Prescribed burning resumes around Lake Tahoe on Tuesday
Submitted by paula on Mon, 11/14/2016 - 4:47pmContinuing prescribed fire operations by the North Lake Tahoe and Tahoe Douglas fire protection districts and the U.S. Forest Service are scheduled to resume on Tuesday, November 15 in several areas around Lake Tahoe.
If conditions are favorable, buring is scheduled at Stillwater Cover near Crystal Bay, off Logan Creek Drive, near Cave Rock, Zephyr Heights and Round Hill, and on urban lots near Heavenly Mountain Resort, off North Upper Truckee Road and near Big Meadow off Highway 89 South. Operations will continue as conditions allow.
South Lake Tahoe resident asks City to ban street parking on Regina Road
Submitted by paula on Sun, 11/13/2016 - 12:13amNoel Farmer, a South Lake Tahoe resident, has been a vocal opponent to Vacation Home Rentals (VHRs) in his Heavenly Valley neighborhood. Farmer is present at City Council and Planning Commission meetings, as well as Zoning Administrator meetings when the topic is VHRs.
During this Tuesday's meeting at the airport, the City Council members will discuss Farmer's petition to ban street parking on the dead-end street where he lives, Regina Road, in the 3600 and 3700 blocks.

Prescribed burns start again Sunday around the South Shore
Submitted by paula on Sat, 11/05/2016 - 11:45pmThe Tahoe Douglas Fire Protection District and U.S. Forest Service have scheduled prescribed fire operations around the South Shore from Spooner Summit to Meyers, weather and conditions permitting.
Starting Sunday, November 6, the agencies will start burning hand piles off Logan Creek Drive and on Kingsbury Grade on the East Shore, and on urban lots near Heavenly Mountain Resort and off North Upper Truckee Road on the South Shore.

Amgen Women's Race returns to Lake Tahoe for two stages in 2017
Submitted by paula on Wed, 11/02/2016 - 6:17amAmgen Tour of California announced today that professional cycling will return to Lake Tahoe, May 11-12, 2017. The Amgen Breakaway from Heart Disease Women's Race will include the overall start and Stage 2 on consecutive days. The women’s competition will conclude with a third stage in Elk Grove, May 13 and the final in Sacramento, May 14.
The men's race is skipping Lake Tahoe this year and is set to begin in Sacramento on May 14.
Prescribed burns resume around South Lake Tahoe

Urban lots near Heavenly Mountain Resort and off of South Upper Truckee Road near Highway 89 in Christmas Valley are on the list for fire operations.

Tahoe Mountain Lab to add working spaces on the slopes at Heavenly

That wish will be a reality this winter as Tahoe Mountain Lab and Vail Resorts have developed a first of its kind coworking space at Heavenly Mountain's Lakeview Lodge.
Starting in December, the on-mountain solution will open for people that need to hammer out a few hours of work but would still like to enjoy a day on the slopes.
Prescribed burning to resume in Lake Tahoe Basin; Other fires still restricted
Submitted by admin on Mon, 10/24/2016 - 4:30pmIt's that time of year again when the U.S. Forest Service resumes their prescribed burns in the Lake Tahoe basin to reduce fuels in sensitive areas.
Fire restrictions have not been lifted in the basin yet, but it is not uncommon for the Forest Service to conduct operations while those restrictions are still in effect according to Lisa Heron of the USFS Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit.
Douglas County transportation plan through 2040 presented at public meeting
Submitted by paula on Mon, 10/10/2016 - 4:10pmThe 2007 Douglas County Transportation Plan did not address any needs in the lake portion of the county, and the newly completed 2016 plan doesn't as well though it discusses a potential gondola from the base of Kingsbury Grade to Heavenly Mountain Resort.
The results of 2016's Douglas County Transportation Master Plan update will be presented during a public meeting on October 20 at 6:00 p.m. in the C.V.I.C. Hall.
Parsons Corporation, the organization which prepared the update, will give the presentation.
Winning cocktail at annual Barton event named after SLT woman fighting cancer

Gary Gamprie and James Olson of LewMarNel’s Steaks & Spirits received the honor for their mauve fruit smoothie. Their drink will be featured as the signature cocktail at the Barton Foundation’s 25th annual Gala at the Festival of Trees & Lights in December.

Led by Lift Maintenance Manager, Kevin Higgins, Ryan Albertson, Jen Menzel, Jeff Reid, Kelli Renzi and Vinny Valdez arrived at Grace Hall at 3:00 p.m. and spent the next three and a half hours helping the Bread & Broth volunteers with the Monday evening dinner.
Tahoe Rim Trail worker injured after serious fall
Submitted by paula on Thu, 08/25/2016 - 4:04pmA worker on the Tahoe Rim Trail sustained serious injuries Thursday when he fell down a steep slope and landed on rocks near Heavenly Mountain Resort.
"The unidentified man was taken to the hospital with multiple traumatic injuries," Tahoe Douglas Fire Marshall Eric Guevin told South Tahoe Now. "He was with a snagged tree and thrown 40 feet down a 40 percent slope."
First VHR in South Lake Tahoe denied a permit under new regulations
Submitted by admin on Fri, 08/12/2016 - 4:07pmA home being built on Overlook Court near Heavenly Mountain Resort is the first one to be denied a Vacation Home Rental permit under the Planning Commission's interpretation of the new VHR guidelines created by the City of South Lake Tahoe.
During their monthly meeting at the airport on Thursday, the commission voted 2-2 to uphold the denial of the permit made by the zoning administrator, John Hitchcock. The fifth member of the commission, Shannon Eckmeyer, was not at the meeting due to another engagement.
Montreal Fire sparks another spot fire; Small fire in Desolation Wilderness
Submitted by paula on Wed, 07/20/2016 - 7:30pmAnother spot fire from Tuesday's Montreal Fire in South Lake Tahoe flared up overnight, burning about .16 acre before being controlled by firefighters. This spot was under the Heavenly Gondola tower 7.
This was the third spot fire started from the original fire which started behind the electrical substation on Montreal Road. All are out at this time.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation though the area where the first fire ignited is known to be used as a transient encampment.
Quick response to two fires burning near Heavenly Gondola

Wrap up of fire activity is expected at 9:00 p.m. but personnel will remain on the scene to watch overnight.

USFS using chemicals at 70 sites to remove invasive plants
Submitted by paula on Sat, 07/09/2016 - 10:52pmEarlier this week, the U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit (LTBMU) resumed a project to eradicate, control, and contain known infestations of invasive plants in the Lake Tahoe Basin using chemical treatment. The work will continue at approximately 70 infestation sites through September, 2016.
Douglas County students participate in gang resistance training program

The annual G.R.E.A.T. (Gang Resistance Education and Training) program has lessons from Deputies Teresa Duffy and Chris Wiggins which wrapped up with a four-day adventure event at Lake Tahoe.
Blue Go out, TTD in, as operations change July 1

42 buses make up the local system which have more than 800,000 trips annually on their routes which cover both sides of the state line including commuter bus service from the lake to Carson City and the Carson Valley.

Heavenly opens mountain coaster ride

For a daily fee, people will take the Gondola up the hill to the upper mountain, and have unlimited access to the mountain. For those eight-year-old and older, and over 45 pounds, the $89 Ultimate Adventure Pass Includes a Gondola Ride, Ridge Rider Mountain Coaster, Summer Tubing, Hot Shot Zip Line, Boulder Cove Ropes Course and Granite Peak Climbing Wall. There is also a $49 pass for kids under eight with age appropriate activities.

For two weeks every year, Lake Tahoe area commuters, students and recreational riders get on their bikes instead of in the cars to get to where they need to go. This year's event started on June 1 and goes until June 14 so there are just a few days to make your bike rides count.
In addition to all the other reasons to participate (including that it is fun & free), the data collected goes to help show the need for bicycle paths and other infrastructure when we apply for grants and other funding.

Skujins breaks away at finish line to win Stage 5 of Amgen in South Lake Tahoe

The day began as riders left Lodi at 50 feet above sea level, and crossed the finish line 130 miles later in South Lake Tahoe at 6,650 feet.

Good news for the festival is the Friday night snow will make room for a sunny and warmer Saturday before the next system moves in.
A series of storms are headed to the Sierra, the first set to arrive Thursday night/Friday morning.
It is also closing weekend at Heavenly Mountain Resort, and they should have a fresh layer of powder for the skiers headed to the slopes. Both Kirkwood and Sierra-at-Tahoe are both closed for the season.

Heavenly Ski Patrollers host Skate Night for kids with special needs

The Heavenly Mountain Resort ski patrol crew will be hosting a free skate night for children with special needs on Friday, April 15 from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the South Lake Tahoe Ice Arena on Rufus Allen Blvd.
They will be offering the positive experience in a social environment they may not have had before by getting the kids on the ice by pushing them in adaptive hockey sleds. After "skating" they will be treated to a pizza party at the rink.

Due to the rolling lane closures at approximately the same time schools are let out, students will get a minimum day on Thursday, May 19, 2016.

City adds another location for electric car owners to charge up

The City partnered with ChargePoint, the largest electric vehicle charging station company, and added a system on the first floor of the garage near the elevator. Users will need to have an account with ChargePoint.
"Brave the Shave" St. Baldrick's event to raise money for childhood cancer research

The event has already raised over $45,000, even though the shaving doesn't begin until 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 5. This is the fifth consecutive year for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation event, Brave the Shave for Kids with Cancer, in South Lake Tahoe. They have moved it this year to the Heavenly Mountain Resort California Lodge located at 3860 Saddle Road.
The St. Baldrick's Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity that funds more in childhood cancer research grants than any organization except the U.S. government.

Four arrested after high speed chase through Douglas County and South Lake Tahoe crime

Two different high speed chases through the Carson Valley and up Kingsbury Grade resulted in the arrest of two men and two women on Saturday, February 27, 2017.
At 3:10 p.m., a trooper from the Nevada Highway Patrol spotted a silver Mercedes-Benz with California plates going down U.S. 50 (Spooner Summit) at 85 mph. The driver failed to pull over for the trooper, instead turning South on Highway 395 towards Minden, Nev., at speeds in excess of 100 mph.
Woman dies at Heavenly Mountain Resort after hitting tree
Submitted by paula on Wed, 02/17/2016 - 2:09pmA 77-year-old Wisconsin woman has died from injuries received after hitting a tree while skiing at Heavenly Mountain Resort on February 16, 2016.
Kathryn Strangman of Madison, Wisconsin had been skiing on the Nevada side of the resort when she hit a tree. Ski Patrol attempted lifesaving treatment according to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office.
Sgt. Pat Brooks of the department said an autopsy is scheduled and the investigation is continuing.
South Lake Tahoe fifth graders learn how to snowshoe at Heavenly

St. Baldrick's is a volunteer-powered charity that shows solidarity with young cancer patients through annual head-shaving events around the world that raise awareness and money for cancer research.
NV Energy to replace 60-year-old transmission line to Tramway Drive

The U.S. Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is seeking public input on 634 Line Rebuild project. The draft Environmental Assessment (EA) analyzes the proposed replacement of the transmission line that serves the Kingsbury substation, which provides electricity to Heavenly Mountain Resort and the surrounding Kingsbury Grade area.

Amgen Tour announces Lake Tahoe men's and women's race schedule

Amgen officials said more than 350 of the world’s top cyclists will challenge themselves in Lake Tahoe by putting their strength and muscle power to the test as they climb, descend and break away along steep and winding stretches of the Sierra on Thursday, May 19.
South Tahoe High Alpine Ski Team leading Tahoe Basin Ski League

After Monday's slalom race at Heavenly Mountain Resort, South Tahoe High leads the Tahoe Basin Ski League with four girls and four boys in the top ten in their respective divisions.
Whittell High School's Payton Norton leads all boys in the league with his teammate Gunnar Barnwell currently in 10th place.

Thanks to a grant written by STEEC member, Devin Middlebrook (TRPA Environmental Education Specialist), EPIC Promise (through Vail Resorts – Heavenly) covered the cost of transportation, lift tickets for the tram ride, use of snowshoes, and presenters. The day was well planned and all went smoothly.
We learned much about our environment including local animals, avalanche safety and snowmaking. And luckily we enjoyed a “blue bird” day at the top of the tram!
Ski With a Ranger program starts at Heavenly this week

Tours will be held every Monday and Friday beginning at 1:00 p.m., last approximately one-hour and continue through April 1, 2016, weather permitting.

Six months ago they launched "Explore Your Trip," a itinerary planning tool on their website that helps travelers plan their trip based on what they like to do, what their budget, what they like to each and many other categories.

Missing Lake Tahoe skier rescued in same area as previous day SAR training
Submitted by paula on Mon, 01/11/2016 - 4:30pmDouglas County Search and Resuce (DCSAR) spent Saturday doing technical training on the eastern slopes of the Carson Range. Heavenly Mountain Resort allowed the members to ride the Gondola and Tamarack chair before the resort opened to the public so that the training could focus on safely traveling down to the valley, as would be required on a real rescue.
They didn't have to wait long to use their finely tuned skills since they were called out to the resort on Sunday after a skier became lost in the same general area. DCSAR was able to safely locate and rescue the unidentified person.
Eighteen years since Sonny Bono died while skiing in South Lake Tahoe
Submitted by paula on Wed, 01/06/2016 - 12:35amIt has been 18 years since Sonny Bono, a California congressman and entertainer who had performed at Lake Tahoe, died in a skiing accident at Heavenly Mountain Resort.
Bono was 62 when he set out skiing on that Monday morning, January 5, 1998. He was first reported missing at 4:30 p.m. In hopes that he left the mountain without telling anyone, Bono was paged in each of the Stateline casinos.
Man's fall at Heavenly turns into international bear attack story

Ski accidents do happens often, but the international attention the victim's accident got from a news source in Ireland gained attention from South Lake Tahoe locals following the photo and story on social media that the injury was from a bear attack.
Climate change experts and meteorologists attending Operation Sierra Storm

South Lake Tahoe is host to Operation Sierra Storm each year, a leading national weather conference that brings together those that report the weather with South Lake Tahoe activities and top climate scientists.
The three-day conference runs from January 6-9, 2016 and the public has the opportunity to attend the Friday sessions that feature California State Sen. Pro Tem Kevin de León and Alexander (Sasha) Gershunov, Research Meteorologist for Climate, Atmospheric Science and Physical Oceanography at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
Kudos: Heavenly Mountain Resort adopts a day at Bread & Broth
Submitted by paula on Wed, 12/23/2015 - 9:47pmThanks to the generous Vail EpicPromise Grant program funds awarded to Bread & Broth, 12 Monday evening meals are served annually through B&B’s “Adopt A Day of Nourishment” program. On a monthly basis, Heavenly Mountain Resort and Kirkwood Mountain Resort alternate hosting a dinner and sending a sponsor volunteer crew to work with the B&B volunteers to provide a hot, nutritious meal and “giveaway” bags to South Tahoe Community members dealing with food insecurity.
