett, the freshman volleyball team stepped up in 18 different matches to out-serve, out-play, and out-think their opponents.

South Lake Tahoe collision sends five to hospital

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A Saturday evening collision in South Lake Tahoe sent all five occupants of the two vehicles involved to the hospital.

At approximately 5:30 p.m. on October 20, 2018, a sedan was eastbound on Lake Tahoe Boulevard when its driver attempted to make a left turn into the Tahoe Keys Liquor parking lot in front of a westbound Chevy truck, according to South Lake Tahoe Police Sgt. Travis Cabral. The sedan, with four out-of-town visitors inside was broadsided by the truck occupied only by the driver, a South Lake Tahoe man.

Family Skate Night to help defray costs for local spinal cord injury victim

South Lake Tahoe resident Rocky Beaty has embarked on a long road to recovery after suffering a spinal cord injury while going gymnastics on May 28, 2018 in a local gym. Beaty fractured his C6 and C7 and was flown to Renown where he underwent a four-plus hour surgery, removing bulging discs, fusing his vertebrae, and placing two rods on the front and back of his spine.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - It looks like a prolonged quiet period of classic fall weather in South Lake Tahoe for the next 1-2 weeks with a couple of slight bumps in the road for parts of the Sierra.

A brush by of a cold front to the north could bring some gusty northeast winds and a recharge of cold air with widespread hard freezes looking likely for Monday and Tuesday mornings. South Lake Tahoe is forcast to be in the teens Sunday night, Monday morning.

It's Marathon Week in Lake Tahoe; Expect road closure October 14

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - The annual Lake Tahoe Marathon is October 12-14, 2018 with 1,800 athletes headed to town for the race. Over 20 events will take place around Lake Tahoe during the three days of fun and festivities this year, the 23rd year of the Marathon. Over 2,500 family members and friends are also expected to travel to the lake to watch and enjoy the town.

South Lake Tahoe man dies after being struck by vehicle

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - A 65-year-old man died Friday night after being struck by a vehicle near Denny's on Lake Tahoe Boulevard. Just before 7:30 p.m. on September 28, the South Lake Tahoe Police Department (SLTPD) received several calls about a pedestrian versus vehicle collision near the intersection of Lake Tahoe and Al Tahoe Boulevards.

Upon arrival they found an unresponsive man lying in the roadway in front of Denny's. South Lake Tahoe Fire Rescue personnel arrived and pronounced the local man deceased at the scene.

CHP School bus safety enforcement operation in South Lake Tahoe

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. - California Highway Patrol officers will be riding on local school buses on September 24 during a state-wide school bus pedestrian safety enforcement operation.

Motorists across the state continue to disobey the law requiring them to stop for a school bus with its flashing red lights activated and stop arm extended. During a one-day survey in 2016 of 137 school districts in California, over 26,000 motorists failed to stop for a school bus that was stopped to load or unload pupils.

A fall tradition in Lake Tahoe, Camp Richardson Historic Resort and Marina’s Oktoberfest returns for its 24th year Oct. 6-7, and it's back with more of everything. More food choices, beverages, and kids’ activities are lined up for the two-day festival that runs 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily. Entrance and parking for the event are free. All festival tickets for food and beverage booths, pumpkin patch and kids’ inflatable activities must be purchased with cash at the ticket booths.

Motorcyclist suffers serious injuries after Lake Tahoe collision

LAKE TAHOE, Nev. - A motorcyclist suffered serious injuries on Saturday, September 15 after colliding with a car on Highway 50 in front of Lake Village.

Traffic is now able to get by the scene on the shoulder of the road according to the Nevada Highway Patrol. The eastbound left lane is blocked as they clear the vehicle and motorcycle.

Expect delays.

According to witnesses the victim was transported by care flight.
