They used the last concert of the summer at Lakeview Commons on August 27 as the backdrop to a drone video and photograph.

Fall Festival and Chili Cook Off

The fourth annual Fall Festival and Chili Cook Off is building for Saturday, September 12, 2015, at the South Tahoe Recreation Complex on Rufus Allen Blvd.in South Lake Tahoe. The event will start at 10:00 a.m. with vendors and a vintage car show. Vendors will offer products and services for the home, including items like hand crafted furniture and lamps, small plants, local artists and authors, candles, and gift items. Liberty Energy, the Lake Tahoe Humane Society, Christmas Cheer, and the Cancer League will be on hand to explain the services available for our community.

Barton Auxiliary giver $13,500 to local students

The Barton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary has awarded $13,500 in scholarships to local students. The Barton Auxiliary recognized the eleven recipients from Lake Tahoe and Minden schools at their annual Scholarship Luncheon on Monday, June 8.

Estate of longtime volunteer goes to Barton Health

When Dan Kerr passed away last June, he left behind a legacy with the Barton Health Auxiliary. He coordinated the Barton Auxiliary Blood Drive held every other month, donated more than 26 gallons of blood since 1981, and served as Auxiliary President for six terms.

Now Dan Kerr has left a new mark. From his estate, he donated $219,097.92, divided equally, to the Barton Auxiliary and Barton Foundation.

Tahoe Douglas Fire blood drive in honor of injured firefighter

The Tahoe Douglas Fire Department is holding a blood drive in honor of Fresno Fire Department Captain Pete Dern who was burned over 70% of his body while responding to an house fire in March.

Bear cubs who wintered in South Lake Tahoe head back home

Hoopa and Salyer, two bear cubs who have been at Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care since the end of December, left their winter home Thursday and are now headed to the Hoopa Indian Reservation near Eureka, CA.

Salyer was just 24 pounds when he arrived in South Lake Tahoe from Salyer, CA, and Hoopa, who was found at the Reservation, was 25 pounds when she arrived.

Kids who collected 44,000 dimes visit burned firefighter

Maple Creek Elementary students learned the value of a dime Friday.

For collecting $4,402 — the equivalent of 44,020 dimes —for the Leon S. Peters Burn Center, they got a wave and a smile from Pete Dern, the Fresno fire captain who is recovering from severe burns he got while battling a blaze.

“It made his day,” said Dern’s wife, Kelly Dern, who accepted a check from the students for the burn center.

“His face lit up,” said Dern’s daughter, McKenzie Dern.

Counterfeit ring broken up in El Dorado County

El Dorado County Sheriff's deputies arrested five Bay Area residents on Thursay who are accused of being part of a counterfeit credit card ring.

On April 30, 2015 at about 1:00 p.m., deputies responded to Red Hawk Casino for a fraudulent use of a credit card. Red Hawk casino security reported two persons inside the casino attempted to use forged or stolen credit cards in an attempt to obtain cash. One was described as an adult Hispanic man and the other as an adult African American woman.

Lake Tahoe Home & Garden Show on Friday and Saturday

The fourth annual Lake Tahoe Home and Garden Show will be held on Friday, April 24th, and Saturday, April 25th, at the South Lake Tahoe Recreation Complex at 1080 Rufus Allen Blvd. The show will be open to the public on Friday from 4:00 pm to 7:30 pm, and Saturday, from 10:00 am to 4:30 pm.

Local's Day at Lake Tahoe Golf Course: Rounds of golf as well as fun foot golf

Lake Tahoe Golf Course is hosting their annual Local’s Day with a BioBlitz/Earth Day event on Wednesday, April 22nd from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. BioBlitz is a species counting competition organized by Audubon International to create awareness among golfers and the community about the environmental value of the habitats supported by golf courses.

Lake Tahoe Golf Course is a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary.

$10 million gift presented for Barton Wellness and Sports Performance Center

South Lake Tahoe resident Lisa Maloff presented a $10 million check to the Barton Foundation on Wednesday night for the building of the Robert Maloff Center of Excellence. The donation was made in memory of her husband Robert, who co-owned and operated the Lake Tahoe Inn and Timber Cove Lodge.

Barton Auxiliary donates $230,000 and recognizes volunteers

It was a festive and lively event at the Barton Auxiliary’s annual volunteer appreciation luncheon on Monday, April 13. More than 80 volunteers from the hospital, gift shop, and The Attic Thrift Store attended and were recognized for their service and gifts.

A Lake Tahoe breakfast tradition for more than 50 years

The scene: The 1950s were a huge decade of change for South Lake Tahoe, with the proliferation of casinos on the Nevada side and the creation of the one-chair Heavenly ski resort on the California side. But the main attraction, then as now, was the lake itself, its shore dotted with mom-and-pop motels, vacation cottages and souvenir shops. When the original Red Hut opened here in 1959, South Lake Tahoe was becoming popular but the tourism infrastructure was nascent.

The Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care Center has been a significant part of South Lake Tahoe's community for 37 years. The founders, Tom and Cheryl Milham, have cared for orphaned and injured animals out of their home, and plans are now in place to move the center to the corner of Al Tahoe Blvd and Pioneer Trail.

Community blood drive at Whittell High School March 19

Teen dating violence statistics prompt performance art contest and HEART campaign

Nearly 1.5 million high school students nationwide experience physical abuse from a dating partner in a single year.

One in three adolescents in the U.S. is a victim of physical, sexual, emotional or verbal abuse from a dating partner, a figure that far exceeds rates of other types of youth violence.

One in 10 high school students has been purposefully hit, slapped or physically hurt by a boyfriend or girlfriend.

One quarter of high school girls have been victims of physical or sexual abuse.
Approximately 70% of college students say they have been sexually coerced.

Community fitness challenge being held at SLT Recreation Center

Looking for some incentive to start getting more exercise? There is a new challenge program being offered called the Monthly Wellness Challenge where community members will compete for a monthly certificate and gift package.

The month of March is called 'Sweat Sessions' and will track the number of hours particpants spend in the Recreation Center's weight room. After paying the daily use fee, participants will track the amount of time spent in the weight room from March 1 to March 31. Sessions are tracked in 30 minute intervals.

Barton receives $10 million donation to build a sports and wellness center

Just a few months after she donated $5 million to Lake Tahoe Community College, Lisa Maloff has made another large donation in honor of her late husband, Robert Maloff.

Barton Memorial Hospital is the latest recipient of Maloff's generosity. She made a $10 million gift to fund the building of a health and sports performance center on the Barton Memorial Hospital campus. The new center will be called the Robert Maloff Center of Excellence.

Unique guitar created for the South Shore's new Hard Rock Hotel

It's not every day you see a 2,200 pound, 26-foot tall guitar being driven along Highway 50 from Sacramento into South Lake Tahoe. Nor does one normally see a huge crane lifting a metal guitar over 100 feet to be placed onto a base in front of a South Shore casino.

South Lake Tahoe's first baby of the year born at Barton Hospital

It didn't take long for the first baby of the year to be born on the South Shore. On January 1 at 3:06 p.m., Jayden Daniel Molina Torres was born to South Lake Tahoe natives Brianda Torres and Daniel Molina. Jayden weighed seven pounds, seven ounces and measured eighteen inches long.

Mom, dad, and Jayden’s six-year-old brother Noe Torres were all born at Barton Hospital. Brianda and Daniel both grew up in South Lake Tahoe, and met through Brianda’s family.

Dear Santa...

The Sugar Pine Foundation of Lake Tahoe has asked Santa for a $5,000 gift this year. That is the amount needed to plant and restore sugar pines in recent California wildfires.

The giant Pinus lambertiana (sugar pine trees) are shown uphill from these firefighters in the photo.

Sugar pines are the world's largest species of pine with the longest cones - and they are dying from white pine blister rust, a non-native, invasive fungus. Though they historically accounted for 25% of Lake Tahoe's forests, sugar pines now make up less than 5% of the forest composition.

Kudos: Liberty Utilities employees give back during the holidays

You may recall that a month ago employees from Liberty Utilities donated cash and boxes and cans of food for the South Lake Tahoe backpack food program, Page and Sage. This generous donation allows the group to continue to feed the kids in need in our community.

Family wins dinner with South Lake Tahoe firefighters

The South Lake Tahoe Fire Department hosted their first annual open house on October 11th in recognition of National Fire Prevention week. Visitors toured all three fire stations and learned about the importance of having and checking smoke detectors, hands only CPR, using a fire extinguisher and also completed a passport card for entry into a grand prize drawing for of a dinner for four prepared by the firefighters. The Gower family of Eric, Jamie, Rowen, and Abby were the winners of the Open House dinner.

Families in South Lake Tahoe receiving turkeys from Food Bank

The EL Dorado County Food Bank will be in South Lake Tahoe on Friday to give away turkeys to families selected by local agencies.

In partnership with Soroptimist International of South Lake Tahoe, Lake Tahoe Rotarians, SLT Fire Department, Tahoe Sierra Kiwanis Club and the SLT Police Department, the Food Bank will give away 150 turkeys.

Families were signed up to receive the turkeys by St. Theresa’s Bread & Broth and the Family Resource Center of South Lake Tahoe. They will get the gift on Friday, November 21 at the American Legion.

Cold Water Brewery & Grill opens in South Lake Tahoe

Finishing touches are being put on the new Cold Water Brewery & Grill as General Manager Debbie Brown prepares to open this weekend.
